Euphrates River in Southern Iraq Credit: Aziz1005/Wikipedia/Creative Commons 4.0 At 1,739 miles (2,800 km) in length, the Euphrates is the longest river in Western Asia. Map of the Euphrates and Tigris River basin Credit: Karl Musser, Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 2.5 Originating in Turkey, the river is the lifeline for Syria and Iraq. Along with the Tigris River, the two define what is known as the Mespotamia basin. This is the area of the world, where Abraham was born and where the nation of Babylon was founded. Partially because of this, the Euphrates is the most mentioned river in the Bible. The first reference is actually found in the book of Genesis where the Euphrates and the Tigris are described as two of the four rivers that broke off from the main river the flowed out of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:14). The other two mentioned were the Pishon and Gihon. While, they have since been lost to history, recent satellite scans have uncovered the remains of a dry river bed that once flowed through …

Trump calls New York Times reporter ‘fake guy’: ‘It’s sort of treasonous what you write’

President Trump on Friday slammed what he described as “treasonous” media coverage of the U.S. conflict with Iran, accusing New York Times reporter David Sanger of misrepresenting the military operation. “I had a total military victory, but the fake news, guys like you, write incorrectly,” Trump told Sanger aboard Air Force One on the way… Source link

Top 10 Sci-fi TV Series ever — according to Radio Times readers

Top 10 Sci-fi TV Series ever — according to Radio Times readers

Earlier this year, we asked our readers to let us know what they believed to be the best sci-fi film of all time – and they certainly delivered, crowning Alien in the number 1 spot. Now, we’ve returned to them, this time looking instead for the greatest sci-fi TV series of all time. Our post (via Facebook) has almost 1000 comments, with fans weighing in with the best of the best from the genre on the small screen. Of course, sci-fi is extremely varied, and that has certainly shown up in the results, which we have sifted through to find the 10 most mentioned shows. The overall winner of the poll ended up being mentioned in almost one fifth of all comments. Like our film poll before it, the results have seen no shows which began in the past decade show up in the top 10 – the most recent entry on the list began in 2015, while the oldest series started back in 1963 (if you’re a sci-fi fan, you probably know which one …

Israel to Sue New York Times Over Article on Rape of Palestinian Detainees, Netanyahu Says

Israel to Sue New York Times Over Article on Rape of Palestinian Detainees, Netanyahu Says

JERUSALEM, May 14 (Reuters) – Israel plans to sue The New York Times and one of its journalists for defamation over an article that said Israeli soldiers, prison guards and settlers had used widespread sexual violence against Palestinian ‌prisoners.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said ‌on Thursday he had instructed his legal advisers “to consider the harshest legal action” against the newspaper and Nicholas Kristof, a veteran journalist who reported the story from the occupied West Bank. “They defamed the soldiers of Israel and perpetuated a blood libel about rape, trying to create a false symmetry between the genocidal terrorists of Hamas and Israel’s valiant soldiers,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “We will fight these lies in the court of public opinion and in the court of law. Truth will prevail,” he added.      The United Nations and rights groups say they have documented the use of sexual violence by both Israel and Hamas since the militant Palestinian group’s assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered Israel’s war in Gaza.  Netanyahu did not say where …

Back in the Valley | Radio Times

Back in the Valley | Radio Times

Add Death Valley to your watchlist In a hazy police station atrium in south Wales, police consultant John Chapel and DI Janie Mallowan are confronting a murder suspect. Their evidence? Impeccable. Their psychological profiling? Absolutely top-notch. Surely, they’ll get this “whodunnit” wrapped up in no time. Except – CUT! – there needs to be another take. As Death Valley stars Timothy Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth wait, a smoke machine revs up again, to create the illusion of a stultifying, overheated summer day inside Trebach Police Station. In reality, it’s a chilly November morning, and Trebach Police Station is a set deep within Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff, fully laid out with corridors, stairs, interview rooms, CCTV nerve centres and offices. There’s even a vending machine filled with real food – apparently, regularly raided by members of the cast. Not far away lies the cozy cottage of actor-turned-sleuth Chapel, stuffed with mementos from his career including a Bafta award and two – count them – framed copies of a Radio Times cover from when his fictional …

Fit for a King | Radio Times

Add Chelsea Flower Show to your watchlist The King’s recent state visit to the US was a little strange for Frances Tophill. The monarch at the centre of the world’s attention is the same man she’s currently creating a garden with. “Watching it gave me a very bizarre feeling,” says the Gardeners’ World presenter, author and horticulturalist. “I live with permanent impostor syndrome, and seeing the King there reinforced my own feeling of, ‘Wait, I’m doing what?’” Tophill is head designer of the Curious Garden. Supported by the Royal Horticultural Society and the King’s Foundation, the garden is a joint enterprise with the King, Alan Titchmarsh and Sir David Beckham and will feature at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show; the ultimate accolade for any garden designer. Tophill’s first show garden was a mix of tin shacks and native herbs that won first prize at BBC Gardeners’ World Live at Birmingham’s NEC in 2022. “In my mind it was the set for a post-apocalyptic movie,” she explains. “It was quite rough and edgy.” Chelsea is …

View from my Sofa: | Radio Times

Add A Taste of Murder to your watchlist What’s the view from your sofa? It depends on the sofa. From one, you can see the telly. From the other, you’re looking through the house, through patio doors and out onto our side return. Our “sit-oot-erie”, as I like call it because you can “sit oot”. Do you like being outside? I do. I used to garden more than I do now because we had a bigger one at the time in north London. But this one doesn’t need much looking after. Just a lot of sweeping up. Elena, your character in A Taste of Murder, runs a restaurant in Capri with her husband: he cooks while she’s front-of-house. Are you a hostess with the mostest in real life? I don’t know about “the mostest” but I used to host a lot, and I did enjoy it. Elena’s gregarious and welcoming and she loves her job – she’s been married to an Italian for 40 years, so she’s taken on Italian sensibilities. But alongside being the …

To Catch a King is on Wednesday at 9.30am on Radio 4. Add it to your collection now The hardest thing for Rob Lawrie was video-calling the father of a drowned migrant. “I knew his son had died, but I couldn’t tell him for certain,” says Lawrie, recalling the moment he and Sue Mitchell, making their new people-smuggling podcast To Catch a King, contacted the family of a young Iraqi Kurd who had disappeared while attempting to cross the channel to England. “There were probably close to 100 people on that boat. If someone goes overboard, no one’s going to see it, everyone just wants to stay alive. I was trying to give him hope when there wasn’t any hope, but as we talked I saw the realisation dawning in his eyes. It’s one of the most heartbreaking conversations I’ve ever had in my life.” Lawrie, a 59-year-old British Army veteran from West Yorkshire, admits a tendency to get emotionally involved in his work. That is how his professional relationship with Mitchell began. Lawrie was …
