San Francisco 49ers player’s final hours revealed before ‘sudden and tragic’ death at 36

Football fans are mourning one of their own, gone too soon. On Saturday, June 143 in the evening, the San Francisco 49ers announced that their former player Aldon Smith had died. He was 36. And though a cause of death has yet to be publicized, friends of the late All-Pro defensive lineman are giving insight into his tumultuous life after his also difficult exit from the NFL. © Getty ImagesAldon in 2013 Amir Shirazi, speaking with the San Francisco Chronicle, revealed that upon exiting his home on Saturday, he found Aldon slumped over in the front passenger seat of his white Chevy pickup, seemingly asleep with his mouth open. Sensing something was wrong, he called 911 as well as former 49ers running back Anthony Dixon to the scene, though Aldon was declared dead in Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose not long after. Amir further shared with the outlet that Aldon, originally from Greenwood, Mississippi, had spent his last day prior to his death helping deliver pizza to a homeless charity. © Getty ImagesThe late …

Two of those victims were discovered decades ago, and investigators are examining other cases possibly linked to the defendant, Dwight Rhone, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. Rhone, 74, was arraigned on three additional murder charges and pleaded not guilty. His attorney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan credited a deputy prosecutor for the new charges, saying her “persistence and attention to detail helped uncover critical connections between this defendant and multiple victims, including victims whose cases had gone cold.” The charges are connected to three men — Michael Brown, Ronald Johnken and Herierto Ruiz — according to the release. Rhone was previously charged with murder in the death of Bernardo Moreno, 54, who was found near a highway interchange on Oct. 18, …

San Francisco immigration court shuts down ahead of schedule : NPR

Elin, who immigrated seeking asylum from Nicaragua, is currently awaiting his final asylum hearing in San Francisco, and now will likely need to navigate the challenge of transport to the court in Concord, Calif., which is hours away from his home in San Francisco. SAN FRANCISCO — The speedy shuttering of the main immigration courthouse in San Francisco affects over 100,000 pending immigration cases, slowing down their consideration and leaving more immigrants in limbo and at risk of deportation. But it also deals a symbolic blow to a region that has long stood at the vanguard of immigration advocacy. For decades, the San Francisco immigration court was where immigrants living between California’s Central Valley and central Oregon could make the case for why they shouldn’t be deported. The broad jurisdiction made it one of the busiest immigration courts in the country, hearing thousands of cases a year. It was also one …

The Untold Story of the Google Buses That Took Over San Francisco

The Untold Story of the Google Buses That Took Over San Francisco

Activists in San Francisco’s Mission District weren’t giving up easily. David Campos had taken the baton from Chris Daly as the city Supervisor leading the anti-gentrification advocates, who were anchored in a handful of nonprofit community groups. During the springtime festivities for Cinco de Mayo in 2015, Campos called for a moratorium on all new housing construction in the Mission, saying it was the only way to give the district “a fighting chance.” The idea that new apartment buildings would push rents higher was—and is—a source of endless exasperation for housing advocates. Scott Wiener, who’d taken a more centrist path than Campos, was now on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors and led the charge against the Mission moratorium, which was voted down twice. It was too drastic a step even for the progressive-leaning Board. But development in the district slowed dramatically in the face of all the political resistance: a proposed 10-story apartment building dubbed “the Monster in the Mission” by activists had become a symbol of the fight and was ultimately abandoned. (As of …

Gray whales are showing up in San Francisco Bay, a detour on their long migrations from Mexico to Alaska. They seem to be searching for food, as changing ocean conditions reduce availability of their normal prey in the Arctic. Darrin Allen/The Marine Mammal Center, NOAA hide caption toggle caption Darrin Allen/The Marine Mammal Center, NOAA Gray whales used to be a rare sight in San Francisco Bay. Now, their spouts are appearing off Alcatraz Island in one of the busiest waterways in the country. The whales are making a pit stop on their long migrations from Mexico to Alaska, detouring under the Golden Gate Bridge for a snack as climate change is shrinking their normal food supply in Arctic waters. But as gray whales try to adapt to one human-caused impact by feeding in San Francisco Bay, it’s putting them squarely in the path of another hazard: ships. Of 16 gray whales seen in San Francisco Bay this year, seven have died. Researchers have found evidence that several were killed by ship strikes. With some …

A San Diego man is recovering after surviving a grizzly bear attack while hiking in Montana’s Glacier National Park, an encounter he says he was fortunate to escape with his life. Daniel Crago, an avid outdoorsman, was hiking along the Grinnell Glacier Trail on May 28 during what was supposed to be the final day of a weeklong vacation filled with outdoor adventures. “My love for nature kind of started when I was young,” Crago said. After more than 20 miles of hiking throughout the week, Crago was nearing the end of his trip with his friend when he encountered a bear cub near the trail. “Something catches my attention off to the left. I look over and it was a smaller cub,” he recalled. Moments later, he spotted a larger grizzly bear nearby. “No more than 15 feet above on the hill and on the same snow patch was a larger grizzly bear,” Crago said. Recognizing the danger, he …

The Knicks Fans Are Coming! New York’s Basketball Fanatics Descend on San Antonio for Game 1 of the NBA Finals

Hotel Emma, a repurposed 19th-century brewhouse in the Pearl district of midtown San Antonio, is used to accommodating high rollers. Past guests include Paul McCartney, Adam Sandler, and Cher, who has called it “one of the most unique, beautiful hotels ever.” But it has never played host to what is perhaps the wealthiest and most famous fan base in all of professional sports, staring down a chance to end a championship drought of over 50 years. When New York Knicks fans arrive in Texas on Wednesday for Game 1 of the NBA finals against the San Antonio Spurs, a rematch of their team’s last losing finals appearance in 1999, they will enter what Hotel Emma CEO Jon Sakshaug described as a city “on fire.” “This is as exciting as this city has been in a long, long time,” Sakshaug told Vanity Fair. “And that comes from the opponent being the Knicks, which is a world-class brand.” The Knicks’ courtside fan contingent is a complex celebrity ecosystem, with Ben Stiller and Spike Lee among the most …

What’s Worth More Than Cash in San Francisco Real Estate? Anthropic Stock

Few things are more valuable in the Bay Area than real estate. In San Francisco, the median house price is now over $2 million. Last month, at least seven houses in the city sold for $1 million over the asking price, and buyers regularly offer to pay in cash or waive contingencies to stay competitive. Yet there is one thing that remains even more valuable than a house, and possibly more valuable than money itself: stock in Anthropic or OpenAI. Last week, 160 Noe Street, an Edwardian home in San Francisco’s desirable Duboce Triangle neighborhood, was listed for sale at $2.9 million—or the equivalent amount in Anthropic or OpenAI shares, as based on those companies’ current valuations. Rachel Swann, the listing agent, says she was inspired to set these unusual terms after meeting several Anthropic employees at an open house for a different property. “These people have a lot of paper wealth, but they don’t always have the liquidity to do things they want,” Swann says. Some of these employees were expecting to come into …
