‘Everyone was scared of Queen Elizabeth for heartbreaking reason’ | Royal | News

A royal insider has revealed the surprising, and touching, reason why so many people felt intimidated by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Despite her global stature, the late monarch did not inspire fear through anger or authority, but through something far more personal. “Yes, everyone was scared of her, but not because she might be angry – she wasn’t an ogre,” royal expert Robert Hardman explained. “They were just terrified of letting her down.” Speaking in The Sunday Telegraph, Mr Hardman’s remarks shed light on the late Queen’s leadership style, suggesting those around her were driven by a quiet desire to meet her expectations rather than avoid her temper. It also highlights the warmth she showed behind palace walls – including towards Meghan Markle in her early days as a royal. In a gesture described as a “rare honour” by Mr Hardman, the Queen invited Meghan to join her on a solo trip aboard the royal train – a privilege seldom extended to new members of the family. “The Queen [also] gifted her a pair …

That is how Sarah Ferguson is allegedly feeling as she was spotted at a luxury chalet in the Austrian Alps, where she has reportedly been lying low amid growing calls for her to give evidence about what she knew about the paedophile financier’s dealings. She has reportedly not been contacted by the royal family since she was stripped of her title over her and her husband’s links to Jeffrey Epstein, and one friend of the former duchess told The Mirror: “Sarah is living in fear right now. She’s not immune to everything that is happening. She realises how serious everything is, and she is not coping with it.” With millions of Epstein files still awaiting release, it is up to her daughters to pick up the pieces of the shattered lives left in their wake. Whatever their father, or even …

There’s one Lord of the Rings tale left to tell, but Hollywood is too scared

There’s one Lord of the Rings tale left to tell, but Hollywood is too scared

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien are some of the most beloved books of the past century, and basically responsible for launching the high fantasy genre as we still know it. Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy is celebrated to this day, but every attempt to bring Tolkien’s world to the screen since then has stumbled. The Hobbit movie trilogy, while profitable, stretched out a short, charming book far too thin, and 2024’s animated feature The War of the Rohirrim made so few waves this may be the first you’re hearing about it. Meanwhile, Prime Video’s Rings of Power TV show has been all of fine, and this franchise deserves better than fine. (Prime Video would have been better off keeping their other, superior high fantasy show.) As it happens, there is a way out of this quagmire, but it feels like a long shot. The problem with modern Lord of the Rings movies Can I interest you in reheated lembas bread? There are currently two Lord …

Tesla successfully scared Giga Berlin workers away from union

Tesla successfully scared Giga Berlin workers away from union

IG Metall’s vote share at Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin decreased from 39.4% to just 31.1% in the works council election that concluded today, a devastating 8-percentage-point drop that came after weeks of threats, police involvement, and a direct warning from Elon Musk that expansion would stop if the union gained influence. The management-aligned “Giga United” list won 40.4% of the vote, securing a commanding lead over the union and ensuring that Germany’s only non-union auto plant stays that way. The results Roughly 10,700 workers at Tesla’s Grünheide plant voted over three days from March 2–4, with 87% turnout — down 6 percentage points from the 2024 election. The council was reduced from 39 seats to 37, reflecting the factory’s shrinking workforce. IG Metall needed 19 of those 37 seats to take majority control. They didn’t come close. The union’s 31.1% vote share represents a sharp retreat from the 39.4% it earned in 2024, when it secured 16 of 39 seats and became the council’s largest faction. As A Dad Raising A Daughter Today, There Are 4 Things I Can’t Stop Thinking About

As A Dad Raising A Daughter Today, There Are 4 Things I Can’t Stop Thinking About

My daughter came into my life like a moonrock, like a falling star, like something fell out of the sky and landed on my heart. I can honestly say I don’t know who or what I’d have become if she had never been born. But chances are, if she hadn’t come to her mama and me, I would have gone stark-raving mad out in my garage, toiling my life away trying to create the magic essence she sprinkles all over my daily path just by being alive.  I’m not kidding. I was a year or two away from spending my days smooshing nails/clay/paint/raccoon eyeballs/and deer blood together in some desperate attempt to concoct the perfect best friend for me before I died. So thank the Baby Buddha she arrived when she did. However, as much as I love my daughter, and she loves me, the honeymoon period that research showed all dads go through in the beginning has subsided a bit. I’m now left staring down the cold, steely barrel of reality when it comes …

AI Is Here to Replace Nuclear Treaties. Scared Yet?

AI Is Here to Replace Nuclear Treaties. Scared Yet?

For half a century, the world’s nuclear powers relied on an intricate and complex series of treaties that slowly and steadily reduced the number of nuclear weapons on the planet. Those treaties are gone now, and it doesn’t appear that they’ll be coming back anytime soon. As a stopgap measure, researchers and scientists are suggesting a bold and weird path forward: using a system of satellites and artificial intelligence to monitor the world’s nukes. “To be clear, this is plan B,” Matt Korda, an associate director at the Federation of American Scientists, tells WIRED. Korda has written a report at FAS that outlines a possible future for arms control in a world where all the old treaties have died. In Inspections Without Inspectors, Korda and coauthor Igor Morić describe a new way to monitor the world’s nuclear weapons they call “cooperative technical means.” In short, satellites and other remote sensing technology would do the work that scientists and inspectors once did on the ground. Korda says AI could help this process. “Something that artificial intelligence …

‘Deeply insecure’: Why Bangladeshi minorities are scared ahead of elections | Bangladesh Election 2026

‘Deeply insecure’: Why Bangladeshi minorities are scared ahead of elections | Bangladesh Election 2026

Dhaka, Bangladesh — Sukumar Pramanik, a Hindu teacher in Rajshahi city – about 250km (155 miles) from Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka – says the country’s upcoming national election could be his final test of trust in politics. Electoral periods in Bangladesh have seen spikes in communal and political violence throughout the country’s history, with religious minorities often bearing the brunt amid intense political competition and social tension. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list But since August 2024, and the end of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule, minorities in Bangladesh have felt under siege, with reports of attacks, killings and arson against their property, even though the government insists that most incidents were not motivated by religious hate. That backdrop has intensified fears ahead of the February 12 election, despite efforts by leading political parties to reach out to minority communities. “The leaders of major parties have assured us that we will be safe before and after the vote,” Pramanik said, but faith in politicians runs low in his community at the moment. After the …

Trump Admin Warns FEMA Not to Talk About “Ice” in Winter Storm Because They’re Scared People Will Use the Clips to Make Fun of ICE

Richard Tsong-Taatarii/The Minnesota Star Tribune via Getty Images As a severe winter storm approaches, the Trump administration has bigger concerns on its plate: not getting trolled on the internet. And, we almost forgot to mention, memes. On Thursday, Homeland Security officials instructed disaster response staff at the Federal Emergency Management Agency to avoid using the word “ice” in public messaging about the impending storm for an incredible reason, CNN reports: because of all the outrage surrounding the other ICE, the US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.  The urgent concern, according to two sources familiar with the directive, is that it could not only cause confusion, but heaps of online mockery.  “If FEMA says, ‘Keep off the roads if you see ice,’ it would be easy for the public to meme it,” one of the sources told CNN.  Ice posing a threat to the safety of American citizens? Gallows humor on the topic certainly does spring to mind — the controversial agency shot and killed another protestor today. The unorthodox guidance, according to CNN‘s sourcing, was delivered …

The Real-Life Diet of Alex Honnold, Who Still Gets Scared While Climbing

The Real-Life Diet of Alex Honnold, Who Still Gets Scared While Climbing

It has become popular to describe Alex Honnold as the Michael Jordan of rock climbing. Except, Michael Jordan missed over half the shots he ever took in the NBA. If Honnold misses, the stakes are much, much higher. Never was that more apparent than in the 2018 Academy Award-winning documentary Free Solo, which followed Honnold as he became the first person ever to successfully free solo (that is, climb without ropes or any protective equipment) the 3,000-foot El Capitan rock formation in Yosemite National Park. Since then, Honnold has kept busy with the Planet Visionaries podcast—a documentary-style show in which every episode features a new guest discussing the planet’s most imperative environmental challenges—which is now in its fifth season. But the urge to climb has always remained, and on Friday, January 23 at 8 p.m. ET, Honnold is embarking on another titanic climbing expedition live on Netflix: free soloing Taipei 101, the tallest building in Taiwan and 11th tallest in the world. Obviously, scaling a building without any sort of safety net is terrifying to …

Labour MPs Accused Of ‘Running Scared Of Own Toxic Brand’ Online

Labour MPs Accused Of ‘Running Scared Of Own Toxic Brand’ Online

Labour MPs have been mocked after appearing to ditch their party’s traditional red branding for green. HuffPost UK has discovered that at least seven backbenchers are using green backdrops on their social media pages. It comes as polls suggest millions of voters who backed Labour last year have switched their support to the Green Party, who are now led by the left-winger Zack Polanski. The seven MPs – James Asser, Danny Beales, Tracy Gilbert, Leigh Ingham, Uma Kumaran, Keir Mather and Oliver Ryan – have chosen green as the main colour on their X profiles. While they all still describe themselves as Labour MPs in their bios, there is only a small flash of red in some of their profile photos. James Asser, MP for West Ham and Beckton Danny Beales, MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip Keir Mather, MP for Selby and Kippax Uma Kumaran, MP for Stratford and Bow Oliver Ryan, MP for Burnley Mothin Ali, Green Party deputy leader, told HuffPost UK: “This Labour government is offering no change and no hope, …
