The Florida Mass Shooter’s Conversations With ChatGPT Are Worse Than You Could Possibly Imagine

The Florida Mass Shooter’s Conversations With ChatGPT Are Worse Than You Could Possibly Imagine

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech In the months before he committed a grisly mass shooting, Phoenix Ikner obsessively used Open AI’s ChatGPT to engage in conversations that are about as disturbing as possible. Over the course of more than 13,000 messages with the bot obtained by the Florida Phoenix, the student at Florida State University (FSU) called himself an incel, bemoaned that God had abandoned him, repeatedly asked about Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh — and, most significantly, used ChatGPT to plan the April 17, 2025 mass shooting at his college campus that killed two and wounded seven. “If there was a shooting at FSU, how would the country react?” the then-20-year old asked the day of the massacre, along with an eyepopping question: “By how many victims does it usually get on the medi[a?].” These alarming conversations not only reveal Ikner’s disturbed state of mind, but they also bring up difficult questions about a possible link between ChatGPT use and violence, whether …

Minnesota kicks off legal battle to hold ICE shooters accountable

Minnesota kicks off legal battle to hold ICE shooters accountable

They asked nicely at first. After an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three who’d recently moved to Minneapolis, local law enforcement officials requested a partnership with the federal government to investigate the case, as they’d done in past shootings involving federal agents. When the Trump administration refused to cooperate, Minnesota prosecutors ratcheted up their efforts. They sent a series of strongly worded legal letters demanding evidence in the Good shooting as well as the shootings of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan immigrant who was wounded a week after Good was shot, and Alex Pretti, who was killed on Jan. 24. Still, the administration rebuffed the requests. This week, prosecutors from Hennepin County and the state of Minnesota took the next step to force the Trump administration’s hand. They filed a federal lawsuit against the departments of Homeland Security and Justice over the evidence in the shootings, an action that Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, whose jurisdiction covers Minneapolis, characterized as “unprecedented in American history.” The Trump …

OpenAI debated calling police about suspected Canadian shooter’s chats

OpenAI debated calling police about suspected Canadian shooter’s chats

An 18-year-old who allegedly killed eight people in a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, reportedly used OpenAI’s ChatGPT in ways that alarmed the company’s staff. Jesse Van Rootselaar’s chats describing gun violence were flagged by tools that monitor the company’s LLM for misuse and banned in June 2025. Staff at the company debated whether or not to reach out to Canadian law enforcement over the behavior but ultimately did not, according to the Wall Street Journal. An OpenAI spokesperson said Van Rootselaar’s activity did not meet the criteria for reporting to law enforcement; the company reached out to Canadian authorities after the incident. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the Tumbler Ridge tragedy,” an OpenAI spokesperson said in a statement. “We proactively reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with information on the individual and their use of ChatGPT, and we’ll continue to support their investigation.” ChatGPT transcripts weren’t the only concerning part of Van Rootselaar’s digital footprint. She apparently created a game on Roblox, the world simulation platform frequented by children, …

OpenAI Flagged a Mass Shooter’s Troubling Conversations With ChatGPT Before the Incident, Decided Not to Warn Police

Paige Taylor White / AFP via Getty Images) A grim scoop from the Wall Street Journal: an automated review system at OpenAI flagged disturbing conversations that a future mass shooter was having with the company’s flagship AI ChatGPT — but, despite being urged by employees at the company to warn law enforcement, OpenAI leadership opted not to. The 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar ultimately killed eight people including herself and injured 25 more in British Columbia earlier this month, in a tragedy that shook Canada and the world. What we didn’t know until today is that employees at OpenAI had already been aware of Van Rootselaar for months, and had debated alerting authorities because of the alarming nature of her conversations with ChatGPT. In the conversations with OpenAI’s chatbot, according to sources at the company who spoke to the WSJ, Van Rootselaar “described scenarios involving gun violence.” The sources say they recommended that the company warn authorities local authorities, but that leadership at the company decided against it. An OpenAI spokesperson didn’t dispute those claims, telling …

Alex Pretti shooters named and revealed

ProPublica has confirmed the names of the two immigration enforcement agents wo shot and killed Alex Pretti. And their identities might be surprising to many liberals who are forming their impressions about Border Control and ICE from Democratic talking heads on cable news.  I’m speaking, of course, about progressive pundit Tiffany Cross, for one, who appeared on CNN last week and expressed… Source link
