‘Substantial evidence’ of double-tap strike in killing of Gaza’s Hind Rajab | Israel-Palestine conflict News

In the final hours of her life on January 29, 2024, Hind Rajab’s feeble voice could be heard desperately pleading with her mother and emergency workers for help, as she was trapped in a car surrounded by the bodies of six of her relatives. After finally getting clearance from the Israeli military in Gaza City, a Red Crescent ambulance raced to save the five-year-old girl. But two paramedics were killed when their marked vehicle – whose sirens were blaring – came under Israeli tank fire. The remains of the nine victims were recovered 12 days later. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list Two years after the tragedy, a report claims this was a “double tap” attack by the Israeli army. A double-tap strike essentially means carrying out two strikes on the same target, often wounding or killing medics and civilians who are coming to the aid of people harmed in the first attack. Analysis by the global campaign group Avaaz has found evidence that the killings contravened international combat law under the Geneva Conventions …

£100m English hubs had ‘substantial’ impact, researchers say

Evaluation finds school-led scheme boosted pupils’ outcomes and ‘broader literacy’ Evaluation finds school-led scheme boosted pupils’ outcomes and ‘broader literacy’ More from this theme Recent articles A £100 million scheme supporting children who are struggling to read has boosted pupils’ outcomes and “broader literacy”, researchers have said.    A government-commissioned report, published last month, found the English hubs programme (EHP) has had a “substantial” impact, with more six-year-olds meeting the expected standard in the phonics screening check. Gap narrowed Launched in 2018, the EHP aims to boost phonics teaching, early language and reading for pleasure, particularly for those making the slowest progress.  Each of the 34 hub lead schools was selected for its expertise in teaching early reading. The evaluation assessed the support provided at selected primaries with high levels of disadvantage and a low proportion of pupils meeting the expected standard in the phonics screening check.  The researchers said the two- to three-year course of “bespoke intensive support” is the programme’s main focus.  They found this increased the proportion of year 1 children meeting …

GOP senators vow “substantial opposition” against Trump using military force in Greenland

Senate Republicans have vowed to push back against any attempt made by President Donald Trump to seize Greenland by military force, as diplomatic talks stall between the U.S. and Denmark. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., is part of a congressional delegation that will travel to speak with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Friday to assure her that Trump can expect “substantial opposition” from Republicans if he tries to use force in Greenland. “I’m going to remind them that we have coequal branches of government and I believe that there [is a] sufficient number of members, whether they speak up or not, that are concerned with this,” Tillis told The Hill. “Right now, people are trying to be deferential, but this is just an example of, whoever keeps on telling the president that this idea is achievable should not be in Washington, D.C.,” Tillis said. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., joined Tillis in his hard stance on Trump’s would-be war. McConnell, the chair of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, said using military force would “incinerate” ties with …

Guantanamo Bay detainee to get ‘substantial’ sum from UK government – as Badenoch criticises use of taxpayers’ money | UK News

A Guantanamo Bay detainee will be paid a “substantial” sum as he settles a legal claim against the UK government, his lawyers have said, as Kemi Badenoch said UK taxpayers’ cash was being handed to a “terror suspect”. Abu Zubaydah, 54, has been detained by US authorities since his capture in Pakistan 2002 in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks, and in 2006 was sent to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba where he has remained ever since. Mr Zubaydah, a Palestinian born in Saudi Arabia, who was accused at the time of being a high-ranking member of al Qaeda, is said to have been tortured by the CIA, including by being waterboarded 83 times in a month, and facing beatings and extreme sleep deprivation. He brought legal action against the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Home Office, as agencies liable for MI6 and MI5, as well as the attorney general. The High Court previously heard Mr Zubaydah claimed he was “arbitrarily detained” at CIA-run “black site” prisons in Thailand, Poland, Morocco, Lithuania and …
