Keir Starmer's Time In Downing Street Is Coming To An End – But Who Comes Next?

Keir Starmer’s rivals are circling Keir Starmer has insisted he “won’t walk away” from Downing Street, but it soon won’t be his decision to make. A Labour leadership contest is coming, after which the prime minister will be forced out of No.10. If there was any doubt at all, then they will be extinguished next Thursday, when HuffPost UK understand the next tranche of Peter Mandelson documents will be released. They will not reflect well on Starmer. The only questions that remain are when he will walk out of the famous black door for the final time as PM, and who his replacement will be. For now, the PM and his allies remain defiant – although the radio silence from Starmer himself in recent days speaks to the turmoil which is engulfing him and the entire Downing Street operation. Instead, it has been up to loyal Starmer lieutenants like communities secretary Steve Reed to go out and defend the leader.  “Keir Starmer is the elected leader of the Labour Party and the elected prime minister …

(Hannah McKay/Pool Photo via AP) Keir Starmer’s premiership is hanging by a thread following Labour’s disastrous performance in the local elections. A growing body of MPs are calling for the prime minister to resign, less than two years into the role, but Starmer is digging in. With no clear successor putting their head above the parapet for the mutinous party to rally behind, MPs are in limbo.  So what might happen next? Here’s what you need to know. How Did We Get To This Point? Starmer became prime minister in July 2024 after Labour won a landslide victory in the general election. But within weeks, his government was plunged into crisis by the decision to scrap winter fuel payments for 10 million pensioners and a row over free clothes and hospitality accepted by Starmer and other senior Labour figures. A series of messy U-turns on things like the …

3 Moments Which Suggest Labour MPs Are Panicking Amid Starmer's Uncertain Future

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks as Starmer hosts social media industry leaders to discuss child safety online Thursday, April 16, 2026, in London.  Labour MPs can’t decide if Keir Starmer is coming or going even as his premiership hangs in the balance. Despite the party’s horrendous performance in the local elections, the prime minister has made it clear he has no intention of stepping down. That means it is up to the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) to try and unite behind an alternative candidate to oust the PM. But MPs cannot decide what course of action they want to take, and so the party seems to be falling apart – in public. 1. ‘Wholly Unserious’ Backbencher Catherine West threatened to pose a leadership challenge to Starmer if she got the required backing of 20% of the parliamentary party. However, after Starmer’s make-or-break speech on Monday, West changed tactics and sent a letter to fellow Labour MPs. She asked them to back her letter calling on the PM to step down in September. Fellow Labour MP …

Labour's Deputy Leader Dodges Question About Starmer's Future

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Lucy Powell Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Labour’s deputy leader Lucy Powell has refused to say if she thinks Keir Starmer should continue as prime minister. The party are expected to endure heavy losses in England’s local elections on Thursday after a gruelling two years in office. Labour are also likely to lose control of the devolved Welsh government for the first time since devolution was introduced 30 years ago, and unlikely to beat the SNP in Scotland. Pressure is mounting on Starmer to take the fall for the anticipated bloodbath, though the PM has insisted he will not be stepping down any time soon. Even so, reports continue to suggest that his rivals – former deputy PM Angela Rayner, health secretary Wes Streeting and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham – are preparing to challenge him for No.10. Powell, who was sacked as the Commons leader by Starmer last year, refused to give the PM clear backing in an interview on Sunday. While sending a message to unhappy Labour …

Labour Peer Becomes Most Senior Person In Party To Call For Starmer's Resignation

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks during a press conference at Downing Street in London, Wednesday, April 1, 2026. A Labour peer has called for Keir Starmer to resign over the Peter Mandelson scandal. Maurice Glasman has become the most senior figure within the party to urge the prime minister to resign, claiming he “cannot conceivably continue” in the job. It comes after it emerged Mandelson – Starmer’s pick to be the UK’s ambassador to the US – failed security vetting last year. The Foreign Office then overrode the security advice not to hire the ex-Labour peer and gave Mandelson the plum job in Washington. Mandelson was sacked over his long-running friendship with convicted paedophile last September, but the decision to hire him continues to haunt Starmer. The PM insists he was not aware Mandelson failed the vetting process and is blaming Whitehall for keeping him in the dark. But questions over Starmer’s judgement continue to grow and there is speculation other Labour figures – Angela Rayner and Andy Burnham – could be looking to …
