Thirty years into his genre-defying career, there aren’t a whole lot of “firsts” left for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He’s main-evented WrestleMania six times; racked up nearly $14 billion dollars at the global box office; launched brands to hawk everything from skin care to tequila to signature sneakers; had his name bandied about in both Oscar races and presidential races. One thing he’s somehow never done before tonight, though? Climb the Met Gala steps. When it comes to the hypothetical desert-island scenario, most of us probably imagine packing for survival and sanity. (My three desert-island essentials, for example, would likely comprise a pair of crunchy hiking shoes, a machete, and a fat, parable-filled tome à la Edith Hamilton’s Mythology or, simply, the Bible.) But if you’re Timothée Chalamet, on a pseudo-ultra-private beach getaway with his partner of three years, Kylie Jenner, those proverbial essentials take on a different utility. In a 17-slide gallery posted to Instagram yesterday, the Dune star showed off a series of snaps from the couple’s recent trip, the itinerary of which appeared to include running on white sand, jetskiing, and, per his Instagram stories, listening to “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac. Judging from the contents of this post, Chalamet’s desert-island musts include a dainty Prada triangle-logo chain necklace, black board shorts, and a pair of Thom Browne-branded Asics sneakers (which, by the way, debuted on the GQ Bowl runway last month). Speaking of accessories: When Thom Browne was developing his new running shoe with Asics, he started where he always does. “It needed to work perfectly with that gray suit,” Browne tells me. The resulting trainer marks the designer’s very first sneaker collaboration. “I never really wanted to do it,” Browne says, matter-of-fact as ever. (He famously prefers a polished black wingtip.) In the 25 years since Browne, 60, recast American menswear with a radically shrunken version of the classic salaryman suit, the relevance of the luxury-sneaker collab has oscillated wildly, rising and falling along with practically every other trend under the sun. But the Thom Browne look—with its extreme yet exacting proportions—has remained singular and striking. Thom Browne’s design sensibility might be sharp and spare, but his runway shows are lush, maximalist performances. Browne’s fall 2026 show at GQ Bowl in San Francisco was no exception. The collection revolved around the shrunken men’s suit, Browne’s original and most radical idea, and how it has evolved in the 25 years since its introduction into a full spectrum of fantastical—and in this case, wintry and woolen—tailoring. Baltimore Raven DeAndre Hopkins made his way down the catwalk in a pleated skirt, continuing the tradition of Thom Browne outfitting football stars in boundary-pushing suiting. Also making their way through the Rodin Wing of the Legion of Honor was Minnesota Viking wide receiver Justin Jefferson, whose power parka was a wintery juxtaposition to the fiery backdrop that Thom Browne had set for the show, and former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Marcus Allen, who also rocked a parka over a pinstriped ensemble. Befitting the sport that inspired GQ Bowl, Browne showed off ripstop nylon blazers and wool overcoats lined with technical fabrics. The designer’s name and birth year (’65) made its way to the back of knits and Ivy-style blazers, further emphasizing the show’s connection to America’s favorite sport. The biggest surprise of the night came when Browne closed the show by having his models swap their winter-ready, ground-shaking boots for sneakers from the brand’s surprise collaboration with Asics: a designer take on the Gel-Kayano 14. Thom Browne is no stranger to sports. The American designer, who just sent his fall 2026 down the runway at our second-ever GQ Bowl, is also a lifelong athlete who’s outfitted major sports stars (LeBron and Messi come to mind) and has even staged fashion shows inspired by ice skating and surfing. The designer knows his way around classic American sportswear, the casual counterpart to the iconic shrunken suits that helped turn the brand into a sartorial standout. Since founding his namesake brand in 2001, Browne has yet to engage in a full-scale sneaker collaboration. Sure, the brand has offered its own sneakers before, but Browne has now allowed Asics into the world that he’s so carefully constructed for decades. Not so long ago, you might have been laughed at for suggesting that by 2026, pro football players would be clamoring to kit themselves out in high-fashion skirts. Sure, maybe when hell freezes over. Well, welcome to the second annual GQ Bowl, where Thom Browne staged his fall 2026 runway show with a vision of wintry fine tailoring set against a fiery backdrop at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor museum. GQ Bowl is a celebration of the warp speed collision between football and fashion that is reshaping both disciplines, and no American designer has influenced that phenomenon quite like Browne, who points to how star footballers like Odell Beckham, Jr. and JuJu Smith-Schuster have donned his signature pleated skirt in recent years. “It was difficult to put athletes in skirts at the beginning,” said Browne before the show. “Now they’re requesting them because they love it and they have the confidence to pull it off.” The GQ Bowl show drove Browne’s point home with catwalk cameos from future hall of fame wide receivers—and current tunnel-walk …
