Daphne Lemelin | Afp | Getty Images Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has announced plans for the oil-rich province to hold a non-binding vote in the fall on whether its residents wish to remain a part of Canada — or move ahead with a second binding vote on separation. The move marks the first time in Canadian history that a province other than Quebec has put the question of separation to the public and comes after months of campaigning from a group of separatists. Speaking during a televised address on Thursday evening, Alberta’s Smith said she supports the province remaining in Canada and would vote as such in a provincial referendum. “However, despite my personal support for remaining in Canada, I’m deeply troubled by an erroneous court decision that interferes with the democratic rights of hundreds of …

Separate Peace? Saudi Arabia Floats Regional Non-Aggression Pact With Iran

Are regional Gulf countries seeking to forge there own separate peace deals with Iran, apart from the United States? That’s what fresh Thursday reporting in the Financial Times suggests. The report says Saudi Arabia is supposedly considering a non-aggression pact between the Middle East states and Iran after the military conflict between the United States and Iran ends, the FT indicates. via Express Tribune Citing diplomatic sources, it describes that Riyadh is assessing a model of the Helsinki Process, which helped reduce tensions in Europe during the Cold War, and created an uneasy East-West peace in post-WW2 Europe.  The driving rationale behind the potential diplomatic framework is that while Iran is “weakened,” the reality is that it still “poses a threat to its neighbors.“ An Arab diplomat cited by FT said that a non-aggression pact modelled along the lines of the Helsinki process is something likely to be embraced by most Arab and Muslim states, as well as by Iranian leader. “It all depends on who is in it – in the current climate, you …

Appeals court rejects California tribal bid consolidating separate Kalshi prediction market disputes cases

The Ninth Circuit has turned away an effort to move a closely followed Kalshi appeal onto the same judicial track as a separate Nevada dispute involving sports event contracts. In a short order issued May 6, the appeals court denied a request to reassign the case brought by Blue Lake Rancheria and other tribal plaintiffs against Kalshi Inc. and related defendants. The appeal is pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit under case number 25-7504 after originating in federal court in San Francisco. Ninth Circuit denies California Tribes' motion to reassign their prediction markets case to the same 3-judge panel which just heard oral argument in the appeal filed by Kalshi, Robinhood and Crypto, citing "significant differences" between the two appeals (i.e., IGRA v. UIGEA). pic.twitter.com/cK0yjLNrK6 — Daniel Wallach (@WALLACHLEGAL) May 9, 2026 The court said the request failed because the California dispute differed substantially from another case already argued before a separate Ninth Circuit panel involving North American Derivatives Exchange and Nevada regulators. “Due to significant differences between this appeal …

Manipulative people use both kindness and gossip as separate tools to control their social circles

Manipulative people use both kindness and gossip as separate tools to control their social circles

People who manipulate social circles through gossip or exclusion are largely driven by dark personality traits, and possessing positive traits generally fails to stop this behavior. Researchers found that while acting kindly toward others can slightly reduce the likelihood of engaging in social sabotage, it does not erase the influence of underlying malevolence. The findings were recently published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences. Relational aggression involves intentionally harming someone’s relationships or social standing instead of using physical violence. Examples include spreading malicious rumors, giving the silent treatment, or organizing a group to purposely exclude a specific person. Because it is subtle, individuals seeking to avoid open conflict often prefer it over direct confrontation. This dynamic frequently plays out in adult environments like workplaces, community groups, and extended friend circles. Victims of this type of aggression frequently face serious mental health consequences. Being targeted can lead to increased depression, hopelessness, and extreme loneliness. The individuals who dish out this aggression also experience difficulties. Perpetrators frequently report their own struggles with anxiety, risky habits, and …
