Luca Guadagnino Says He’s Not Surprised Amazon Dropped His OpenAI Film

Luca Guadagnino Says He’s Not Surprised Amazon Dropped His OpenAI Film

Luca Guadagnino says it wasn’t surprising Amazon MGM dropped his nearly-finished Sam Altman movie Artificial shortly after Amazon announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI. “I can’t say much because we are right in the middle of this situation,” Guadagnino told Italian television, “[but] these are industrial policies that are certainly not new.” Speaking to news show Otto e mezzo on Italian network La7, Guadagnino cited an incident from 2003 when CBS canceled the broadcast of The Regans, a miniseries about President Ronald Regan and his family, starring Josh Brolin and Judy Davis, following a conservative backlash. (The series eventually aired on CBS’s sister network Showtime.) The Italian director could have mentioned a more recent example, Ali Abbasi’s 2024 Donald Trump movie The Apprentice, which premiered to acclaim in Cannes but was blackballed by studio and independent distributors, before finally landing with Tom Ortenberg’s indie outfit Briarcliff Entertainment. Neither of those, however, is a direct comp to the Artificial situation. Amazon pulled out of Guadagnino’s film shortly after announcing its $50 billion strategic partnership with …

Why I’m not surprised King Charles will never live at Buckingham Palace

Why I’m not surprised King Charles will never live at Buckingham Palace

The occasional day working from home has become one of the few perks to emerge from the lockdown years. In fact, I’m writing this from my desk in the spare room, after a hectic week of royal events in a heatwave, grateful for the chance to be in my own space. But what if the home you also work from is one of the UK’s biggest tourist attractions? A place that attracts 700,000 visitors a year, where state visits, garden parties and receptions take place, where staff and security teams are constantly coming and going, and where the cameras are never far away. That’s the reality of Buckingham Palace. So when officials announced this week that the King and Queen will never make it their permanent home, I wasn’t surprised. In fact, having spent years reporting from BP – as staff know it – it strikes me as entirely understandable. For all its grandeur, the Palace has always felt more like a workplace than a home. It’s the operational heart of the monarchy, hosting everything …

I plugged my Galaxy into a monitor after One UI 8.5, and DeX surprised me

I plugged my Galaxy into a monitor after One UI 8.5, and DeX surprised me

I used to treat Samsung DeX as a neat party trick. I’d mostly use it to show my vacation photos and videos, or occasionally impress friends by turning my Galaxy phone into a desktop when connected to a smart TV or monitor. Aside from this, there wasn’t any particular reason to use Samsung DeX. But recently, after updating my phone with the latest One UI 8.5 update, I could literally see how much DeX has changed from a mere feature into a productivity powerhouse. Related 7 Clever Ways to Use a Monitor Without a Computer You don’t need a computer to use your monitor. Old DeX was just a feature Plug in, rearrange everything, repeat Tashreef Shareef / MakeUseOfCredit: Tashreef Shareef / MakeUseOf Before the One UI 8.5 update, Samsung DeX felt like just another fancy feature. While it did provide a mobile desktop setup, anywhere, anytime, it wasn’t truly a complete desktop experience. Every time I launched DeX, it forgot what I’d done last session — no remembered apps, no remembered window sizes. I had …

After Quitting Her Job, Woman Was Surprised By How Differently Boomers & Gen-Z Responded

After Quitting Her Job, Woman Was Surprised By How Differently Boomers & Gen-Z Responded

The decision to quit a job that is no longer serving you can be a daunting choice, especially with a myriad of factors to consider. However, in a TikTok video, a content creator named Samantha Shea explained that after quitting her job, she noticed that the reactions she got were contradictory depending on the age of the person she was speaking to. She explained the differing reactions from both Baby Boomers and Gen-Zers after quitting her job In Shea’s video, she admitted that after recently quitting her job, whenever she brings up the fact that she is no longer employed with Boomers versus Gen-Zers, their reactions are always starkly different. “The difference between generations is every time I tell someone who’s over the age of 40 that I left my job, they’re like, ‘Oh my God, what are you gonna do? You don’t have a job lined up. Aren’t you nervous? Don’t you have to pay rent?’” Shea said. RELATED: 3 Emotional Signs You’ve Already Quit Your Job — Even If You’ve Haven’t Told Your Boss Yet …

This hidden FaceTime feature is incredibly useful – and surprised my own family

Live Voicemail lets you leave audio messages from FaceTime audio. Missed FaceTime messages appear in the recipient’s call history. My editor told me the other day that she had spent the weekend showing two people how to use an apparently little-known FaceTime feature: video messages. That got me wondering whether my husband or my parents knew how to leave one when someone doesn’t answer a FaceTime video call. Spoiler alert: They didn’t, so I showed them how it works. Also: Your iPhone RCS chats with Android are encrypted in iOS 26.5: How to verify E2E is enabled It’s basically voicemail, but with video and only for FaceTime users. If you use FaceTime audio, there’s a related feature called Live Voicemail. Confused yet? Don’t worry. My family was, too, at first. Here’s how to use both. I was at Tommy Robinson rally Unite the Kingdom – 1 thing surprised me | UK | News

This was the first time I have reported from a protest organised by Robinson, the far-right activist who founded the English Defence League (EDL) back in 2009. There are many stereotypes around his supporters – and some of these I observed at the rally – but, as I stood on Kingsway looking to speak to those taking part, I was surprised by the number of people who did not fit into those preconceptions. This included a 43-year-old Polish man, who has been living in the UK for more than 20 years, and his 36-year-old partner from Ghana. Robinson said the demonstration was about “national unity, free speech and Christian values”. Many protesters who spoke to me mentioned free speech as a particularly big issue, as well as illegal immigration and grooming gangs. Throughout the protest there was an almost constant hum of “Keir Starmer is a w*****” chants — a sentiment also replicated on some t-shirts, placards and flags. Shouts of “we want Starmer out” could also be heard. In many ways, it felt as …

Lady Gaga Surprised Her Little Monsters With a Pop-Music Funeral at The Grove

Lady Gaga Surprised Her Little Monsters With a Pop-Music Funeral at The Grove

After the procession ended, invitees were shuttled into multiple theaters. Each seat was topped with a Mayhem-inspired zine, designed by Rose Zhang, a senior art director at Apple Music. “The art direction of the campaign followed the Gothic tone of her stage design,” says Zhang. “This quote from Lady Gaga really inspired me: ‘What if we were to lock the set away after we were done with the last show, and over hundreds of years, it fell apart, and some little monster from the future found it—or made an art piece out of it?’” A few minutes later, a woman came into the theater and yelled, “Everyone take their seats”—interrupting the Little Monsters, mostly dressed in all black, who were conducting photoshoots in front of the black screen displaying Zhang’s art. And then Lady Gaga herself unexpectedly came in to introduce the movie. “What if we tore the album down and we completely put it back together and reimagined the music in a new way,” Gaga said to the crowd in a hushed, shy register. …

I tried 4 lightweight Linux distros on a 4GB laptop, and one surprised me

I tried 4 lightweight Linux distros on a 4GB laptop, and one surprised me

As time progresses, so does the advancement of technology. More so in the personal computing space, which has seen a massive shift in recent years. We’re seeing wildly powerful (and efficient!) computers, but that power has also left older hardware entirely in the dust. Despite being older, much of this hardware is more than capable of handling basic day-to-day tasks, but the gap is starting to widen. Ordinarily, most of these older machines cannot run modern operating systems such as Windows 11 and macOS Tahoe reliably (if at all), which makes us turn toward Linux as our savior once again. While Linux has always been a bit friendlier toward lower-end hardware, you really can’t address physical limitations entirely. In my case, it was an old MacBook Air (11-inch, 2012) with a measly 4GB of system RAM. Most mainstream distributions are a complete no-go with just 4GB of RAM, but thankfully, we do still have a few options. These specialized distros cater to lower-end systems, and I went through three before ultimately picking a winner. Related …

Apple was surprised by AI-driven demand for Macs

Apple was surprised by AI-driven demand for Macs

Apple’s iPhone sales and Services revenue were the stars of the show in the tech giant’s most recent quarter, but the Mac quietly outperformed — helped by growing demand for AI workloads. Wall Street investors had expected to see Mac revenue in the low $8 billion range, but Apple reported $8.4 billion in the second quarter ended March 28 — a notable beat for a non-core segment of the tech giant’s business. In addition, investors ahead of earnings believed that Mac sales would be essentially flat year-over-year. Instead, Mac sales were up 6% on an annual basis, the company told investors. The company’s total revenue was $111.2 billion, a 17% increase from the same period last year. Apple chalked up some of the Mac growth to recent product launches, including the well-received MacBook Neo. However, those fun, colorful computers were only on sale for a few weeks after the March 4 preorders began. Realistically, most units shipped mid- to late March, and some demand may have been pushed into April as certain models sold out. …
