US launches Hellfire missiles at tanker headed for Iran’s Kharg Island

The US has launched Hellfire missiles at an oil tanker attempting to reach Iran’s Kharg Island, after Donald Trump warned Tehran it “better behave” amid renewed strikes over the Strait of Hormuz. The unladen tanker had ignored multiple warnings before the US military fired the missiles into the ship’s smokestack, Central Command (Centcom) said. Kharg Island is home to a terminal through which Tehran exports most of its oil. It came as US forces carried out two waves of attacks on Iran’s coastal defences and missile sites on Wednesday after reimposing a naval blockade of its ports, an escalation which has come days after the collapse of a fragile truce collapsed. Iran struck back by targeting US military sites in neighboring countries in what it called an “existential war” with America. Tehran is also threatening to shut off more regional energy exports, as fears of a resumption of full-scale war grow. The United States military says it has launched another wave of strikes on Iran, while Tehran says it retaliated with missile and drone attacks against US military assets in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan. US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, said it concluded an evening wave of strikes against Iran at 9pm ET on Wednesday (01:00 GMT on Thursday), targeting “Iranian command centres, air defence sites, missile and drone capabilities, and coastal surveillance facilities” in an effort to reduce Iran’s ability to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list CENTCOM said the 90-minute operation targeted the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, a key Iranian naval hub overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, as well as coastal defence and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb island, one of three islands near the entrance to the waterway. Iranian air defences were activated over the capital, Tehran, as state media reported attacks across much of the country. Explosions were reported in Bandar Abbas and …

Saul Loeb | Afp | Getty Images The U.S. launched a fresh round of strikes on Iran early Wednesday morning, hours after President Donald Trump warned military strikes would intensify next week if Tehran does not cooperate in peace talks. U.S. Central Command said in a post on X on Wednesday that it had begun launching a wave of strikes against Iran at 6 a.m. ET. “The strikes are designed to further degrade military capabilities Iranian forces have used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz,” it said. Centcom had carried out more strikes against Iran on Tuesday. Tehran, meanwhile, has launched attacks on multiple Gulf countries. In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday evening, Trump hinted that the conflict was more likely to intensify than de-escalate as a fragile ceasefire agreed last month continues to fracture. “We’re going to hit them …

Vahid Salemi/AP hide caption toggle caption Vahid Salemi/AP DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The United States attacked Iran early Sunday morning over an Iranian strike on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz that set the container ship ablaze and forced its crew to abandon it. Iran apparently responded with attacks targeting Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The strait has become the key sticking point in any further negotiations between Iran and the United States to find a permanent end to the war that began back on Feb. 28. About a fifth of all traded oil and natural gas passed through the strait before the war began. Iran’s grip on it during the war led to a global energy crisis, though oil prices have sharply dropped since wartime highs of $120 a barrel. The U.S. military’s Central Command said it hit some 140 targets in …

Iran said Saturday that the new financial measure was a violation of the preliminary deal the two warring countries struck last month as its foreign minister reportedly arrived in Oman for talks. “1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat, pronounced in many corners of the Globe, to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting President of the United States of America, in this case, ME!” Trump wrote on Truth Social late Friday U.S. time. “Orders have already been given, and the U.S. Military is ready, willing, …

U.S. military strikes Iran, Trump says not sure he wants deal

U.S. forces launched another round of strikes against Iran in response to Tehran attacking commercial ships in or near the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command said Wednesday afternoon. “The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway,” CENTCOM said in an X post. The latest salvo came hours after President Donald Trump said he may no longer be interested in even trying to reach a deal with Iran. Trump earlier Wednesday had declared the fledgling U.S. ceasefire agreement with Iran “over” in light of renewed hostilities in the strait, and said he may order more military attacks. “I’m not sure I want to make a deal with them,” Trump said of Tehran during a press conference in Ankara, Turkey, where he had traveled to attend a summit of the NATO military alliance. “We can play games, but I’m not sure I want to make a deal,” Trump said, adding, “Let’s just finish the job.” The president had been asked why …

Hadi Mizban/AP hide caption toggle caption Hadi Mizban/AP DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The U.S. military attacked Iran early Wednesday after it said Tehran struck three ships in the Strait of Hormuz, part of an American effort that also revoked the Islamic Republic’s ability to openly sell crude oil in the world market. Iran retaliated with strikes targeting Bahrain and Kuwait. The regional crossfire raised the risks that an interim agreement to halt fighting in the war could break down, putting the Middle East again at risk of a wider conflict. The attacks on shipping and the resulting strikes came during the dayslong funeral for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed Feb. 28 in the war’s first moments at age 86. The funeral, which ends Thursday, had been thought to be a period of lower tensions — though mourners have …
