According to Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), he perched on one of his preferred trees over Big Bear Lake for about 45 minutes. One banded nearly mature eagle joined him for a moment, but Shadow did not appear to be in the mood for company. He left the perch in less than 30 seconds, before that visitor flew in the same direction. The red-footed booby (Sula sula) was spotted off Thomas Point Park in Anne Arundel County, hundreds of miles away from its usual haunt in the tropics. “It was only the second red-footed booby officially recorded in the state,” Steve Sheffield, a field biologist at the University of Maryland and president of the Maryland Ornithological Society, tells Popular Science. “The range for the red-footeds is extensive. As soon as a dying star’s core collapses, the energy waves begin traveling outward until they rip through the surface in an X-ray burst known as a “shock breakout.” This burst produces the first detectable light from a supernova, but it doesn’t last long. In some of these new images, the cresting vortices that dot the sun are barely 12 miles wide. To put the achievement into perspective, the feat is like trying to discern George Washington’s face on a quarter from roughly 74 miles away.
