Trump disputes Iran’s version of peace deal as both sides give clashing accounts

DUBAI: United States President Donald Trump said Friday (Jun 12) that Tehran’s stated version of a proposed US-Iran deal on stopping the war is not what was agreed to. Iran’s description of the proposed agreement “bears no relation to the truth”, Trump said, labelling the Iranians “very dishonourable people to deal with”. “They better get their act together, and FAST!” Trump said in a statement on his Truth Social platform, denying that the US had made major concessions to Iran. Iran insisted on Friday on its right to enrich uranium and maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz under any deal with the US, after Trump said a draft accord was ready. Iran’s version of the deal, as outlined by the IRNA news agency, said that the US will release part of Iran’s frozen assets immediately after the deal is signed, with the remainder freed gradually during further negotiations.  It says Iran’s nuclear programme remains untouched.  However, a White House official said that Iran agreed to dismantle its nuclear programme and destroy nuclear material under …

OpenAI and Anthropic May Be Rivals, but Investors Aren’t Picking Sides

OpenAI and Anthropic May Be Rivals, but Investors Aren’t Picking Sides

OpenAI and Anthropic have battled for workers, customers, and public attention. The rival AI labs have been on opposite sides of policy proposals, and their CEOs were the only ones not to link hands among a dozen industry leaders at a business summit earlier this year. But they do have one big area of overlap: their investors. About 90 venture capital firms and other money managers have invested in both OpenAI and Anthropic over the past few years, according to a WIRED analysis of data from PitchBook, a platform that tracks startup investments. OpenAI shares about 42 percent of its overall investors with Anthropic, according to the data. Roughly a third of Anthropic investors are also OpenAI backers, including major firms like Sequoia Capital, Greylock, Founders Fund, Redpoint Ventures, Emerson Collective, and Sound Ventures. Just last week, Anthropic made a fundraising announcement that named 31 investors—at least 13 of which have stakes in OpenAI, according to the PitchBook data and WIRED reporting. The number of common investors may be an undercount, because collecting information about …

Wayne Rooney backs England for World Cup glory: “Other sides should fear us”

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine. Wayne Rooney played at the World Cup Finals of 2006, 2010 and 2014. He will be a studio analyst on BBC TV, while his podcast The Wayne Rooney Show will drop twice weekly throughout the tournament. Here, he speaks to Radio Times about his expectations and predictions for the summer ahead. This is the first World Cup where you’ve had a major broadcast/podcast role. Are you excited? Yes! I did a bit at the Euros two years ago, to give me a taste of how it works. Hopefully it’s successful, especially if England reach the final. I really see them there. It’s a great squad and a top-class manager. We need to manage the climate all right, and the knockout stage could be difficult. The different scenarios mean it could be a better pathway if they don’t win the group. Do pre-match broadcasting nerves compare with pre-match playing nerves? I like being prepared for what I’m doing. There are some players from different teams where you want …

Why buttons and zippers are on different sides of men’s and women’s clothes

Why buttons and zippers are on different sides of men’s and women’s clothes

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Imagine you’re at a clothing store that stocks items for the whole family. You pick up a white buttoned shirt to try on. The style is pretty plain. Was it designed to be worn by a woman or man? There may be a clue: Many women’s shirts have buttons on the left side, while men’s shirts usually button on the right. Even zippers in pants and jackets sometimes follow the same pattern. But why does clothing fasten differently depending on whether it’s made for men or women? Fashion researchers and historians like us have wondered about this gender difference. The answer has a lot to do with tradition, history and the way clothes were made long ago. Even small details, like a zipper, can …

Should AI be in K-12? Both sides of the debate weigh in.

Should AI be in K-12? Both sides of the debate weigh in.

New York City, with the largest public school district in the country, was breaking ground on a novel, AI-themed high school when district leadership abruptly pulled the plug last month. They cited mounting parental concern and nationwide backlash to what has been labeled rapid, unsafe adoption of AI.  Because there has been a rapid adoption of AI among students across the country. Used properly, the tech could transform learning, many argue, and fill gaps in an overburdened education system. But others worry it’ll be a generational misstep that could worsen learning development. Mashable spoke with a dozen stakeholders — parents, child safety advocates, AI literacy experts, tech leaders, and a state representative proposing stronger EdTech regulation — to lay out what is at stake when you add AI to the equation.  SEE ALSO: How to defend yourself against AI cheating accusations AI moratoriums: Safe choice or miscalculation? Dylan Arena, chief data science and AI officer for education solutions giant McGraw Hill, told Mashable that the history of EdTech is cyclical. First there was the introduction of …

California’s single-use plastic law is angering all sides

California’s single-use plastic law is angering all sides

Within days of California’s long-anticipated single-use plastic law going into effect, environmentalists, anti-waste activists and the packaging industry reacted with anger and frustration. Anti-plastic activists say Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration and CalRecycle inserted exemptions favoring the plastic industry into the law’s regulations that weaken it and undermine legislative intent. “These new rules create huge loopholes for plastic packaging that violate the law,” said Avinash Kar, senior director of the toxics program at the Natural Resources Defense Council. On the other side, the packaging industry has sued over similar laws in other states. “Our members have real concerns about cost, compliance, and constitutionality,” said Matt Clarke, spokesman for the National Assn. of Wholesaler-Distributors, which sued Oregon earlier this year over a similar waste law. CalRecycle, the state’s waste agency, did not respond in time for publication. The final regulations putting the law into effect were released May 1 and posted for review Tuesday. The environmental organizations say the law’s new final regulations open the door to what is known as “chemical recycling,” which produces large amounts …

King Charles Won’t “Take Sides” Between Donald Trump and Keir Starmer—but He Can Help Repair the Alliance

King Charles Won’t “Take Sides” Between Donald Trump and Keir Starmer—but He Can Help Repair the Alliance

King Charles could play a unique role as a potential mediator during his four-day state visit to America this week. King Charles and Queen Camilla’s official visit will begin Monday with tea in the Oval Office, followed by a state dinner hosted by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. After shots were fired during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, Buckingham Palace has said security will be increased during the royal state visit. “Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the state visit by their majesties will proceed as planned,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement released Sunday. “The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting under way tomorrow.” Earlier on Sunday, the Palace said Charles was being “kept fully informed of developments” and was “greatly relieved to hear that the president, first lady and all guests have …
