‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Owen and Teddy Exits Explained as ‘Painful’ Decision

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Owen and Teddy Exits Explained as ‘Painful’ Decision

[This story contains major spoilers from the season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy.] Grey’s Anatomy fans were surprised when it was announced that longtime stars Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver would be leaving the show at the end of this season. In the season 22 finale that aired on Thursday night, the two actors who play Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman walked off the ABC set for their last time together, after their divorced characters reconciled and decided to make a new life with the children they share in Paris. Teddy and Owen were given a happy ending, and the reason they survived the often deadly and always dramatic medical drama is because showrunner Meg Marinis wanted to leave the door open for their return. The move to write off Owen and Teddy from Grey’s was a difficult one, sparked by a financial decision. “I feel like we gave them a beautiful ending,” Marinis tells The Hollywood Reporter of the actors who joined Grey’s in season five and season six, respectively. “Those are …

Grey’s Anatomy Cliffhanger Set Up Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver Finale Exits

Grey’s Anatomy could send Owen and Teddy off with a happy ending — or not. ABC announced last month that veteran stars Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver would be exiting the long-running medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes in the upcoming May 7 season finale. The actors have played Owen and Teddy, respectively, since season five for McKidd and season six for Raver (she took five years off and later returned). Their co-departure is major news for the hit series, which has successfully navigated a changing industry and remains a hit in its 22nd season, but it also makes sense narratively. Their characters are intricately linked on the series as coparents who have had a long on-and-off relationship on the series. The doctors came onto the show as best friends. They eventually got married in season 18, only to split up recently, finalizing their divorce at the beginning of this season. The pair, who share two children, have been toying with reconciling of late, however, and have been sleeping together in recent episodes. Which brings …

With That Action-Packed Finale, Bridgerton Enters a Bold New Era, Says Showrunner Jess Brownell

With That Action-Packed Finale, Bridgerton Enters a Bold New Era, Says Showrunner Jess Brownell

Vanity Fair: Bridgerton has one of the most vocal fanbases on TV. What has surprised you most about the reaction to season four so far? Jess Brownell: Seeing the response to Benedict’s faux pas, asking Sophie to be his mistress. This was a giant mistake really based on his greatest character flaw, which is his lack of conviction or bravery when it comes to committing to something that requires Benedict stepping out of society. It really makes sense from a story perspective, but I forget that everyone doesn’t know the books. But just because it was really common for people in the 1800s to take mistresses of another class doesn’t make it morally acceptable, and we’re absolutely asking Benedict to pay for his crimes in the back half. A big trope of romance novels is the male hero saves the young woman. But when you have an actress as dynamic as Yerin Ha, it felt really important to see Sophie having a bit more of a hand in her own fate. So, we tried to …

The actor appeared in 10 seasons of the ABC medical drama, where he portrayed plastic surgeon Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy.” Dane portrayed the character in seasons two through nine, the latter of which was where Mark died. He made one more appearance on Grey’s Anatomy‘s for a cameo during the 17th season. Series creator Shonda Rhimes shared a statement with The Hollywood Reporter on behalf of Shondaland, noting, “Eric Dane was a beloved member of the Shondaland and Grey’s Anatomy families. He was truly a gifted actor whose portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan left an indelible mark on the series and on audiences around the world.” “We are grateful for the artistry, spirit, friendship and humanity he shared with us for so many years,” Rhimes continued. “Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his work.” ABC and 20th Television released a …

Bridgerton Author Julia Quinn Says Political Advocacy Has “Felt More Important Than Writing Books”

Bridgerton Author Julia Quinn Says Political Advocacy Has “Felt More Important Than Writing Books”

Warning, gentle reader: spoilers ahead for Bridgerton season four, as well as plot points from the novels. Three days before Bridgerton season four debuted, author Julia Quinn was grappling with how to balance her professional projects with the state of the world. “You get to the point where you have to say something,” Quinn, whose eight interlocking books serve as the inspiration for the hit streaming series Bridgerton, tells Vanity Fair. “You can’t let this moment pass.” Faced with the prospect of promoting the show’s latest installment, plus her new subscription book box, Quinn knew she couldn’t plug her upcoming projects without declaring her opposition to “a government who’s killing people and abducting children” amid the contentious ICE presence in Minnesota. “If you get to a point where it feels like talking about anything but that is in poor taste, then that’s what you have to talk about,” Quinn says, speaking from Spotify’s New York office (her entire Bridgerton series is available as audiobooks on Spotify). A few days earlier, Quinn posted a video to …

How Bridgerton Season 4 Changes the Book’s Most Controversial Storyline

How Bridgerton Season 4 Changes the Book’s Most Controversial Storyline

When viewed through the lens of modern power dynamics, Benedict asking someone who works for him to be his mistress is problematic. But in the early 1800s, making Sophie such an offer “is, honestly, exactly what he would have done,” Quinn said at a book event in 2023. “Even if he thought he loved her desperately, marriage would not have been the first thing on his mind because that’s just not how society worked then,” Quinn continued, hastening to add that, by book’s end, Benedict has reformed his rakish ways. “He did eventually realize being with her was more important to him, and then they did get married. As you’ll see in later books, they live a quiet life in the country because they kind of have to. It’s not a fully accepted marriage.” This plot device is central to the book’s narrative, in that Benedict’s offer triggers Sophie’s feelings about not wanting to live the life her mother did as mistress to a man in upper society. It also exacerbates Benedict’s inner turmoil about …
