Ryan Gosling’s ‘Ghost Rider’ Is Coming to Resurrect the MCU

After years of speculation, rumors, and Ryan Gosling himself mounting a very public casting campaign, it’s official: the fiery-hot film star is joining the MCU as fiery-hot anti-hero Ghost Rider. The news came on stage at Comic Con over the weekend, as part of Marvel’s typically reveal-heavy Hall H presentation, one of the biggest yearly events on the geek calendar; the showcase also saw new footage from Avengers: Doomsday, as well as the announcement of Industry’s David Jonsson as the new Black Panther, with his film set to release in December 2028. Of course, the loudest reaction was reserved for The Gos, who mounted the stage in a slick red jacket. (There are a few rules in life: death, taxes, and Ryan Gosling rocking a cool jacket wherever he goes.) He was introduced by MCU head honcho Kevin Feige, following a back-and-forth bit with Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz, who has frequently quizzed both Feige and Gosling about the long-standing Ghost Rider rumors. Welcome to Watch Guy Watches, GQ’s monthly curation of high-end timepieces for the true watch nerds among us. This July, Richard Mille partners with an Italian bike company, Hublot brings on the sapphire vibes, and both Vacheron and IWC offer new, shrunken versions of their flagship luxury sports watches. Despite being up to our wrists in collaboration watches between Breitling and Aston Martin, Omega and Swatch, and a Hamilton made for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the truly original still manage to burst through the clutter. Richard Mille’s new RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago clears this bar easily. This is not the type of watch I typically fawn over. Million-dollar “hyperwatches” are more interesting as abstract science experiments/art projects than as actual timekeepers. Colnago is an Italian bicycle manufacturer, and I don’t think I’ve ridden a bike in years. The watch’s appeal comes down to its sunny visuals: the blue-white colorway recalls a perfect day at sea with puffs of clouds in the distance. At the risk of sounding obvious: Making The Odyssey was no walk in the park. In the film, Odysseus and his army go on a wild bender across Ithaca, Troy, and the rest of it by foot and Viking longship. For the cast, that meant schlepping across six countries—Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland and the US—to embrace what director Christopher Nolan called the “physicality of the real world.” We would probably call it a recipe for plantar fasciitis. “Running through Troy, you know, it’s all stone. You’re in these sandals, and they’re very real,” Matt Damon told SiriusXM recently. It’s becoming easier, lately, to keep those procedures active, thanks to Nolan films like Oppenheimer and The Odyssey—currently sold out at IMAX Melbourne all the way to Sept. 6—but also a string of recent IMAX 70mm releases capitalizing on audience interest. Dune Part Two, Sinners, One Battle After Another, and Project Hail Mary have all played to packed crowds itching for IMAX 70mm even when the movie itself was shot digitally (the less said about Joker: Follie à Deux the better). Dune Part Three, which features footage shot on IMAX film cameras, will no doubt continue the trend late this year. And the audiences aren’t just boomers nostalgic for the days of film, either. “Some people have never seen film projected,” Ford says, noting that many young movie fans grew up after film projection had died out in the early-‘10s. “I suppose it’s curiosity to see what it’s like.” Ford even fields complaints from some of those patrons, particularly about the flicker produced by the shutter. Within the first ten minutes or so of this week’s House of the Dragon, the most polarizing knight in Westeros has joined countless others as the latest casualty in a familial squabble turned civil war. Doom has followed Cole (Fabien Frankel) for the better part of a season and a half. Ever since the horrific battle of Rook’s Rest in season two, Cole’s understood that he’s but an ant under the foot of a giant. Warfare with sword and shield was one thing, but Cole’s encounter with a walking, flying, fire-breathing beast capable of reducing people and buildings to ash in the blink of an eye opened his eyes up to the void, and he’s lingered there ever since, staring right into it. Any ‘90s kid would likely put The X-Files close to the top of their list of TV shows too sacred to touch, even in these remake, reboot and sequel-mad times. A Ryan Gosling Ghost Rider movie and the first Black Panther 3 cast announcements were among Marvel Studios’ big new-project reveals at San Diego Comic Con’s famed Hall H. Although there wasn’t much news on the X-Men front, this weekend’s presentation by Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige did contain a few slivers of insight as to where the MCU is headed in the aftermath of Avengers: Doomsday (whose latest trailer dropped this week in the swirling wake of The Odyssey, to somewhat muted reception online) and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Over the last few years, Charli XCX has emerged as the music world’s most high-profile Letterboxd power user. (That’ll come to no surprise of anyone who has a passing interest in online movie culture, has taken a cursory scan at the genre-bending pop titan’s socials.) Yet still, plenty of eyebrows shot up when David Cronenberg, the legendary body-horror auteur behind gnarly hits like Crash—the inspiration for the title of Charli’s fifth studio album—was revealed to feature on the closing track for her new album Music, Fashion, Film. Task and Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby has a superpower, and it’s bizarrely specific: the guy is incredibly good at writing bleak detective shows set in the darker corners of blue-collar Philly. Even if Task didn’t quite live up to the insane heights of Mare of Easttown, it was still one of the TV highlights of 2025. The HBO series had almost everything: Mark Ruffalo tearing it up as nihilistic FBI agent Tom Brandis, an equally brilliant villain turn from Tom Pelphrey, eerie cinematography, and killer twists to boot. It was also bleaker than the day your childhood dog died—but that was a feature, not a bug.
