Mexico’s goalkeeper Ochoa set to hang up gloves after his sixth World Cup

April 30 : Guillermo Ochoa, one of the most iconic goalkeepers in Mexican football history, will hang up his gloves immediately after the World Cup, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. “Memo Ochoa will play his sixth World Cup representing Mexico, as the legendary goalkeeper will be part of the squad. Ochoa will retire from professional football immediately after, leaving his club and the national team,” Romano, who specialises in news about soccer transfers, wrote on X.  Ochoa appeared to confirm the news himself by reposting Romano’s message. The World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada, will be a landmark occasion for the 40-year-old shot-stopper, who could become one of the very few players in history, alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, to appear in six World Cup tournaments. Ochoa first represented Mexico on the world stage at Germany 2006 and went on to feature at South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, where he famously saved a penalty from Poland’s Robert Lewandowski. During his 22-year career at club level, …

Sixth forms’ fury over real-terms cut to finding

More from this theme Recent articles Sixth forms have warned resources are being “stretched to the limit” and funding levels are unsustainable, as ministers announced lower-than-expected increases for post-16 students. The Department for Education announced last week that the national funding rate for 16- to 19-year-olds would rise by just 0.5 per cent in 2026-27. Yet the skills white paper last October had promised above-inflation increases, given rising numbers of 16- to 19-year-olds. Inflation is currently running at 3 per cent, and stood at 3.6 per cent when the pledge was made. Sixth form leaders have said the funding gap could threaten their ability to offer a broad range of subjects, hold down class sizes and pay staff competitively. They added that the timing of the announcement would leave them “flying blind” just as students are choosing their options. The 0.5 per cent increase, which lifts per-pupil funding to £5,133 next year, is the lowest since rates were frozen in 2021-22. Last year funding rates rose 5.4 per cent, significant above inflation. ‘Unacceptable and unworkable’ …

The San Antonio Spurs’ sixth man is a real-life cowboy who wears actual spurs

The San Antonio Spurs’ sixth man is a real-life cowboy who wears actual spurs

Johnson grew up in South Hill, Virginia, a rural area with a population of about 5,000, near the North Carolina border. His father drove 18-wheelers, which meant early mornings and long days. As a young boy, Keldon would sometimes ride with him. His father taught him to fish and hunt, too, a rite of passage in that part of the world. “If you go to Virginia and see the sign that says ‘country’ and then you take a right to go deeper in the country — that’s where he’s from,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. But Keldon grew to be 6-feet-5, 200-plus pounds and one of the country’s top basketball prospects for his age. He played at Oak Hill Academy, the famed Virginia prep school that produced Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, and then a year at the University of Kentucky, where his freshmen class included future pros Tyler Herro and Immanuel Quickley. The Spurs drafted Johnson in the first round in 2019, when the organization was going through a seismic shift. The Tim Duncan-Tony …

Sixth forms face real-terms cut, leaders warn

More from this theme Recent articles School sixth forms and colleges face a real-terms cut in their funding next year, leaders have warned, after the government confirmed rates for 16 and 17-year-olds will rise by just 0.5 per cent. Ministers have been accused of breaking a promise for a real-terms funding increase for 16 to 19 year olds made in last year’s white paper to ease demographic pressures. The Department for Education today confirmed the national funding rate for 16 and 17 year old learners will only rise by 0.5 per cent in academic year 2026-27, from £5,105 to £5,133. This marks the lowest increase since funding rates were frozen in 2021-22. Claire Green, post-16 and skills specialist at the ASCL leaders’ union, said the funding rate announced yesterday “does not align” with the white paper ambition, “nor does it support the government’s previous commitment to improving the financial stability of the sector”. “The money that has been given to this part of the sector is being spread extremely thinly because student numbers are growing. …

Turkey’s Erdogan offers to try to revive a truce as Pakistan-Afghan border clashes enter sixth day

Turkey’s Erdogan offers to try to revive a truce as Pakistan-Afghan border clashes enter sixth day

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday offered to mediate for a new ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan as border clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan entered their sixth day. Pakistan’s army chief said lasting peace depends on Kabul cutting ties with militants targeting his country. The conflict erupted last week with Afghanistan launching attacks on Thursday in retaliation for Pakistani airstrikes the previous weekend. Since then, Pakistan has carried out operations along the border and declared it was in an “open war” with Afghanistan, alarming the international community. The ongoing clashes ended an earlier ceasefire brokered by Qatar and Turkey in October, when the two neighbors had again come close to a war. The truce, signed in Qatar at the time, was followed by six days of talks in Istanbul, which resulted in an agreement to extend the truce and hold a third round of negotiations in November. Those talks, held on Nov. 6 and Nov. 7 failed to produce any breakthrough and the process stalled. According to a statement from the …

‘Suffolk Strangler’ told he will die in jail as he’s sentenced for sixth murder | UK News

Police have launched a fresh appeal for information about “possible previous offending” by serial killer Steve Wright, as he was jailed for the murder of a teenager more than 25 years ago. Wright, dubbed the “Suffolk Strangler”, was told he will die in prison as he was sentenced for the abduction and murder of 17-year-old Victoria Hall. She had disappeared early on 19 September 1999 in a village on the outskirts of Felixstowe, Suffolk. Wright – who was already serving a whole-life sentence for five other murders – was sentenced on Friday to life in prison with a minimum term of 40 years for Miss Hall’s murder and the attempted abduction of Emily Doherty. Perth Scorchers win sixth BBL title after trouncing Sydney Sixers

PERTH, Jan 25 : Perth Scorchers raced to their sixth Big Bash League title on Sunday with an emphatic six-wicket victory over Sydney Sixers in the final at Perth Stadium. Earning hosting rights after crushing the Sixers in a qualifier last week, the Scorchers fielded first and bowled their six-time Grand Final rivals out for a paltry 132 in 20 overs as pacemen David Payne and Jhye Richardson combined for six wickets.  With 15 balls remaining in their reply, the hosts reached 133-4 anchored by a 43-ball 44 from Mitch Marsh. “It feels like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders. We have high expectations, and to be able to deliver on those expectations is really satisfying,” Scorchers captain Ashton Turner said. The table-topping Scorchers started their chase in audacious fashion when Marsh, Australia’s T20 captain, pulled the first ball for six.  His opening partner Finn Allen, the season’s top run-scorer with 466, got the better of quick Mitchell Starc in a 19-run fourth over, bringing the crowd to their feet with a scooped …

US military seizes sixth oil tanker it says has links to Venezuela

US forces in the Caribbean Sea have seized another sanctioned oil tanker the Trump administration says has ties to Venezuela, coming as part of a broader US effort to take control of the South American country’s oil. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote Thursday on social media, “Motor Tanker Veronica had previously passed through Venezuelan waters, and was operating in defiance of President Trump’s established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean.” A social media post from US Southern Command on the capture said that Marines and sailors launched from the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford to make the capture while Noem’s post noted that, as in previous raids, a US Coast Guard tactical team conducted the boarding and seizure. Noem posted a brief video that appeared to show part of the ship’s capture. The black-and-white footage showed helicopters hovering over the deck of a merchant vessel while armed troops dropped down on the deck by rope.
