Scissors and tweezers from the tomb of Xia Quan, with residues containing the anaesthetic aconitine Courtesy Xue Ling, et al Two medical instruments recovered from the 15th-century tomb of a Chinese surgeon carry traces of an anaesthetic compound, the earliest chemical evidence ever found of doctors attempting to reduce the pain of a medical procedure. The surgical scissors and tweezers were unearthed in 1974 from the tomb of a famous doctor named Xia Quan who lived from 1348 to 1411, in Jiangsu province. Congcang Zhao at Northwest University in Xi’an, China, and his colleagues used lasers to study the composition of residues on the instruments, revealing traces of aconitine. This compound is produced by plants of the Aconitum genus, commonly known as wolfsbane and monkshood. They are frequently listed as ingredients in ancient Chinese medicinal prescriptions. Aconitine interacts with sodium channels in the cell membranes of neurons. At the right dose, it has an anaesthetic effect, but it is highly toxic and is rarely used today due to the risks of poisoning. The residues are …

A newly excavated Roman-era tomb found at Al-Bahnasa, site of the ancient city of Oxyrhynchus, offers insights into Egyptian funerary practices during the Greek and Roman periods (332 BCE–641 CE). The find, announced by the Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Ministry, was made by a team of Egyptian and Spanish researchers led by archeologists Esther Pons of Spain’s National Archaeological Museum and Maite Mascort of the University of Barcelona.   Among the contents of the tomb were several mummies elaborately wrapped in decorated linen; alongside them the team found three gold amulets shaped like tongues and one made of copper, objects that would allow the dead to speak in the afterlife. The archaeologists also noted traces of gold leaf on some of the mummies, suggesting elaborate funerary rituals. A newly exhumed tomb in central Panama has revealed stores of riches as well as signs of human sacrifice. As reported by ZME Science, scientists working at the 1,000-year-old burial chamber known at Tomb 3 in El Caño Archaeological Park found stashes of gold as well as remains of a central buried figure surrounded by others who were likely sacrificed. “Besides the remains, the ‘Lord of Tomb 3’ lay swaddled in a fortune of gold, including massive gold pectorals, gold earrings, and intricate gold ornaments depicting crocodile teeth and bat wings,” according to ZME. Developer Crystal Dynamics has already announced two games: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the first title from 1996, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the newest entry, coming in 2027. Archaeologists in southern Mexico have unearthed a 1,400-year-old Zapotec tomb bearing intricate carvings, a discovery hailed by experts as “the most significant” of the last decade.  The tomb was discovered in San Pablo Huitzo, Oaxaca, and dates to around the year 600 CE, according to a statement released last week by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). Experts have noted the exceptional preservation of the burial chamber’s features, including a sculpture of an owl perched at its entrance. A sculpture of a man’s head is visible inside the owl’s beak, thought to represent the individual interred within the tomb, the INAH said. The Zapotec language is still spoken by hundreds of thousands people in Mexico, where the owl, in Zapotec culture, symbolizes night and day.
