Dow confirms correction as traders worry about war

Dow confirms correction as traders worry about war

March 27 : The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.7 per cent on Friday as investors worried about the global economic impact of the war in Iran, leaving the blue-chip index down 10 per cent from its record high close on February 10 and confirming it has been in a correction since then.  In a broad Wall Street selloff fueled by uncertainty about the U.S. and Israeli war with Iran, the Dow in recent days has suffered its worst decline since April 2025, when U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” global tariff announcement sent global markets into a tailspin. On Thursday, the tech-heavy Nasdaq confirmed it has been in a correction since its record high close on October 29. The S&P 500 is down about 9 per cent from its record high close on January 27. While investment funds are generally not benchmarked to the Dow, the price-weighted index of 30 companies is well known among Main Street investors and its steep decline reflects a broad deterioration of investor sentiment. With the selloff driven by fears the Middle East conflict will cripple the global …

Nomura hires FX traders in Asia on bet high volatility to drive demand

TOKYO, March 12 : Nomura Holdings is bolstering its foreign-exchange and emerging markets trading teams in Asia on the view that volatility will persist, driving demand from its clients. Japan’s biggest brokerage also expects the favourable market conditions that drove global equities to all-time highs will soon reassert themselves as geopolitical tensions ease and record oil prices retreat. “Our macro businesses tend to perform well in periods of volatility. So that has been a big theme for us and probably is going to continue being one of our main focus areas,” Nomura’s head of global markets, Rig Karkhanis, said in an interview with Reuters this week. The macro business spans interest rates, foreign exchange and emerging markets trading, which clients use to diversify and rebalance their portfolios. Despite expecting prolonged volatility, Karkhanis projects the overall favourable environment for stocks has another two years to run, driven by large-scale investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure that will boost productivity and growth. “My base case is we’ll see a normalisation of geopolitical risk. Oil price volatility is likely a …

Kalshi sued by traders over disputed Khamenei prediction market payout fight

Kalshi sued by traders over disputed Khamenei prediction market payout fight

Two California traders have filed a federal class action lawsuit accusing prediction market operator Kalshi of misleading users and refusing to pay contracts tied to the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The complaint, reviewed by ReadWrite and filed March 5 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, says the platform ran a market asking whether Iran’s supreme leader would leave office before certain dates, then changed how the contracts were settled after the triggering event occurred. According to the complaint, thousands of traders believed they had winning positions but never received the full payouts they expected. How Kalshi and Polymarket prediction market traders make money : NPR

Logan Sudeith, 25, estimates he clocks about 100 hours a week on prediction markets. Evan Frost for NPR hide caption toggle caption Evan Frost for NPR Ask Logan Sudeith how many bets he places in a week and he’ll laugh. It’s a comical line of questioning for the 25-year-old former financial risk analyst, who estimates he clocks about 100 hours a week on prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket. After a while, understandably, some of the bets blur together. What are his net profits, though? That’s a number he’s got at the ready. “Last month, I made $100,000,” said Sudeith, who does most of his trading from his laptop while bed-lounging in his Atlanta apartment. He’s executing so many orders on the sites, he says, that he has no time to cook. So he DoorDashes every meal. “My last salary was $75,000 a year, so I left my job to trade full time,” he said Some of his biggest hauls in recent months include lucrative stakes on Time Magazine’s person of the year ($40,236), the most-searched …
