Just months after arriving at dealerships, Subaru’s new electric SUVs are outselling the Solterra. The Uncharted is now Subaru’s most popular and most affordable EV in the US. The automaker has brought a 204-kilowatt rooftop solar system online atop a new expansion at its Lafayette factory. The system went into service in August 2025 and is now generating electricity for Subaru’s operations. Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) is the company’s only vehicle assembly plant outside Japan. It builds the gas-powered Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester models for the North American market. Subaru’s all-electric Solterra is built in Japan. The new solar array generates more than three times the electricity currently consumed by the plant’s expansion. That means it produces a net surplus of clean energy, which Subaru uses elsewhere at the plant, helping cut energy costs while shrinking its carbon footprint.
