The Minneapolis tech community holds strong during ‘tense and difficult time’

The city’s tech scene is reeling as U.S. immigration agents have escalated their crackdown in Minneapolis, killing several people, including at least two U.S. citizens.  Eight Minneapolis-based founders and investors told TechCrunch that they have put much of their work on hold and now spend their days focused on their communities, volunteering at churches, and helping buy food. It’s part of a grassroots effort, across race and class, that is seeing people speak out, donate money, protest, and offer emotional support to one another.  “There’s a lot of commonality between how a teacher is reacting right now and how a tech professional is reacting,” Scott Burns, an investor in the area, told TechCrunch. He said people are “very fatigued.” Burns is going to church more often to help pack food to deliver to those too frightened to leave their homes. “It was like what happens after a natural disaster,” he said of the effort.  Burns and other members of the Minneapolis tech industry told TechCrunch that the immigration raids have been very disruptive to their …

Prince William caught on camera wincing during tense Aston Villa match – photos

Prince William enjoyed a surprise night out at the football last night – made all the more sweet by his team, Aston Villa, soaring to victory. The Prince of Wales, 43, was seen in the stands at Villa Park in Birmingham to watch the Europa League game against Salzburg FC, punching the air as his side won 3-2. The heir to the throne sat next to the owner and director of football for the club and also appeared to be joined by his childhood friend, Edward van Cutsem, the King’s godson. William’s eldest son, Prince George, 12, who has previously accompanied him to games, did not appear to be present.  The first half was tense, and Villa were losing 1-0 at half-time, with the Prince watching on in agony. The second appeared just as frustrating – as the side conceded another goal just five minutes into the restart – but an exciting comeback saw the side score three goals, with substitute player Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba, 19, kicking the winning ball.   It means the team finished …

Trump tariffs: Keir Starmer’s tense secret call to Trump as tariffs row explodes | UK | News

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has told Donald Trump that applying tariffs to allies for pursuing collective NATO security is “wrong.” In a telephone call this afternoon, the Prime Minister challenged the US President’s plan to impose trade penalties on the UK as a means of pressuring a deal for Greenland. Downing Street confirmed that Starmer used the call to reiterate that security in the High North remains a priority for all allies to protect Euro-Atlantic interests. The diplomatic standoff follows Trump’s announcement of a 10 per cent tariff on “any and all” UK goods starting February 1. The US administration has warned these levies will increase to 25 per cent from June 1 unless a deal is reached for Washington to purchase Greenland from Denmark. While the President has linked the trade barriers to his desire to acquire the Arctic territory, the UK government has maintained that the sovereignty of the island is not a matter for negotiation, reports PA. He said the same would apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands …

Venezuelan procession for La Divina Pastora takes on new weight in tense political moment

Venezuelan procession for La Divina Pastora takes on new weight in tense political moment

WASHINGTON (RNS) — It’s been 30 years since Jorge Garcia last joined the millions of people who have crowded the streets of Barquisimeto in northwest Venezuela for a procession with La Divina Pastora or “the Divine Shepherdess.” But three decades and thousands of miles have not dimmed his devotion to the Marian image and statue credited with several miracles, including interceding to end a 19th-century cholera epidemic. This year, after months of work by the four members of the Washington-area Society of La Divina Pastora, she was honored for the first time with a Mass on Wednesday (Jan. 14) in Washington’s Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle and with a new statue shipped from Venezuela where it was created by a famous teenage artist. The statue of La Divina Pastora arrived on Jan. 2, just hours before the U.S. military seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. “It’s not us. It’s God who moves everything,” Garcia said. La Divina Pastora’s celebration came at a moment when Venezuelans in the diaspora and homeland are navigating uncertainty, big emotions and …

Denmark, which is responsible for Greenland’s defense, Germany, France, Sweden and Norway have all confirmed plans to send military personnel to the sparsely populated island this week. U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed his sights on taking the island following an audacious military intervention in Venezuela to depose its president, Nicolás Maduro, on Jan. 3. The troop deployment comes shortly after the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland held talks with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House. Speaking to reporters alongside Greenland’s Vivian Motzfeldt, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen …

As Uganda approaches a tense presidential election, faith leaders urge fairness, peace

KAMPALA, Uganda (RNS) — As church bells echoed across Uganda’s capital at dawn, Mary Lunyolo whispered a prayer before opening her grocery stall in Owino Market. She plans to vote in Uganda’s general elections Thursday (Jan. 15), but she doubts whether her ballot will count amid allegations of rigging and a widening crackdown on opposition to the current president. “I will vote because it is my right,” Lunyolo, a 33-year-old mother of three, said as she arranged tomatoes and onions on a wooden table. “But many people are afraid. We hear about arrests and blocked rallies. You wonder if the results are already decided.” Her unease reflects a broader national mood as President Yoweri Museveni seeks a seventh term after nearly four decades in power. While Museveni is credited with restoring stability to the country after years of political turmoil, critics say his long rule has eroded democratic institutions, narrowed civic dialogue and entrenched a culture of fear. The election run-up has unfolded under heavy security, marked by arrests of opposition supporters, restrictions on rallies …

‘Protect the vote’: Bobi Wine, opposition brace for tense Uganda election | Elections News

Kampala, Uganda – When Bobi Wine, a singer-turned-politician whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, launched his campaign to become Uganda’s next president in October, he appeared in tailored suits, greeting crowds with a familiar smile. The mood, at least at first, felt cautiously hopeful. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list But by December, that image had disappeared. As campaigning comes to an end on Tuesday, Bobi Wine, who is the main opposition candidate looking to unseat long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, now only appears in public wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet. For many Ugandans, his change in attire – and the state violence that led to it – are symbols of a foregone political outcome: An incumbent victory likely to be rejected by his competitors. Since he was cleared to run in the election in September, Bobi Wine’s campaign convoy has frequently been met with tear gas, roadblocks and arrests of supporters. Campaign events are regularly disrupted, with people abruptly dispersing and roads sealed off. While the violence has not reached the deadly …
