10 Sneaky Ways Restaurants Secretly Make People Overeat

Unfortunately, there are many sneaky ways restaurants secretly make people overeat. And though some establishments tout providing high-quality foods, the dietary quality of restaurant meals is much lower compared to food cooked at home, creating potential problems. So, before you eat a meal outside of your home, remember that things aren’t always as they seem. Here are the sneaky ways restaurants often make people overeat: 1. Bottomless drinks and refills antonioodiaz | Shutterstock While it may seem like free refills are a great perk, with the cost of living rising, having anything free nowadays is a rarity in itself. However, while free refills on drinks don’t sound problematic, they can pose an issue when it comes to consumption.  A study published in Psychological Science found that free refills actually increased consumption in customers, particularly when a waiter offered to serve that refill. Of course, this issue can be made better or worse depending on the size of the cup, but free refills are a slippery slope of overconsumption without people even realizing it.  RELATED: 13 …

UAE denies Netanyahu secretly visited the country during the Iran war

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quietly visited the United Arab Emirates during the Israeli-U.S. war with Iran, his office said Wednesday. The UAE later denied any secret visit had occurred. Netanyahu met with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in a gathering that “resulted in a historic breakthrough in relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates,” according to the Israeli statement. The Gulf nation normalized relations with Israel in 2020. The UAE’s official WAM news agency later posted an article denying “reports circulating” about a Netanyahu visit. According to WAM, the country’s relations with Israel “are public and conducted within the framework of the well-known and officially declared Abraham Accords, and are not based on non-transparent or unofficial arrangements.” The Emirati report also denied any Israeli military delegation was received in the UAE. Israel’s announcement came a day after U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee revealed that Israel had sent Iron Dome air-defense weapons and personnel to operate them to the UAE. The UAE has faced Iranian missile and …

The AI Industry Is Secretly Powered by Homeless People

The AI Industry Is Secretly Powered by Homeless People

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Last year, a San Francisco-based AI company called Mercor exploded onto the tech scene, just as US workers were buckling under the grip of unemployment. The online job marketplace connects contractors — often struggling unemployed workers — with companies like OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. The gigs have a ghoulish tint, since the basic idea is for former employees to teach AI how to do their old jobs. Adding insult to injury, Mercor is known for treating its workers poorly. Now, a mini documentary published by More Perfect Union pulls the curtain back even further on companies like Mercor. In the video, reporter Karen Hao interviews a series of data workers — many of whom wanted to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation — about what it’s like to be employed by what the nonprofit calls “America’s AI sweatshops.” Perhaps the project’s most eye-catchingly tragic stat comes from 2025 research by the Communication Workers of America, which found …

I Work in Hollywood. Everyone Who Used to Make TV Is Now Secretly Training AI

People who had previously felt paralyzed by their NDA’s began to talk. Helena, the conflict-avoidant moderator of the Mercor subreddit, worked overtime deleting furious rants from aggrieved workers who delighted in dropping names of the “secret projects”—something explicitly banned by the non-disclosure agreement every tasker must sign before being hired as an Independent Contractor. Elsewhere, on another project, Handsome Swede was not faring well. Felled by Covid, he told his team leaders he could not make the minimum weekly requirement and was swiftly fired. He entered the melee once again to find yet another project. The wages were dropping week by week. When I first started scrolling the contractor jobs in early 2025, companies like Mercor, Handshake, Turing, Task-ify and Outlier were offering $150 an hour for “experts,” $35 to $75 an hour for “generalists.” Today, Mercor says the average hourly rate on its platform is $105. But in my searches across the industry near the start of 2026, the experts were often getting $50 an hour, and the entry-level grunt workers were getting as …

Man Wearing Smart Glasses Secretly Records Woman, Demands Money to Delete Video From His Socials

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech A man secretly filmed a woman with smart glasses, before demanding money to take down the video he uploaded online. The woman told the BBC that when the man first approached her while she was walking into a London shopping center, she had no idea she was being filmed. “In the moment I just thought ‘OK this guy is just trying to talk to me, to chat me up,’” she said (the broadcaster didn’t reveal her real name, but identified her as Alice.) “I was hoping that he would leave me alone eventually but he did actually follow me.” Alice only realized what happened when a friend sent her the video, which had racked up about 40,000 views. “My initial reaction was complete shock,” she said. “He had no phone, he did not have a camera directly in my face.” The alleged encounter grimly underscores the privacy and safety concerns that critics have raised over smart glasses. Since …

Your old smartphone is secretly the best smart home device you already own

Your old smartphone is secretly the best smart home device you already own

You probably have an old iPhone sitting unused in a drawer. It may be a couple of generations behind, but if the screen and Wi-Fi work, it could be your best smart home controller yet. I’ve been using my old iPhone 16 Pro Max as a dedicated home controller since I upgraded last fall, and I genuinely wonder why it took me so long to figure this out. Dedicated smart home tablets and displays can cost between $100 and $300. Your old iPhone? It’s probably already been paid for and has simply been collecting dust until now. Related I turned my old tablet into a smart home dashboard, and it’s perfect I use my 1st-gen iPad Pro as a smart home dashboard Why you should stop using your main phone as a smart home controller A dedicated device removes every friction point If you use Apple HomeKit, the Home app is always just a swipe away on your main phone. That sounds convenient enough until it isn’t. Handing your phone to a guest to dim …
