Three people have been rushed to hospital after a terrifying incident in the sea near Clacton Pier as the UK’s fourth heatwave continues to bake the country. Emergency services, including an air ambulance helicopter, swarmed the popular Essex beauty spot shortly after 4:30pm today following frantic reports of swimmers in distress. Hero rescuers brought all three individuals back to shore before paramedic crews took over to provide urgent medical treatment on the sand. All three victims were subsequently rushed to hospital for further care. The dramatic rescue unfolded in front of packed crowds enjoying the scorching summer sun along the Essex coast. An Essex Police spokesperson said: “All emergency services have been at the scene of an incident close to Clacton Pier, which began shortly after 4.30pm today. “Ambulance service colleagues reported three people had got into difficulty in the water and had been brought ashore. BEIRUT — Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for attacks on Saudi oil facilities Saturday, in the first such strikes since 2022. In a video statement, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group fired ballistic missiles and drones at facilities belonging to the state oil company, Aramco, in the Red Sea towns of Yanbu and Jazan. In addition to Pancake’s release from Coney Island, five rehabilitated Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are back swimming in the ocean off Cape Cod. The New England Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy released the sea turtles following seven months of rehabilitation.. The animals were all treated for various life-threatening medical conditions, including pneumonia, dehydration, and trauma.  As per tradition, the staff names each year’s batch of rescued turtles along the same theme. This year’s theme was fonts. The released turtles are: Times New Roman (#512). Named for a classic typeface originally commissioned in 1931, this turtle was stranded December 3, 2025, in Dennis, Massachusetts. Papyrus (Turtle #579). …

Concerns that the UK will U-turn on its pledge to phase out North Sea drilling have resurfaced, following the appointment of Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Last year, under Keir Starmer’s government, the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) ended exploration licensing in the North Sea. This means that drilling companies cannot get permission to search for new oil and gas reserves in previously untapped areas, but doesn’t prohibit existing projects. Will Andy Burnham approve new drilling in the North Sea? Before Burnham had even been inaugurated, reports claimed he was preparing to announce plans for new oil and gas drilling. Much of the speculation revolves around two major oil and gas fields off the coast of Scotland (Rose bank and Jackdaw) which were approved for drilling in 2022 and 2023 under the previous Conservative government, but were overturned in 2025 after a legal challenge. BRUSSELS: The European Union’s top diplomat demanded on Thursday (Jul 23) that the Houthis “cease” attacks on ships in the Red Sea, after a Saudi vessel was hit by the Iran-backed rebels. “The attack on an oil tanker in the Red Sea is unacceptable, illegal and further inflames an already volatile situation in the region,” EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in a statement. “The Houthis must cease all actions that endanger international shipping and the lives of seafarers,” she added. The attack on Saudi shipping in the Red Sea brought the war roiling the Middle East to a new front and sent oil prices surging. Earlier this week, the Houthis said they had struck two Saudi oil tankers after declaring a blockade of Saudi ports. Kallas said an EU naval mission deployed in the Red Sea to help ships pass through the vital waterway “remains firmly committed to protecting freedom of navigation for all”. Source link
