NotebookLM’s audio overviews turned my research paper backlog into actually useful summaries

NotebookLM’s audio overviews turned my research paper backlog into actually useful summaries

When you’re in academia, reading research papers is part of everyday life — at least it is supposed to be. You may be working on a paper or thesis and want to do a thorough literature review. Or you may just want to catch up with your area of interest. These scholarly works are written for specialists, with dense language that makes regular reading a challenge even when the topic is familiar. Yet, there’s a bigger, more common problem. Related I hooked Obsidian to a local LLM and it beats NotebookLM at its own game My notes now talk back and it’s terrifyingly useful. I was saving papers more than I was understanding them My “read later” system was doing all the reading I’m sure most people working in academia have either a messy Google Drive folder with hundreds of papers or a Zotero library that feels vaguely familiar after a few months. Every time you come across something you think you love, you download the paper or add it to Zotero or Mendeley. But …

I turned on notification summaries on my Pixel 9 Pro, and it was less chaotic than expected

I turned on notification summaries on my Pixel 9 Pro, and it was less chaotic than expected

Jack Wallen / Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways Some newer Pixel phones have a secret notification weapon. This feature gives you a quick overview of longer messages. These summaries are displayed on your Pixel lock screen. Google is always trying to make Android a more user-friendly and efficient mobile OS. With the advent of AI, some features can be simplified in ways that would not have been possible without the help of local LLMs. One such feature is the new Android notification summaries. This feature aims to summarize longer messages from popular messaging apps (such as Google Messages) and present the summaries on your lock screen (not when you’re using your phone). There are a couple of caveats to this. First, because the summarization happens on-device, the power required excludes the Pixel 9a, which leaves the 9, 9 Pro, 10, and 10 Pro. That’s not a long list of devices, but it’s very possible the feature will eventually trickle down to other …

I tested Google Docs’ new AI audio summaries, and they’re a massive time-saver

I tested Google Docs’ new AI audio summaries, and they’re a massive time-saver

Screenshot by Lance Whitney/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. I work with a lot of documents in Google Docs, and I often ask the built-in Gemini AI to summarize a specific document for me. The text-based summary is typically short and concise, so it’s easy enough to read. But sometimes I’d just like to sit back and listen to a summary read aloud to me. With a new skill in Google Docs, I can do just that. The “Listen to document summary” feature taps into Gemini to generate a summary of your current document and then read it to you. With a floating and moveable mini player, you can pause and restart the reading, increase or decrease the playback speed, and switch among different voices. I find this to be a time saver as I can listen to the summary while doing other things or just while relaxing. “Audio summaries provide a short verbal synopsis of the contents in your document, including multiple tabs,” Google said in a Feb. 12 blog post …

Adobe Acrobat now lets you edit files using prompts, generate podcast summaries

Adobe Acrobat now lets you edit files using prompts, generate podcast summaries

Adobe has been aggressively adding AI features to all its products in the last few years. The company is now adding more AI tools to Acrobat, including the ability to generate podcast summaries of files, create presentations, and a way for users to edit files using prompts. The company launched Adobe Spaces last year, which is a collection of files and notes that multiple users can access. Now, Adobe is allowing users to use the information stored in these files and notes to create a presentation using text prompts. For instance, if a user has financial details, product plans, and competitor analysis available in a Space, they can build a pitch deck for clients that focuses on why their product can solve problems better than rivals. Acrobat’s AI assistant first generates an editable presentation with points that the deck would cover. You can then use Adobe Express’s theme library, stock photos, or use your own images to build the presentation. Plus, you can easily apply your brand’s theme or edit individual slides using Express. Learning from AI summaries leads to shallower knowledge than web search

Learning from AI summaries leads to shallower knowledge than web search

Results of a set of experiments found that individuals learning about a topic from large language model summaries develop shallower knowledge compared to when they learn through standard web search. Individuals who learned from large language models felt less invested in forming their advice, and created advice that was sparser and less original compared to advice based on learning through web search. The research was published in PNAS Nexus. Large language models (LLMs) are artificial intelligence systems designed to interpret and generate human language by learning statistical patterns from vast collections of text. They are typically based on deep learning architectures, which allow them to process context and relationships between words over long passages. The most popular large language models today include those developed by OpenAI (GPT series used in ChatGPT), Google (Gemini), Anthropic (Claude), and Meta (LLaMA). The development of large language models has progressed rapidly over the last decade due to advances in computing power, the availability of large datasets, and improvements in training algorithms. Early models focused mainly on simple text prediction, …
