How do you stay cool in Egypt with temps of 106? : NPR

My dad, who lives in Cairo, told me the heat this summer has been punishing. I asked how hot it was. He said 39 degrees. “What’s that in Fahrenheit?” I wondered. He said “Hot!” I looked it up. It’s 102. And next week’s forecast: a high of 106. In the ’90s, when I was in elementary school, I’d spend my summers with my dad. Back then, air conditioners weren’t as ubiquitous as they are now. It was hot, but I coped. In this age of extreme heat, i wonder: How are Egyptians getting by? Malaka Gharib/NPR hide caption toggle caption Sponsor Message Source link

Pressed on the decision to re-appoint Mr Alexander to the job despite their historically bad relationship, the First Minister added: “The Prime Minister’s got to make his choices about his own team, but what he said to me is that he wants to have a constructive and positive relationship with the Scottish Government and that’s what I’ll pursue.” Source link

Trump Endorses Graham’s Sister For Full Term, Shattering Expectations Of Short Stay

Trump Endorses Graham’s Sister For Full Term, Shattering Expectations Of Short Stay

Following the sudden July 11 death of Senator Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster triggered eye-rolling across America when he appointed Graham’s sister Darline Nordone to take over the seat. At the time, the appointment of the unqualified sibling was widely understood as a mere interim honor, with Nordone serving as a placeholder pending the outcome of a special primary election to choose a Republican candidate for November’s previously-scheduled election for the seat. Now, President Trump has asked Nordone to run in that primary race and pursue the full 6-year term that will start in January.  “During her visit, I asked Darline, for the Good of our Nation, to run for the U.S. Senate in the Special Republican Primary on Tuesday, August 11, 2026,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I hope Darline does this, in that there would be nobody better to honor the legacy of her beloved brother, Lindsey. Darline…comes from an absolutely incredible family [and] has been a WINNER all of her life…RUN, DARLINE, RUN!”  While Nordone herself hasn’t announced that intention, there are …

How to wash your fruits and vegetables to stay safe from diarrhea-causing parasite cyclosporiasis

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Cases of a diarrhea-causing parasitic infection are rapidly rising across the U.S., forcing warnings from experts about food safety. Cyclosporiasis is typically spread by exposure to contaminated produce and public health officials believe some of the 7,000 cases nationwide were tied to lettuce. The best way to stay safe is to avoid foods linked to an outbreak, or heat food to 158 degrees Fahrenheit which kills the cyclospora parasite. Vigorously and carefully washing food can also help reduce the risk. However, some foods are easier to wash than others and how you do so matters. “While washing alone may not fully eliminate cyclospora, it enhances protection when combined with cooking or peeling,” Michigan’s health department states. Wildfire Smoke Makes Air Unhealthy From the US Midwest to East Coast. Officials Say Stay Inside

Wildfire Smoke Makes Air Unhealthy From the US Midwest to East Coast. Officials Say Stay Inside

NEW YORK (AP) — Heavy, pungent wildfire smoke darkened skies in the U.S. on Thursday from the Great Lakes to parts of the East Coast, reducing visibility and prompting warnings that breathing the air outside could be dangerous. Officials in many cities urged residents to stay inside or wear masks outside as air quality reached unhealthy to hazardous levels, meaning it’s unhealthy for anyone, regardless of health conditions. The smoke is coming from fires that are burning primarily in Canada but also in northern Minnesota. A lingering high pressure system has trapped the smoke close to the ground, said Steven Freitag, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Detroit, where air quality was among the worst in the world for major cities. “Sure enough, it arrived in force here and it’s really pretty extreme levels,” said Freitag, who noted that visibility in some areas was reduced to a half mile. “It’s scary,” Omar Mitchell, 50, said as he looked to the sky. He wore a mask while walking to his restaurant in Detroit. “You don’t know …

Wildfire smoke health risks: Symptoms, who’s at risk and how to stay safe

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore I woke up today seeing that my windows appeared to have an yellow/orange tint to them, signalling that wildfire smoke was upon my city and reminding us that climate-related hazards are increasingly becoming visible parts of our daily lives. I’m a family physician, public health physician and medical educator. My work and research in space medicine has also given me a unique appreciation for planetary environments, and as I looked out at the orange haze, I could not help but reflect on how this view resembles the dust-filled skies astronauts will one day encounter when viewing the Martian landscape. The current wildfires in Northern Ontario are impacting not just surrounding regions but a large swath of eastern North America, with wildfire smoke travelling far beyond the immediate fire zone and affecting communities hundreds of kilometres away. Smart People Don’t Usually Talk About 8 Things That Everyone Else Can’t Stay Quiet About

Smart People Don’t Usually Talk About 8 Things That Everyone Else Can’t Stay Quiet About

There’s a universal list of taboo topics that most people know aren’t welcome at the dinner table, and that list seems to get longer by the day. And yet, it also seems that pretty much nobody abides by those same guidelines. For far too many people, quite literally everything is on the table. Only people who are seriously intelligent avoid this type of conversation if they can help it. They rarely talk about things everyone else can’t seem to keep quiet about because they are very much aware that doing so can make them look bad, and certain topics shouldn’t be discussed for a reason. Others may raise these topics just because they want to stir the pot, but if you’re smart, you definitely know better. People who are seriously smart will rarely talk about these things that pretty much everyone else can’t stop themselves from discussing 1. Japan manufacturers stay upbeat on chip demand, services hit by costs

TOKYO, July 15 : Japanese manufacturers’ sentiment remained relatively upbeat in July, supported by solid semiconductor demand, while confidence among non-manufacturers fell as the Middle East conflict, a weak yen and rising interest rates pushed up costs, the latest Reuters Tankan survey showed. The monthly poll, a leading indicator of the Bank of Japan’s quarterly Tankan business survey, showed that the manufacturers’ sentiment index was unchanged at plus-13 in July from June. Manufacturers reported a recovery in the semiconductor market, including in memory-related demand, as well as rapidly expanding orders for products used in chip applications and AI servers. Orders for electronic components were also rising broadly. “Order volumes and values are at levels we’ve never seen before, and we’re concerned about production capacity,” a manager at a precision machinery maker said. The July survey, conducted from July 1 to July 10, received responses from 218 out of 511 firms polled. The indexes are calculated by subtracting the percentage of pessimistic responses from the percentage of optimistic ones, with positive figures indicating net optimism. The …

Cream of Wheat is going viral as grocery prices stay high

Cream of Wheat is going viral as grocery prices stay high

One of the internet’s biggest food trends right now comes from a box that’s been around for generations and costs less than a cup of coffee in New York City. Cream of Wheat is suddenly all over TikTok, where users are posting recipes, taste tests, mukbangs (eating a large amount of food on camera), and carefully customized bowls of the hot cereal. Among the trend’s most visible creators is Rachel, who posts under @vintagegingerrr and has built a following of more than 112,000 with comfort-focused food content that frequently features Cream of Wheat. SEE ALSO: GLP-1s are inescapable online. Here’s why that’s a problem. She is far from the only creator giving the old-school breakfast new attention. User Queen of Wheat has been posting viral Cream of Wheat mukbangs since 2025, while other users have joined in with their own versions, debates over the best consistency, and first-time reactions to a cereal many had previously overlooked. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. For the uninitiated, Cream of Wheat …
