Why The World Ignores Genocide in Sudan

Why The World Ignores Genocide in Sudan

A RECORD OF PAIN Nasir Jafer Ali, 26, survived an RSF drone attack on Omdurman, outside of Khartoum, which he described as “a scene of carnage.” Some estimates suggest the death toll is upwards of 400,000 since the conflict began in 2023. But these testimonies reveal a larger machinery at work. The RSF and the SAF, once aligned in their appetite to crush civilian dissent, now wage war on each other with modern and barbaric technology—and the cost falls on those caught between them: children, women, the weakest and most vulnerable. Gold and weapons flow across borders; neighboring states position themselves for profit and control. Thousands flee burned cities and villages. And the world, watching or not watching, remains silent to the crimes. The Unraveling There isn’t an easy answer as to why Sudan has descended once again into civil war. But to understand this moment, it’s useful to look at Sudan’s bloody past. The country’s first civil war began on the eve of independence and lasted from 1955 until 1972, when the southerners, who …

Canada, Bahamas Imposes Ebola-Related Travel Bans

WASHINGTON, May 26 (Reuters) – Canada and the Bahamas said on Tuesday they will temporarily ban residents from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan amid an Ebola outbreak. Residents from ‌those countries will be banned ‌from entering Canada for 90 days starting Wednesday, the Canadian government said. It said the temporary border measure aimed to reduce the risk of Ebola entering and spreading within Canada. Tedros hits back at Rubio over claims WHO was ‘a little late’ on Ebola – POLITICO

In Europe, flights to and from the region remain unaffected, with planes from Congo capital Kinshasa landing daily in Brussels. Meanwhile the bloc has so far accepted two U.S. citizens from the region: a doctor with confirmed Ebola is receiving treatment in a Berlin hospital, while a contact of an Ebola case is being taken to a clinic in Czech capital Prague. Rubio and the U.S. embassy in Czechia expressed their thanks. There have been almost 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths in the outbreak so far, Tedros said. “We know the scale of the epidemic in the DRC is much larger,” he added. As a disease, Ebola is caused by a group of viruses — in this case the rarer Bundibugyo virus for which there are no vaccines or treatments. Infection initially causes flu-like symptoms, followed by vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding from the nose or in a victim’s feces. The WHO is investigating when and where the outbreak began but estimates it started “a couple of months ago,” according to WHO emergencies expert …

Ebola: DR Congo death toll rises sharply to at least 131, WHO to host emergency meeting

Ebola: DR Congo death toll rises sharply to at least 131, WHO to host emergency meeting

The toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to an estimated 131 deaths from 513 suspected cases, Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba said. “We have recorded roughly 131 deaths in total and we have around 513 suspected cases,” Samuel Roger Kamba told Congolese national television overnight. He cautioned however that the toll was an estimate and further research was needed to confirm whether all 131 suspected deaths were indeed linked to Ebola. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has declared the outbreak a Continental Public Health Emergency, in a statement late Monday. Declaring a continental emergency empowers the Africa CDC, based in Ethiopia, to mobilise extra resources including emergency response teams and surveillance operations.  To display this content from YouTube, you must enable advertisement tracking and audience measurement. A priest vanished two years ago. South Sudan’s churches say he’s not alone.

NAIROBI, Kenya (RNS) — Two years ago, a Catholic priest and his driver set out on one of the most dangerous roads in South Sudan and were never seen again. Now, church leaders in the country say they want to know what happened to the two, and they’re putting a spotlight on the growing number of disappeared in the country.   “It’s a question of justice. We want the government to take its responsibility regarding the disappearance of these two. They are not alone; many people have also disappeared,” said Catholic Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Tombura-Yambio Diocese in South Sudan.  The Nagero-Tombura Road in South Sudan is a critical transit corridor that priests and pastors travel to bring the gospel to remote South Sudan communities, such as Western Equatoria. The road cuts through territory where armed men commit deadly robberies, kidnappings and other attacks.   It is on this road that the Rev. Luke Yugue Mbokusa, pastor of the Nazareth Nagero parish, and his driver, Michael Gbeko, disappeared without trace  while traveling from Nagero …

‘Erosion of a country’s future’: What has the war cost Sudan? | Conflict News

Three years into its civil war, Sudan has become unrecognisable with more than 40,000 people killed, about 14 million of its people – a quarter of the population – forced to flee their homes and civilian infrastructure across the country extensively damaged. “We are not just facing a crisis – we are witnessing the systematic erosion of a country’s future,” Luca Renda, the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP’s) resident representative in Sudan, told Al Jazeera. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list A report by the UNDP and the Institute for Security Studies lays out the scale of Sudan’s economic collapse since the war began in 2023 due to a power struggle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Even under the most optimistic scenario of peace being achieved in 2026, Sudan would still lose an estimated $18.8bn in its gross domestic product (GDP) by 2043, the report said, illustrating just how deeply the war has already reshaped the country’s economic trajectory. The report warned that the damage goes beyond lost …

22 migrants die off Greek coast after six days at sea

Twenty-two migrants hoping to reach Europe from North Africa have died off the coast of Greece after six days at sea in a rubber boat, survivors told the Greek coast guard on Saturday. The coast guard late Friday said 26 people, including a woman and a minor, were rescued by a European border agency vessel off the island of Crete. The coastguard later said that 21 Bangladeshis, four South Sudanese and a Chadian citizen had emerged from the ordeal alive. Survivors said the bodies of those who had died were thrown into the Mediterranean sea on the orders of one of the people smugglers aboard the ship. Two survivors were taken to hospital in Heraklion on Crete, the coastguard said. Based on survivor statements, the coastguard said the boat had left Tobruk, a port city in eastern Libya, on March 21, bound for Greece, the gateway for many migrants hoping for asylum in the European Union. “During the journey, the passengers lost their bearings and remained at sea for six days without food or water,” …

‘The Lost Bishop’ of South Sudan dies at 86

NAIROBI, Kenya (RNS) — A South Sudan bishop known in the Anglican Communion as a “lost bishop” because he went missing in the late 1980s during his country’s war against Sudan has died. The Very Rev. Nathaniel Garang, a retired bishop of Bor, died Feb. 24 while receiving treatment in Nairobi, where he has been since 2024. He was 86. The Diocese of Bor is located along the White Nile, about 200 kilometers north of South Sudan’s capital, Juba.  Sudan came apart in nearly continuous fighting from the early 1970s until the early 2000s, in a war that began in resistance to government policies that included forced Islamization for the southern region, where many inhabitants are Christian or followers of African traditional religions. Garang spent much of the conflict among the poorest residents, preaching hope, while traversing Africa seeking peace and protection for southern Sudan. He also brought the realities of the war to the international community, traveling to Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.  He was consecrated the bishop of Bor in …
