Her childhood friend Sarah, to whom she’d been joined at the hip since they were small, was 15 and just on the cusp of womanhood when she was hit by a car and killed. “I had to accept that Sarah wasn’t actually just around the corner or gone to Australia on holiday,” she said. “The shock of that lasted a long time.” Scanlan, Bafta-winning star of The Thick of It and After Love, is speaking about Sarah’s death publicly for the first time, 50 years on. How a Clean, Tidy Home Can Help You Survive the Atomic Bomb: A Cold War Film from 1954

Not too far back, we revisited some Cold War propaganda that taught upstanding American citizens How to Spot a Communist Using Literary Criticism. It’s a gem, but it has nothing on the 1954 film, The House in the Middle. Selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, the short documentary makes the ultimate case for cleanliness. Bringing viewers to the Nevada Proving Grounds, the 12-minute film shows what happens when clean, white houses are subjected to heat waves from an atomic blast, versus what happens when a dingy, ill-kept house goes through the same drill. It turns out that neat people can not only claim moral victory (as they always do). They also get to live another day. Consider it proof of the survival of the tidiest. The film was produced by the National Clean Up-Paint Up-Fix Up Bureau with support from the Federal Civil Defense Administration. The National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association also apparently played a role, suggesting that corporate interests were capitalizing on wartime fear. Not the first time that’s happened in America. Or …

The best strimmers, whether petrol, electric or cordless, make it easy. In fact, if your garden needs serious landscaping, turn to a strimmer first. “If the grass is longer than your lawn mower can handle, the strimmer can take that down ready for you to go over it with the mower,” explains James Broadhouse, a professional groundskeeper of 12 years (known online as Jimmy The Mower). For something tougher, like a bramble patch, a powerful strimmer or brushcutter will also help. Below we’ve reviewed this year’s best strimmers from brands including Stihl, Ryobi and Bosch. You’ll also find answers to popular questions about them. But first, here’s our top five: The best strimmers: At a glance JUMP TO REVIEWS How to choose the best strimmer According to Broadhouse, the key things to look for in a …

Alex Tech 10-Foot Cable Sleeve Cable sleeves are even better, since they provide a mesh cover for bundles of cables, making it easy to remove or add cables. Label Your Cables If you have more than one cable, make sure that you label them. This can save you a lot of trouble later. Picking a different color for your Ethernet cables (or at least not black, white, or gray) can help you to immediately tell them apart from other cable types, especially handy if you’re installing them behind walls or under floors. How to Hide Ethernet Cables There are several ways to hide Ethernet cables, and some are much tougher and more invasive than others. Running an Ethernet cable along your baseboard or skirting board can be reasonably neat, and it’s easy to do. Depending on your baseboard style, there might …
