“This is BRUTAL. Vance flew to Geneva for the Iran talks and the Qatari minister just flat out refused to greet him. (…) The most powerful country on earth is having a very bad day in Switzerland.” This is the claim made by Mario Nawfal, an influencer close to Elon Musk, in an X post shared on June 22 that has garnered more than two million views. The post features a video showing Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani greeting his Pakistani counterpart, Shehbaz Sharif, as he walks right past US Vice President JD Vance without shaking his hand.  The scene took place during the US-Iran talks organised near Lucerne in central Switzerland – not Geneva – where Qatar and Pakistan are serving as mediators.  The clip quickly sparked widespread reaction. In the comments section, some viewed the scene as a diplomatic snub to the US.  Others went even further, posting Islamophobic comments, such as “Don’t worry Vance, you’re better off not touching Muslims, you don’t know where those unclean hands have been!” and …

Australia defied the oddsmakers and established itself as a surprise frontrunner at the Eurovision semifinal Thursday while a trio of past winners — including 2024 champion Switzerland — failed to advance. Switzerland joined Latvia and Luxembourg as erstwhile title-holders who won’t have the chance to grab another Eurovision crown as the final 25 nations were set for the weekend’s big singing showdown in Vienna. The 70th-annual homage to soaring and sometimes silly song production will anoint a winner Saturday, ending a months-long saga that saw five countries boycott over the inclusion of Israel. The Middle Eastern nation had not broken any rules, but its presence in the competition prompted Spain, Slovenia, Ireland, Iceland and the Netherlands not to compete as a protest over Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are beginning a visit to Australia this week, which includes charitable and commercial engagements across Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. Meghan, 44, is due to appear at the women’s weekend event, Her Best Life Retreat, where a ticket costs over £1,500 (AUS$3,000). It was a startling omission. His was the kind of success story Hollywood lives for—yet this year, on the heels of his death in February, the Oscars telecast did not see fit to acknowledge Bud Cort in its In Memoriam section. What began as one battle after another for Warner Bros. movie chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy has transformed into an embarrassment of riches. On Thursday, the studio landed a jaw-dropping 30 nominations, tying its own record set in 2005. This time, the bounty was led by Ryan Cooger’s Sinners with 16 — the most nominations ever awarded to a single film. The previous record was 14 (All About Eve, Titanic, La La Land.) Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, followed with 13, the second-best showing of the day. Both are original films that many in Hollywood said would never work because they weren’t commercial enough. Even Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav was worried, with Abdy and De Luca coming under intense scrutiny in the early part of 2025 after several misses.
