TOKYO, April 27 : Sparkling debuts on the Tokyo bourse by a sake brewery and pet food maker last week are unlikely to revive a moribund market for new stock listings in Japan as investors remain fixated on the artificial intelligence boom. Shares of Umenoyado Brewery surged 75 per cent on their first day of trading on Friday, while Inuneko-Seikatsu traded more than 30 per cent higher than its IPO price on Monday. Even as the Japanese stock market surged to successive record highs this year, initial public offerings have disappointed, with new listings largely trading below their debut price. Reforms pushed by the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) have helped valuations jump for the overall market, but stricter listing criteria have put a damper on the IPO sector. At the same time, enthusiasm over the red-hot artificial intelligence sector has sapped interest in IPOs, which are typically small companies that are focused on domestic demand. “The IPO boom has faded because retail investors’ interest is largely focused on AI stocks. Ecstatic baroque and early music If 19th-century repertoire thrives on scale and scope, baroque and early music is all about intimacy: the husk of bow on gut strings, the purity of an unaccompanied voice. It’s music that often struggles to find a place at the Proms, but clever choices make for an intriguing lineup this year. Lutenist Thomas Dunford’s Ensemble Jupiter is a period band with the swagger and spontaneity of a rock group. They’re joined by exciting young tenor Laurence Kilsby for a late-night programme of Purcell, Handel, and John Dowland (21 July). Cabaret vibes meet immaculate style. Netflix’s Beef is the latest celebrated ‘miniseries’ to ditch that label in pursuit of further accolades, but Lee Sung Jin’s revenge-themed comedy-drama isn’t resting on its laurels in season 2. Rather, the screenwriter is bravely taking his first self-created series down the anthology path, shedding his original leads Steven Yeun and Ali Wong for an all-new story orbiting a country club for the super-rich. The recruitment of Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny is ironic, given that Beef’s evolution matches that of the iconic sci-fi horror franchise, which famously went from lone survival story Alien to all-out war flick Aliens. Beef season 2 could, accordingly, have gone by ‘Beefs’ instead, doubling the number of participants in its bitter feud as two couples become fatefully entangled by a chance encounter.
