Scores killed in Baloch separatist attack in southwest Pakistan

Separatists from Pakistan’s Balochistan province claimed responsibility for nearly a dozen coordinated attacks across southern Pakistan early Saturday that targeted civilians, a high-security prison, police stations and paramilitary installations. Eleven civilians, 10 security personnel and 67 insurgents were killed, authorities said.  Though Baloch separatists and the Pakistani Taliban frequently target security forces in Balochistan and elsewhere in the country, coordinated attacks on this scale are rare. Authorities said at least 108 militants have been killed across Balochistan over the past 48 hours, including 67 on Saturday.  The dead included 11 civilians, among them three women and three children, in the city of Gwadar in Balochistan, police official Ibad Khan said. He said the dead civilians were ethnic Baloch. Khan said police quickly responded to the attack and killed all the attackers. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said in a statement that 10 security officers were killed.  The Baloch Liberation Army, or BLA, claimed responsibility the attacks, during which some of the banks were also robbed. It released videos showing female fighters taking part in the …

‘Last straw’: Somalia cuts UAE ties after Yemen separatist’s illegal entry | Conflict News

Somalia tore up its agreements with the United Arab Emirates after UAE-backed Yemeni separatist leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi illegally entered the Gulf Arab country through the breakaway region of Somaliland, a top minister has said. Ali Omar, Somalia’s state minister for foreign affairs, told Al Jazeera that the entry of al-Zubaidi, leader of the now-defunct Southern Transitional Council (STC), into Somali territory on January 8 was “the last straw” that prompted Mogadishu to cancel all deals with Abu Dhabi. Recommended Stories list of 2 itemsend of list Somalia’s immigration authority said it launched an investigation into reports of the “alleged unauthorized use of Somalia’s national air space and airports to facilitate the movements of a fugitive political figure.” The decision to cancel the deals, announced by Somalia’s Council of Ministers on Monday, annuls agreements spanning port operations, security cooperation and defence. “Using Somalia’s airspace, Somalia’s airfields to smuggle a fugitive is not something that Somalia condones,” Omar said, describing how al-Zubaidi allegedly travelled on a UAE-registered cargo plane from Berbera port to Mogadishu. He said Somali …

This is a locator map for Yemen with its capital, Sanaa. AP hide caption toggle caption AP CAIRO — Yemen’s main separatist group and its institutions will be dismantled effective Friday, the group’s secretary-general said, following weeks of unrest in areas of southern Yemen and a day after its leader fled to the United Arab Emirates. Abdulrahman Jalal al-Sebaihi said the Southern Transitional Council would shut down all of its bodies and offices inside and outside Yemen, citing internal disagreements and mounting regional pressure. But that decision was contested by the council’s spokesman, Anwar al-Tamimi, who said on X that only the full council, under its president, can take such steps — highlighting the internal divisions within the separatist movement. Yemen has been mired for more than a decade in a civil war that involves a complex interplay of sectarian and tribal grievances and the involvement of regional powers. The Iran-aligned Houthis control the most populous regions of the country in the north, including the capital Sanaa. Meanwhile, a loose regional coalition of powers — …

Southern Yemen separatists push for secession

Supporters of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) wave South Yemen flags during a rally in Aden, Yemen, on January 2, 2026. AP In a show of defiance toward the Yemeni government and its backer Saudi Arabia, the separatists of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) announced on Friday evening, January 2, the start of a process to restore a state in southern Yemen. In a televised address, STC president Aidarous Al-Zubaidi declared a two-year transitional period. The constitutional declaration, released by the STC, outlined a self-determination referendum for the “State of South Arabia” within the borders of the former People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen, which was independent from 1967 to 1990, with Aden as its capital. The STC formed part of the internationally recognized Yemeni government and the Arab coalition established in 2015 by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to fight the Houthi rebels, who, with Iranian support, seized the capital Sanaa. However, since its founding in 2017, the separatist group, backed by the UAE, has driven the project for an independent South Yemen. …

Supporters of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a coalition of separatist groups seeking to restore the state of South Yemen, hold South Yemen flags during a rally, in Aden, Yemen, Friday. AP hide caption toggle caption AP ADEN, Yemen — Yemen’s separatist movement on Friday announced a constitution for an independent nation in the south and demanded other factions in the war-torn country accept the move in an escalation of a confrontation that has pitted Gulf powerhouses Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates against each other. The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council depicted the announcement as a declaration of independence for the south. But it was not immediately clear if the move could be implemented or was largely symbolic. Last month, STC-linked fighters seized control of two southern provinces from Saudi-backed forces and took over the Presidential Palace in the south’s main city, Aden. Members of the internationally recognized government — which had been based in Aden — fled to the Saudi-capital Riyadh. On Friday, Saudi warplanes bombed camps and military positions held by the …
