Voters set to decide Wisconsin Supreme Court race and Georgia runoff for Marjorie Taylor Greene’s seat

Voters in Wisconsin and northwest Georgia head to the polls Tuesday to decide a pair of races that will provide further clues about how the political environment is shaping up heading into this fall’s midterm elections. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. In battleground Wisconsin, liberals are aiming to further expand their majority on the state Supreme Court and extend their recent winning streak. And in the runoff election in Georgia’s conservative 14th Congressional District, Republicans are favored to hold on to former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s seat, while Democrats are hoping to at least make it competitive. Tuesday’s contest between the Democratic-backed Chris Taylor and the Republican-backed Maria Lazar to fill a seat held by retiring conservative Justice Rebecca Bradley has flown under the radar nationally compared to last year’s Wisconsin Supreme Court race, when the majority was at stake. That election ended up as the most expensive state judicial race in history after tech billionaire Elon Musk, who was an adviser to President Donald …

Establishment-backed GOP candidate wins Arkansas Secretary of State primary runoff

Arkansas Sen. Kim Hammer (R), who received support from a handful of top Republican officials in the state, is projected to win the GOP primary runoff for Arkansas secretary of state, according to Decision Desk HQ.  Hammer defeated Republican Bryan Norris — a retired Army first sergeant and businessman who enjoyed the backing of backing of MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell… Source link

Senate Republicans urge Trump to back Cornyn in Texas runoff

Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-Texas) better-than-expected performance in Tuesday’s primary could turn the race on its head as President Trump revealed that he will endorse “soon” in the looming runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R). Senate GOP leaders, itching avoid an expensive battle with Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, are pushing Trump to back… Source link

Texas Reps. Menefee, Green advance to runoff as first midterm primaries show incumbents on shaky ground

Christian Menefee and Al Green. Al Drago | Sergio Flores | Reuters The first round of primary elections is showing how this year’s midterms will be taking place on shifting political ground for incumbents. That was particularly true in Texas — the first state to redraw its congressional districts last year — where incumbent members of Congress have been pushed to runoffs and another has been scuttled from the House altogether. Former Rep. Colin Allred, who abandoned his initial U.S. Senate run to pursue Texas’ 33rd Congressional District, is headed to a runoff with Rep. Julie Johnson, who holds the U.S. House seat that used to be his. Democratic Rep. Al Green, an outspoken liberal who has twice been ejected from President Donald Trump’s State of the Union addresses for protesting, and newly elected Rep. Christian Menefee will compete in the May 26 runoff for a Houston-area district. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Republican and former Navy SEAL with an independent streak, faced attacks from the party’s hard right that he was not in lockstep with …

Talarico wins Texas Senate Democratic nomination while Cornyn and Paxton head to Republican runoff

Talarico wins Texas Senate Democratic nomination while Cornyn and Paxton head to Republican runoff

State Rep. James Talarico topped Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in an expensive and fiercely contested Texas Senate Democratic primary that once again has the party dreaming of a big upset in November. Who Talarico will face depends on a May runoff between longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn and MAGA favorite Ken Paxton — a race expected to get increasingly nasty over coming months and could hinge on whether or not President Donald Trump offers an endorsement. Texas, along with North Carolina and Arkansas, on Tuesday kicked off midterm elections with control of Congress at stake and against the backdrop of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. No Democrat has won a statewide race in the reliably Republican state in over 30 years, but in a statement after his victory, Talarico proclaimed “We’re about to take back Texas.” Crockett’s campaign said she planned to sue over voting issues in Dallas and she spoke only briefly on Tuesday night to warn that “people have been disenfranchised.” Republicans head to round 2 Cornyn, meanwhile, is seeking a fifth term but …

James Talarico wins Texas Democratic Senate primary as John Cornyn and Ken Paxton go to a GOP runoff

James Talarico wins Texas Democratic Senate primary as John Cornyn and Ken Paxton go to a GOP runoff

State Rep. James Talarico has won the Democratic Senate nomination in Texas over Rep. Jasmine Crockett, NBC News projects, as the party seeks to put the traditionally Republican state in play this fall. With 83% of the expected vote in, Talarico had won 53% to Crockett’s 46%. On the Republican side, the heated primary is set to continue for several more weeks, with NBC News projecting that Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton will advance to a runoff. “We’re about to take back Texas,” Talarico said in a short statement after the race was called. Crockett conceded to Talarico, saying in a statement Wednesday that she called him to congratulate him on becoming the party’s nominee. She urged the party to unite behind Talarico heading into the general election. “With the primary behind us, Democrats must rally around our nominees and win,” Crockett said. “I’m committed to doing my part and will continue working to elect democrats up and down the ballot.” Largely aligned on policy, Talarico and Crockett diverged on style …

Inside D4RUNOFF’s AI risk maps for urban runoff management

Inside D4RUNOFF’s AI risk maps for urban runoff management

The D4RUNOFF project is turning complex urban runoff data into clear, climate-informed risk maps that help cities identify pollution hotspots and plan practical nature-based solutions (NBS) with confidence. Urban runoff is an invisible everyday problem and one of the most overlooked environmental risks cities face today. When it rains, water flows over roads, rooftops, and paved surfaces, collecting pollutants such as heavy metals from building materials, tire residues, hydrocarbons, and other contaminants. This polluted runoff is then carried into streams, wetlands, and coastal waters, often without treatment. One of the goals of D4RUNOFF is to address this issue with a practical, city-friendly solution: transforming complex environmental data into clear, actionable risk maps. These maps show where pollution is most likely to occur both today and under future rainfall scenarios, so local authorities can prioritise action where it matters most. At the core of this innovation is Mitiga Solutions, a Barcelona-based climate risk intelligence SME and member of the D4RUNOFF consortium. Mitiga Solutions designed the project’s risk-mapping methodology to translate raw environmental data into intuitive decision-making …

Steady turnout in Portugal presidential runoff marred by storms, floods – POLITICO

Steady turnout in Portugal presidential runoff marred by storms, floods – POLITICO

At least 14 people have died during, or in the immediate aftermath of, extratropical cyclones Kristin, Leonardo and Marta, which have caused severe flooding from the southern town of Alcoutim to the bustling northern city of Porto, where the Douro River’s waters overflowed into the Ribeira neighborhood. Fierce winds have knocked out the power supply to more than 100,000 homes across the country, and the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere has placed all coastal municipalities under yellow alert. Weather-related interruptions of the country’s public transport networks could complicate voters’ attempts to reach polling stations. Traffic is suspended on Coimbra’s urban railway network and the railway linking Lisbon with seaside suburbs like Estoril and Cascais is operating on a reduced schedule. To postpone or not to postpone? Ventura this week called for the runoff to be postponed, insisting the country was “not capable of holding elections in this environment.” Although  19 especially hard-hit municipalities — home to 31,862 voters — have been given permission to delay the vote by one week, polling stations are open …
