Lukashenko Offers To Meet With Zelensky ‘Anywhere’ After Russia Sent Belarus More Tactical Nukes

We reported earlier this week that for the first time Russia’s ‘Union State’ ally Belarus hosted multi-day drills involving a “rehearsal” of Russia’s use of tactical and strategic nuclear weapons. The exercise ran from Tuesday to Thursday and was presided over by Presidents Lukashenko and Putin, and saw hundreds of Russian missile launchers, warships, nuclear submarines, and jets deploy and engage in military maneuvers. As part of it, Russia reportedly sent more tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. Pool image, via Moscow Times On the occasion, and amid angry denunciations from European leaders, the 71-year-old Lukashenko – who has ruled the former Soviet nation since 1994 – asserted that “We threaten absolutely no one.” He followed with: “But we have such weapons, and we’re ready in every possible way to defend our common fatherland from [the western Belarusian city of] Brest to [Russia’s Pacific port of] Vladivostok.” In Ukraine, President Zelensky warned Belarus of “consequences” over potential deepened involvement in Russia’s ‘special military operation’ – though Belarus did act as a staging ground for the initial attack waves …

Anthony Gordon smashes Newcastle records after Eddie Howe’s tactical masterstroke

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has challenged his players to make more history by reaching the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time. Howe’s team face Qarabag at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium in Baku on this evening in the first leg of their play-off tie with a place in the business end of the competition at stake and head coach Howe, who led the club to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years by clinching last season’s Carabao Cup, is determined to write a new chapter. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, he said: “It means everything to us. The opportunity for us to get to the last 16 of this competition would be an incredible achievement. “We’re trying to embrace it in that way and look at the excitement and the possibility rather than feel the burden of the pressure of the occasion. “We want to turn these moments into history and into moments people talk about for a long time. There’s a real excitement with this game.” Newcastle …

Man ran at U.S. Capitol with shotgun and tactical vest: Police chief

Heather Diehl | Getty Images A man carrying a shotgun and wearing a “tactical vest” on Tuesday got out of a car and ran toward the U.S. Capitol before being stopped by police officers stationed outside the building, law enforcement said. Officers drew their guns and ordered the man to drop the weapon, and he complied, U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan told reporters Tuesday afternoon. The man, who was also wearing “tactical gloves,” then laid down on the ground and was taken into custody, Sullivan said. When officers looked in the white Mercedes SUV from which the man had emerged, they found “a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask in the vehicle,” according to Sullivan. The man’s shotgun was loaded, and he was carrying additional rounds, the police chief said. Police did not immediately share the suspect’s identity, but Sullivan described him as an 18-year-old who does not live in the area. The vehicle was not registered to the man, and …

CBP Signs Clearview AI Deal to Use Face Recognition for ‘Tactical Targeting’

CBP Signs Clearview AI Deal to Use Face Recognition for ‘Tactical Targeting’

United States Customs and Border Protection plans to spend $225,000 for a year of access to Clearview AI, a face recognition tool that compares photos against billions of images scraped from the internet. The deal extends access to Clearview tools to Border Patrol’s headquarters intelligence division (INTEL) and the National Targeting Center, units that collect and analyze data as part of what CBP calls a coordinated effort to “disrupt, degrade, and dismantle” people and networks viewed as security threats. The contract states that Clearview provides access to “over 60+ billion publicly available images” and will be used for “tactical targeting” and “strategic counter-network analysis,” indicating the service is intended to be embedded in analysts’ day-to-day intelligence work rather than reserved for isolated investigations. CBP says its intelligence units draw from a “variety of sources,” including commercially available tools and publicly available data, to identify people and map their connections for national security and immigration operations. The agreement anticipates analysts handling sensitive personal data, including biometric identifiers such as face images, and requires nondisclosure agreements for …

On Washington’s Reported Plans To Once Again Store Tactical Nukes In The UK

Authored by Andrew Korybko, It’s possible that the US – whether under Trump 2.0 or whichever administration, including a possible Democrat one, comes afterwards – might agree to transfer its tactical nukes to Estonia in parallel with a possible British F-35A deployment to the latter’s base there. The Daily Mail cited Pentagon funding proposals to report in late December that the US plans to once again store tactical nukes in the UK upon renovating Lakenheath Airbase. The project is expected to cost $264 million and be completed by 2031. They added that “The U.K. will receive its (12 F-35A) jets at the end of this decade and it will be the first time it has had an air-launched tactical nuclear weapon since 1998. While it will own the jets, the U.S. will retain ownership of the nuclear weapons they come with.” Although they also wrote that “[this] represents confirmation that American nuclear weapons will return to Britain for the first time since President Barack Obama withdrew them 17 years ago”, that was assumed in June after two …
