From neat lawns to wild havens: how No Mow May is transforming England’s gardens | Wild flowers

Ian Waddington was crouched in his garden last summer, inspecting loose paving, when he lifted a slab and spotted something extraordinary: a tiny field mouse nestled in a hollow, feeding four babies – each half the size of his little finger. “It was astonishing. Like life in miniature,” he says. After decades in the construction industry, the 86-year-old has found a new passion in retirement – nature. The discovery of the field mice made him realise his garden could be a thriving habitat for animal and plant life. This year, Waddington joined the No Mow May movement and allowed his garden grow wild through spring. Now in its ninth year, No Mow May – run by the charity Plantlife – encourages people to stop mowing their lawns during the first month of spring to allow their gardens to become more biodiverse. In the Cheshire village of Tattenhall, many others have taken part over the years, connecting with nature through their back gardens. Janet Dutton, 69, let her lawn grow wild while caring for her sick …

AI is transforming pediatric surgery, but with strong ethical concerns

AI is transforming pediatric surgery, but with strong ethical concerns

Before a child goes into an operating room, a large screen displays a risk score. This score predicts potential complications, provides an estimated time for recovery, and recommends the course of action. While the numbers appear to be accurate, the process that goes into creating them is harder to see. Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly emerging in the field of paediatric surgery by offering greater accuracy in diagnosis, enhanced planning capabilities for surgery, and reduced amounts of paperwork for the clinician. However, the same technologies that have enabled doctors to streamline care have also introduced a new source of uncertainty for parents and caregivers when making decisions about children who are unable to speak for themselves. How AI Intersects With The OR The advantages of AI in the operating room (OR) are obvious. For example, machine learning programs have been developed that allow for the identification of surgical risks and complications. Other machine learning systems can interpret imaging studies and predict the likelihood of complications occurring after a complex surgical procedure. There are also applications …

The 5-step algorithm that’s transforming legacy companies

The 5-step algorithm that’s transforming legacy companies

From The Algorithm: The Hypergrowth Formula That Transformed Tesla, Lululemon, General Motors, and SpaceX by Jon McNeill. Published by Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House, LLC. Copyright (c) 2026. When I started at Tesla, I assumed that Elon and I looked at work processes from much the same perspective. This was true, but only to a degree. The company had gone from a start-up to a large manufacturer without really defining how to solve problems and scale. Instead, incredible talent and creativity in the moment drove many breakthroughs. But as Tesla grew, the whole team began to define an entire operating system that emphasized speed and simplicity. The objective: exponential growth. Elon called this formula “the Algorithm.” To survive in the twenty-first century, older companies need growth and efficiency just as much as anyone. The steps of the Algorithm can lead to dramatic improvement in speed and quality, even in the most venerable enterprises. Consider General Motors. The century-old behemoth has a reputation, gained over the decades, for …

How big data is transforming what we know about the universe

How big data is transforming what we know about the universe

Science in the modern era is increasingly reliant on enormous datasets and automated analysis. In astronomy, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) – a ten-year survey covering the entire southern sky almost a thousand times over the next decade – will test the limits of this reliance. The Rubin observatory, located on a mountaintop called Cerro Pachón in Chile, is expected to catalogue the night sky in exquisite detail. The observatory aims to answer a number of questions about the universe by studying different phenomena in the sky, including supernovae (exploding stars), asteroids, dark matter and the properties of our own galaxy. What it will also answer is a question dominating all areas of science in the 21st century: how is discovery viewed in the age of big data? Although primarily funded by the US Department of Energy and National Science Foundation (NSF), the Rubin telescope is the product of a collaborative effort by astronomers spanning six continents and over a dozen countries. Assistance in setting up its data …

Transforming care for companion animals

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) is committed to advancing the health and wellbeing of companion animals across the globe. Improving care for companion animals requires global collaboration, strong professional standards and a commitment to continuous learning. At the forefront of this effort is the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) – a worldwide network of over 390,000 veterinarians worldwide drawn from its 113 member associations. This community works together to advance the health and welfare of companion animals across the globe and to offer a voice for companion animal veterinarians around the world. The Innovation Platform spoke to Dr Jim Berry, President of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, to learn more about its work and plans for the year ahead. Can you briefly outline the work of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association and its main focus areas? WSAVA aims to advance the health and welfare of companion animals and to advocate on behalf of companion animal veterinarians – and the wider veterinary team – globally. This is done by concentrating on …

His ‘modern Seoul cuisine’ restaurant, serving only a tasting menu, often saw customers requesting à la carte items or questioning meal duration. Today, Lee’s conversations have evolved, focusing on flavour combinations, cooking techniques, and the philosophy underpinning his creations. “Many people either didn’t know this culture existed or weren’t particularly interested,” said Lee, whose restaurant name means “well-made” in French. “But now they’re becoming interested, and when they come to dine, the questions they ask — the style of their questions — have more depth.” Chefs and culinary experts say part of the shift is driven by Netflix’s cooking competition series “Culinary Class Wars,” where Lee recently appeared in the second season. The unscripted series pits acclaimed “white spoon” chefs — including Michelin-starred …

The Shoes and Brooms Transforming Curling at the 2026 Winter Olympics

The Shoes and Brooms Transforming Curling at the 2026 Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympic Games have begun, and once again the sport of curling is set to draw in scores of new converts. Although dominated by Sweden, Canada, Switzerland, and Scotland, many eyes during the 2026 Winter Olympics will be on the team from host country Italy thanks to Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner, the reigning Olympic and world curling champions in mixed doubles. Regardless of which country takes home the gold, the real attention during the Olympics this year might be on the cool gadgets curlers use. Somewhat similar to a game of shuffleboard played with brooms and stones, curling has seen some pretty interesting advances in the gear that’s used on the ice. In addition to raw skill and strategy, here’s everything you need to know about the state of the sport. Scottish Stones Nearly every curling stone—the round rock that slides down the ice—comes from the same place: Ailsa Craig. The 99-hectare island site in the Firth of Clyde inlet on Scotland’s west coast is known for its granite, and by extension its …

How leading CPG brands are transforming operations to survive market pressures

How leading CPG brands are transforming operations to survive market pressures

Presented by SAP The consumer packaged goods industry is experiencing a fundamental shift that’s forcing even the most established brands to rethink how they operate. It’s what some folks call the CPG squeeze, or a convergence of margin compression, trade policy headwinds, and the sobering reality that pricing-led growth is no longer a viable strategy. For companies that have relied on price increases to drive revenue, it’s a structural change that demands new approaches to operations, strategy, and competitive positioning. CPG companies now need to achieve annual productivity gains of 5% or more just to stay competitive. Traditional cost-cutting measures like travel freezes, hiring pauses, and other age-old efficiency drives from simpler times might yield a couple of percentage points at best. The solution lies in a more sophisticated approach: identifying which processes can be digitally enabled before making organizational changes, confronting questions about process efficiency, manual workflows, and opportunities for automation. But piecemeal solutions that address isolated problems can’t deliver the systemic efficiency gains that CPG companies now require. This is driving increased interest …

Transforming Anger Into Harmony | Psychology Today

As holiday lights of winter grow dim, we look forward to sparkling smiles on “hearts and flowers” day. However, love and gratitude during this year’s Valentine’s month may require a miracle to dissipate clouds of political anger. Anger can play a positive role Despite what we know about the damaging effects of anger within ourselves and our relationships, during political division, anger may play an important role if properly channeled. When anger spurs action and encourages a fair, equitable, and peaceful society, then perhaps it can play a role in creating harmony. Two ways to mitigate anger: Creating a new neural pathway in the brain. Embracing and practicing gratitude. New neural pathways in the brain Switching off negativity may take a process that involves neuroplasticity. According to Puderbaugh and Emmady (Journal of Behavioral Science, 2023), “Neuroplasticity, also known as neural plasticity or brain plasticity, is a process that involves adaptive structural and functional changes to the brain.” Simply put, it is “the ability of the nervous system to change its activity in response to intrinsic …
