Jupiter’s jet streams dive into extreme atmospheric regions

Jupiter’s jet streams dive into extreme atmospheric regions

Jupiter does not sit still. Its atmosphere races around the planet in more than 20 east-west jet streams, with winds reaching about 100 meters per second, more than three times faster than the strongest jet stream on Earth. Those bands of motion, visible in the planet’s bright stripes and turbulent storms, have been watched for centuries. But only recently have scientists begun to pin down how far those winds reach and what keeps them going inside the solar system’s largest planet. That question matters because Jupiter is not just a bigger Earth. It has no solid surface, rotates in about 10 hours, and is made mostly of a relatively uniform mix of gases. In some ways that makes it simpler to study. In other ways, it makes the planet harder to understand, because the atmosphere blends into the deep interior. Recent measurements and computer models now point to a picture that is both clearer and stranger. Jupiter’s jet streams do not stay near the cloud tops. They plunge thousands of kilometers downward, into regions where …

I set up a $190 mesh Wi-Fi system at home, and it handled a dozen 4K video streams with ease

Tenda BE5100 3-Pack Mesh Wi-Fi System pros and cons Pros Makes mesh Wi-Fi easy to set up App offers pro-grade features, such as diagnostics Excellent hardware with Wi-Fi 7 support for a fraction of the price of some systems. Cons Units feel a bit cheap and “plasticky.” Spare satellite units retail for $100 each. Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. There’s nothing more frustrating than sitting on your couch or at your desk and noticing a limited Wi-Fi signal. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seen with my phone in my outstretched arm, doing something that looks like a weird yoga pose, trying to get a better signal.  Also: I set up a $4 router reboot timer, and it’s made my internet reliably faster Back in the day, the solution I’d fan back onto would be to set up a repeater or hook up another Wi-Fi router to spread the signal. Not a great solution because it didn’t allow for a smooth handover between the different routers. I also dabbled with Wi-Fi …

Human-built ‘beaver’ dams help save struggling streams

Human-built ‘beaver’ dams help save struggling streams

One warm morning in the summer of 2025, the Beaver Brigade marched into Bernheim Forest. This woodland spans more than 16,000 acres (6,475 hectares) in north-central Kentucky. Every other month, volunteer brigade members hike in to make it more beaver-friendly. Beavers are nature’s engineers, notes Evan Patrick. A brigade member, he helps manage the forest. Beavers build dams across streams to create small, protected ponds. The large rodents also build their homes, called lodges, in those ponds. Beaver dams and their ponds shape how water moves through a landscape. They also help keep streams healthy. The Beaver Brigade wants to help these animals out. Sometimes they count beavers to see how many are around. Sometimes they plant shrubs or trees the critters eat or use as building materials. Sometimes they scout for new dams or signs of new lodges. Beavers build their homes, called lodges, in the ponds that form behind dams. A beaver lodge usually has a secret entrance under the water, which can’t be reached by predators.John Wirta/iStock/Getty Images Plus That morning, though, …

I changed 3 settings in Plex and my streams immediately stopped buffering

I changed 3 settings in Plex and my streams immediately stopped buffering

In the past, I’ve sat down to watch something on Plex, only to be met with endless buffering — and it turns out I’m not alone. A quick check on Reddit revealed scores of posts dating back years seeking help with this very issue. It’s especially annoying, as streaming apps are supposed to “just work” straight out of the box with minimal tweaking, regardless of the device or network conditions (although a few handy setup tips never hurt). However, as I found out, this lies at the root of the problem. It turns out that, by default, my Plex server seemed overly cautious by lowering quality, forcing unnecessary transcoding, or using safe network settings, so while my hardware was perfectly capable and my internet was fast enough, my streams still stuttered. Thankfully, with a few small tweaks to the settings, I saw an immediate difference, with smoother playback, faster start times, and no buffering. OS MacOS, Linux, Windows, iOS, Android Plex is a powerful media management and streaming service that centralizes your personal media—like movies, …

Man Pleads Guilty to Making Million by Creating Music With AI and Using Bots to Drive Zillions of Fake Streams

Man Pleads Guilty to Making $8 Million by Creating Music With AI and Using Bots to Drive Zillions of Fake Streams

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech For quite some time now, human musicians have watched in horror as AI-generated slop has started drowning out their work on streaming platforms. Companies like Spotify have discovered entire networks of bots that were designed to fraudulently boost the listenership of AI-generated music, a bizarre scheme essentially involving bots listening to bot music to capture royalties that could’ve otherwise been paid out to real human artists. The problem has been around for years — but prosecutors are finally catching onto the dubious scheme and putting those running the bot farms to justice. In a Department of Justice press release, the Southern District of New York attorney Jay Clayton announced that North Carolina native Michael Smith had plead guilty for creating “hundreds of thousands of songs with AI” and using “automated programs called ‘bots’ to fraudulently stream his AI-generated songs billions of times.” The goal was to “mimic the genuine streaming activity of real consumers,” ultimately allowing him to …

Report finds 89% of UK illegal sports streams deliver black market gambling ads

Report finds 89% of UK illegal sports streams deliver black market gambling ads

Behind 89% of illegal stream views on sports in Great Britain during 2024 and the first half of 2025 were malware, spyware, keystroke loggers, and other ID and data theft mechanics aimed at producing content for crime from the audience, according to a new report. The insight comes from the Campaign for Fairer Gambling (CFG) which has released its CFG GB National 2024 and 2025 First Half Illegal Streaming of Sports Events and Illegal Gambling research. Within it, they say: “Where this connects to online gaming is clear: 89% of illegal streaming of sports events content in Great Britain across 2024 and 2025 first half carried advertising for illegal and unlicensed gambling. It is by far the largest and most prevalent “media partner” to the criminal business of illegal streaming of sports events.” They suggest that for the criminals behind illegal streaming, media platforms are the prey and the audience are the product. The people behind the campaign warn that the online gaming marketplace in Great Britain could face an explosive “fire-meets-gasoline potential” as changes …

Separating and concentrating the most challenging industrial streams

Separating and concentrating the most challenging industrial streams

Helios Innovations’ technology is proven to separate and concentrate PFAS from extremely contaminated industrial waste streams, including AFFF above 20 million ng/L. PFAS contamination is discussed widely today, particularly in the context of drinking water, groundwater protection, wastewater treatment, and human exposure. However, the streams that receive most public attention are not the ones where the technical bottleneck exists. PFAS found in municipal water, surface water, or leachate are typically present at concentrations in the range of 100–15,000 ng/L. These levels are difficult from a regulatory and health perspective, but they are not what challenge the limits of available technology. Industrial PFAS streams are fundamentally different. They originate from firefighting foams, discharge testing of fixed fire suppression systems, emergency response operations, extinguishers, and process waste handled in industry and defence. These streams do not contain trace levels of PFAS contamination. Instead, they can reach levels of millions to tens of millions of nanograms per litre. In many cases, discarded aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) contains two factors: very high PFAS concentrations and surfactant-driven foam behaviour that …
