A new long-distance walking trail in Wales takes in gorges, ruined abbeys and sweeping sands | Wales holidays

Up here, the river was a mere gurgle; a babbling babe finding its way into the world. A few sheep roamed, a kite wheeled and a spring-clean wind ruffled the tussocks on the barren hills and rippled the pools. It was a stark yet striking beginning. As we followed a brand new fingerpost, skirted Llyn Teifi – the river’s official source – and picked up the fledgling flow, there was a sense great things lay ahead, for us both. The Teifi rises in Ceredigion’s Cambrian Mountains – the untramped “green desert of Wales” – and pours into Cardigan Bay 75 miles (120km) south-west. It’s one of the longest rivers wholly within Wales and, historically, one of its most significant: the beating heart of the country’s fishing and wool-weaving industries, 12th-century abbeys at either end, Wales’s oldest university en route. However, those abbeys lie in ruin now, salmon and sewin (brown trout) stocks have plummeted, and the mills are shuttered – though the factory in the village of Dre-fach Felindre now operates as the National Wool …

Chinese embassy warns nationals after Marina Bay Sands casino death in Singapore

Content warning: This article contains mentions of suicide. Singapore’s Chinese embassy has issued a sharp warning to its citizens after a Chinese national died by suicide following gambling at the Marina Bay Sands casino. In a notice released Saturday (February 14), the embassy said it is helping the family of the deceased and used the case to caution both residents and tourists from China to stay away from gambling while in Singapore. The advisory comes just ahead of the Spring Festival travel rush, when visitor numbers are expected to climb. Officials said the consular section has handled several gambling-related deaths in recent years. With more holidaymakers heading overseas, the embassy urged Chinese nationals to strengthen their legal awareness and think carefully about the consequences of taking part in gambling activities abroad. In recent years, the Embassy has handled several cases of death caused by gambling and has previously issued related reminders. ‘Golden sands meld into the clear turquoise sea’: readers’ favourite beaches in Europe | Travel

A half-moon of golden sand in Sicily Forty miles east of Palermo, the magnificent Sicilian resort town of Cefalù juts out beneath dramatic cliffs. The town has a perfect half-moon beach of golden sands melding into the gorgeous clear turquoise sea. Medieval lanes of stones in a diamond pattern lead up to a lively square offering great Italian food. It’s fronted by a beautiful Norman cathedral with twin towers and Byzantine mosaics inside.David Innes-Wilkin A calm lagoon in Portugal ‘Accessible but blissfully remote’ … Fuseta, in Ria Formosa natural park, Portugal. Photograph: Tamas Gabor/Alamy From Faro, head east away from the more touristy haunts and, between Olhão and Tavira, you’ll find the charming fishing village of Fuseta. This whole stretch of coast is a natural park protected by sand spits and islands, which make for miles of calm lagoon waters. Take a water taxi to a range of completely deserted spots and get picked up at a prearranged time, or you can call when you’re ready to return to civilisation. Highly accessible but blissfully remote. …
