new undercover drama explores tense clash between state loyalty and criminal credibility

Netflix’s latest drama Legends offers a compelling window into the criminology of undercover policing, covert surveillance and organised crime. Inspired by a real UK customs investigation, the six-part drama follows ordinary British customs officers sent deep undercover to infiltrate drug trafficking gangs. Written by Neil Forsyth (also creator of Brink’s-Mat robbery drama The Gold), Legends balances tension and realism with a measured, slow-burn pace that prioritises character over spectacle. Steve Coogan plays Don, a former undercover police officer tasked with recruiting customs officers to go undercover themselves to infiltrate drug gangs. Much of its strength rests on the central performance of Tom Burke, whose portrayal of the lead undercover officer, Guy, anchors the series emotionally. Burke brings a quiet intensity to the role, capturing the unease, vulnerability, and moral ambiguity of someone living between identities. The supporting cast also does an exceptional job, reinforcing the drama’s grounded and realistic tone, capturing the collective pressure, uncertainty and emotional toll of undercover work. Becoming a legend Unlike elite operatives, these are everyday officials thrust into extraordinary criminal …

Geno Auriemma Apologizes for Tense Exchange With Dawn Staley After UConn Loss

PHOENIX (AP) — UConn coach Geno Auriemma has apologized for his actions during a heated exchange with Dawn Staley at the end of the Huskies’ loss to South Carolina in the women’s Final Four. A visibly upset Auriemma went over to Staley in the final seconds of South Carolina’s 62-48 victory on Friday night and appeared to chastise her. Coaches from both teams had to separate them. When the game finally ended, Auriemma walked off the court to the locker room without going back to shake hands with anyone from South Carolina. “There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina. It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut,” the Hall of Fame coach said in a statement on Saturday. “I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina. It was uncalled for in how I reacted. The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to detract from that. I’ve had a great …

Curling-Jacobs’ Canada see off Britain in tense final to win men’s curling gold

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy, Feb 21 : Brad Jacobs led Canada to their first Olympic men’s curling gold since 2014 after beating Britain 9-6 in a hard-fought final at the Winter Games on Saturday that went down to the wire. Jacobs, who also masterminded Canada’s success in Sochi in 2014, picked up his second gold medal, as did Marc Kennedy and Ben Hebert – who were both part of Kevin Martin’s winning team in Vancouver in 2010. For Canada, it was a triumphant end to a difficult campaign in which they were thrust into the centre of a media storm after being accused of cheating by Sweden during a round-robin game. “I’m glad it’s over and we won. It’s very relieving. It’s a hard couple of weeks. We went through a lot,” Jacobs said. “To persevere and get through that with everything that happened and all the distractions and all the nonsense. I’m a big believer in the curling gods and we were meant to win this one.” The gold was Canada’s fourth in men’s competition …

Trump Immigration Officials Shown Video of Alex Pretti’s Death in Tense Senate Hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) — The men tasked with carrying out President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda were made to watch a video of the shooting death of Alex Pretti in a slow, moment-by-moment analysis on Thursday by Sen. Rand Paul, who repeatedly cast doubt on the tactics used by federal officers and warned that the American public had lost trust in the country’s immigration agencies. It was a tense confrontation at a Senate hearing that was called to scrutinize the immigration chiefs as they carry out one of Trump’s signature policy and after the deaths of two protesters in Minneapolis over recent weeks at the hands of federal officers. Paul, who paused the video every few seconds to explain his interpretation of the events, argued that Pretti posed no threat to the officers and questioned why the situation culminated in the ICU nurse’s death. “He is retreating at every moment,” said Paul, speaking of Pretti’s behavior while officers pepper-sprayed him. “He’s trying to get away and he’s being sprayed in the face.” Paul’s comments were a …
