Swiatek retires from Madrid Open due to illness

April 25 : Six-times Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek retired from her Madrid Open round-of-32 match against American Ann Li on Saturday due to illness, trailing 6-7(4) 6-2 0-3. The fourth seed at the WTA 1000 clay-court tournament left the court in tears, having called for medical assistance during the match. “The past two days were pretty terrible, I think I have some virus,” said Swiatek, who won the Madrid title in 2024. “It’s been some hours fine, some hours pretty bad. I had zero energy, zero stability, and I just felt really bad physically. “I knew that (it was) going to be hard but I still wanted to try because I already have been sick twice in my career and I could still win most of my matches. I guess it depends on how bad it is, and I guess this time it was worse than before.” Swiatek’s withdrawal deals a blow to her preparations for the French Open, a tournament the Pole has dominated in recent years, winning the title four times, most recently …

Swiatek splits with coach Fissette after Miami Open upset

March 23 : World number three Iga Swiatek has ended her coaching partnership with Wim Fissette, she said on Monday, following a disappointing start to the season that culminated in a shock early exit at the Miami Open. The 24-year-old, who hired the Belgian in October 2024, said she had decided to take a different path after a 17-month stint that included her maiden Wimbledon title last year. However, Thursday’s loss to world number 50 and Polish compatriot Magda Linette at the Miami Open proved a turning point for the six-times Grand Slam winner. “Miami was challenging for me. I feel disappointment, bitterness and responsibility for my performance on the court,” Swiatek wrote in a social media post. “I’m grateful for (Fissette’s) support, experience, and everything we achieved together—including one of my biggest dreams in sport.” Under Fissette’s guidance, Swiatek adapted her game to faster surfaces, winning titles in Cincinnati and Seoul in addition to her 2025 triumph on the London grass. Fissette, who has previously coached major champions including Kim Clijsters and Naomi Osaka, …

‘Are we animals in the zoo?’: Swiatek calls for player privacy at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Jan 28 : World number two Iga Swiatek joined a growing chorus of players demanding more privacy off the courts at the Australian Open after cameras captured Coco Gauff in a post-match meltdown that the American said should have been a personal moment. The incident occurred after Gauff’s 59-minute quarter-final defeat by Elina Svitolina, when the American retreated behind a wall near the match call area deep in the bowels of the stadium to repeatedly smash her racquet on the ground. Unbeknownst to the third seed, cameras recorded her every move and the video was broadcast to viewers around the world, with Gauff saying she was unhappy that there was no privacy anywhere except the locker room. “The question is, are we tennis players or are we animals in the zoo, where they are observed even when they poop?” Swiatek told reporters after she lost 7-5 6-1 to Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. “Okay, that was exaggerating obviously, but it would be nice to have some privacy. It would be nice also …

Swiatek sees off Bouzkova to reach Australian Open third round

MELBOURNE, Jan 22 : Iga Swiatek resumed her quest for a first Australian Open title and career Grand Slam with a 6-2 6-3 victory over unseeded Marie Bouzkova to reach the third round on Thursday, as she showed no signs of the sluggishness that dogged her in the previous round. The 24-year-old arrived in Melbourne after two losses during Poland’s triumphant United Cup run and had to fight past Chinese qualifier Yuan Yue in the last round. But normal service looked to have resumed against the Czech in John Cain Arena. “It felt great playing today, I felt more free than in the first round so I wanted to go for it,” Swiatek said. “The conditions were not easy, I don’t know if you can tell. It’s super windy, so I needed to adjust to that so I’m happy for the performance for sure.” “This is not going to sound like I’m humble, but after winning so much, it’s hard to appreciate one match. I’m usually happy after I finish the whole tournament if I …
