A viral clip from the first round of US-Iran peace talks in Switzerland fuelled online speculation that US Vice President JD Vance was snubbed by Qatar’s Prime Minister, after users claimed the video shows him “ignore” Vance in favour of greeting Pakistan’s Prime Minister. The Qatari PM though, dismissed the claims as “unfounded,” saying he and Vance had already spent hours together during the talks. The White House also rejected the narrative, pointing the finger at Iran for the rumours. In posts racking up millions of views and reports, social media users claimed the viral video from the Lake Lucerne Summit is proof of a diplomatic slight, and that the Qatari leader had deliberately “ignored” Vance and chosen to greet Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif first. Users called the moment “so embarassing” and that it showed America “is a laughing stock.” Others cited the interaction as evidence of strained relations surrounding the US-Iran peace process, with some claiming it shows the “level of relations that the Trump administration has created.” The Qatari PM though, rejected the claims directly. …

X-Men and James Bond alum Famke Janssen has reiterated her claim that Marvel Studios did not invite her to return as Jean Grey in its forthcoming crossover film Avengers: Doomsday, adding that it was a “mistake” on their part. The Dutch actor is probably best known for playing the X-Men’s powerful telepath, who found herself in a love triangle with Cyclops (James Marsden) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), before her menacing Dark Phoenix persona tragically consumed her. The storyline played out across the original X-Men trilogy, while Janssen also popped up for very brief cameos in 2013’s The Wolverine and 2014’s Days of Future Past, after which Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner took over the role. Iran has said ships must seek permission to use the Strait of Hormuz and raised the prospect of future charges just days after the Prime Minister and other leaders stressed “the right of transit passage without restrictions or tolls”. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), a government agency set up by Tehran during the earlier ceasefire to control the strategic waterway, posted on social media on Friday that vessels would be required to submit requests at least 48 hours in advance to pass through the channel. It also said admin tariffs, including for “related Iranian insurances” would be waived during the 60-day negotiation period provided for by the interim peace deal to reach a lasting agreement, leaving the way open for fees being levied at a later date. With the G7 summit underway in France, some social media users are claiming that French leader Emmanuel Macron deliberately “humiliated” US President Donald Trump by not being there to greet him upon his arrival at the airport. Many posts shared a video showing Trump disembarking an aircraft and later appearing unsmiling during a handshake with Macron, suggesting the two events were linked. However, the viral footage omits important context. Social media users claimed that Macron “sent a protocol official to welcome Trump” and that the US president was “humiliated”. The context missing from these claims is that Donald Trump did not fly directly to France. He first arrived in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was greeted by the president of the Swiss Confederation, Guy Parmelin, in line with standard diplomatic protocol. Macron therefore would not have been expected to meet him at the airport, and the official shown receiving Trump at the tarmac was not “sent” by the French president. Beaches, The New Musical is the first Tonys casualty of the season and will now close May 24 after being shut out of the nominations. The show began previews at the Majestic Theatre March 27, ahead of an April 22 opening date, but has failed to catch on with audiences and with critics, who delivered mixed to negative reviews. Last week on Broadway, the musical played to just 51 percent capacity, and it has been bringing in $550,000 or less per week since opening, which is far below the running costs of an average musical.  The show, which stars Jessica Vosk and Kelli Barrett, likely hoped for nominations for its leads or for the musical itself to help right the ship.  Still, the show was always set for a limited Broadway run, through Sept. 6, before heading on a national tour. The production said Tuesday that plans are currently underway for the tour. Three members of the Los Angeles City Council’s progressive bloc are throwing their support to Mayor Karen Bass in her bid for reelection, dealing a blow to challenger Nithya Raman, their progressive ally on the council. The council members endorsing Bass — Eunisses Hernandez, Ysabel Jurado and Hugo Soto-Martínez — are all members of the Democratic Socialists of America, as is Raman. The four routinely cast dissenting council votes on increased police spending and creation of new anti-encampment zones in the city.
