Netflix’s ‘striking’ 3-part true crime series The Predator of Seville leaves viewers with ‘chills’

Netflix is one of the main platforms for true crime shows, and the streaming giant has recently released The Predator of Seville, and it’s been shooting up its charts, currently in fourth place in the United Kingdom, despite being out for less than a week. The show follows the story of Gabrielle Vega, a university student who was abroad in Spain when she was sexually assaulted by tour guide Manuel Blanco Vela. Although Gabrielle initially kept the attack to herself, when she shared the story on social media, many others came forward with their own experiences that mirrored her own. The episodes follow Gabrielle’s trip abroad, her social media post that prompted such a viral response, before culminating in Manuel’s trial. A synopsis for the three-part series reads: “One woman’s quest for justice against a tour guide in Spain sparks a surge of similar claims from many U.S. students over the years.” WATCH: See the trailer for The Predator of Seville What is the real story? According to research by Amanda Vicary, a criminal psychology expert, the number of women interested in the true crime genre continues to climb. Many of us have fond memories of gathering in a circle and taking turns spinning a thrilling tale as kids.  We may not sit around a campfire anymore, but we use technology to satisfy our need for mystery and suspense with TV shows, movies, and podcasts centered on true crime. Women are turning to the genre in increasing numbers because it’s actually cathartic for them. Here are four psychological reasons experts say true crime stories are actually cathartic for women: 1. They believe they will learn something from them www.kaboompics.com | Pexels This might be because women frequently see themselves in true crime stories. Man arrested after parents report foul smell – devastating discovery | World | News

David Sparks pled guilty to the murder (Image: Lincoln County Pretrial) Five years ago, the parents of David Sparks reported a foul smell coming from their property to police – and what was found was horrifying. Their report led to the discovery of the decomposing body of Savannah Spurlock which was found on the farm belonging to David Sparks’ parents. Savannah had gone missing six months beforehand. The last person to see her alive was Sparks, who also lived next door to his parents. After his arrest for Savannah’s murder in July 2019, cops found an incriminating journal at his home, where he chillingly wrote: “How do you look your mother in the eyes and tell her you’re a born psychopath? Queen Camilla Meets Gisèle Pelicot at Clarence House: “Your Story Has Left Me Speechless”

On Monday, February 23, Queen Camilla welcomed Gisèle Pelicot, the French woman who testified against her husband in a high-profile rape trial last year, to her home in the royal residence of Clarence House. Over tea, the two women discussed Pelicot’s book, A Hymn to Life: Shame Has to Change Sides, which chronicles how Pelicot escaped marital sexual violence. The wife of King Charles said she read the 320-page story in two days. “I couldn’t put it down,” said Queen Camilla, according to The Times. “I’ve met so many survivors of rape and sexual assault that I thought I couldn’t be shocked by anything anymore, but your story overwhelmed me—it left me speechless.” Pelicot was joined by her partner, Jean-Loup Agopian, and her editorial and legal team for the visit, the BBC reports. The Cocreators of RuPaul’s Drag Race Bring a Shocking Killing to HBO

When it debuted in the fall of 2011, Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story blurred the line between fiction and reality with its allusions to real-life cases such as mass nurse murderer Richard Speck, the Black Dahlia case, and the slayings at Amityville manor. But just a year before the series dropped, there was a different high-profile homicide less than two hours from Murphy’s hometown of Indianapolis involving a huge brick mansion and an ominous rubber suit—eerie similarities to the first season of the FX series. Now that case is the subject of a new HBO docuseries helmed by two other iconic filmmakers: Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the directors/producers behind RuPaul’s Drag Race, Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures, and Party Monster, 2003’s dramatic adaptation of the Michael Alig manslaughter case. The crime at the heart of Murder in Glitterball City, which premieres on February 19, shares some themes with Party Monster; both involve drugs, gay men, and homicide. And with both projects, Barbato tells Vanity Fair, their goal as filmmakers wasn’t to further sensationalize an …

At Nancy Guthrie’s Home, a Surreal Scene of Chaos and Camaraderie

At Nancy Guthrie’s Home, a Surreal Scene of Chaos and Camaraderie

“It’s Monday morning quarterbacking,” Nanos said. “I do it all the time, so you can do that for me. I’ll take that hit.” And to a question about whether possible evidence could have been contaminated? That’s a later problem. “I’ll let the courts worry about that.” Even a widely reported SWAT action at a residence near Guthrie’s home Friday night was accompanied by little context: Media assembled at a designated point, expecting an update, but were told hours later that there would be no formal statement. “Because this is a joint investigation, at the request of the FBI – no additional information is currently available,” the PCSD said via X. According to CNN, no suspects were detained in the law enforcement swarm, which blocked a road about two miles from the primary scene. Day after day for almost two weeks, a growing number of people—media professionals and self-appointed citizen investigators alike—have flocked to Nancy’s home in the Catalina Foothills outside Tucson, where information comes out in drips and drabs, sudden flurries of activity erupt and …

As Savannah Guthrie Tells Her Mother’s Kidnappers ‘We Will Pay,’ Ransom Note’s Monday Deadline Approaches

As Savannah Guthrie Tells Her Mother’s Kidnappers ‘We Will Pay,’ Ransom Note’s Monday Deadline Approaches

Last seen at her home on Saturday, January 31, Nancy Guthrie has now been missing for over a week. The 84-year-old mother of TODAY anchor Savannah Guthrie was abducted from her home just outside of Tucson, Arizona, late that night, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department says. But through local investigators and the FBI have investigated numerous tips, they have yet to identify any suspects, local police confirmed on Saturday. Complicating the investigation are a proliferation of ransom notes sent to local news outlets, some of which have been revealed as fake. But the latest note was soon followed by a message from the Guthrie family, which announced on Saturday that it would follow the kidnappers’ demands. The newest message from Nancy Guthrie’s children follows a Thursday video featuring Nancy’s son Camron Guthrie, which was posted to his sister’s Instagram account. “Whoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you,” he said then. “We haven’t heard anything directly. We need you to reach out, and we need a way to communicate with …

Nickelodeon Star Kianna Underwood Killed in Brooklyn Hit-And-Run

Kianna Underwood, a former child actor known for roles in early-aughts Nickelodeon hits including All That and Little Bill, was killed Friday while walking in New York City. She was 33. Underwood starred in the last season of All That, a show that kicked off the career of controversial screenwriter Dan Schneider, who was later accused of abuse and misconduct while at the network, which he exited in 2018. Those claims were later investigated by true crime series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. (Schneider, for his part, sued the producers of the series for defamation, in a case that is currently ongoing.) During her 2005 run on the series, she shared the screen with Amanda Bynes, Nick Cannon, and Kenan Thompson, the latter of whom encouraged Nickelodeon to “investigate more” following Quiet On Set‘s release. “I have fond memories of that place, and I have fond memories of my costars and stuff like that,” Thompson said. ”So to hear that they’ve gone through terrible things like that is really tough.” Underwood …

Vanity Fair’s Limited Series ‘Fear Not’ Stars Anne Hathaway as a Faithful Mother Who Escapes a Serial Killer

Vanity Fair’s Limited Series ‘Fear Not’ Stars Anne Hathaway as a Faithful Mother Who Escapes a Serial Killer

In 2023, Vanity Fair told the story of Margy Palm, a mother of two who came face-to-face with a notorious serial killer and lived. In “Sympathy for the Devil,” Palm opened up to Julie Miller about her harrowing captivity at the hands of Stephen Morin—who was suspected of more than 30 murders—and how her patience and prayers kept him at bay long enough for her to figure out a daring escape. Now that acclaimed article is being adapted into a Paramount+ limited series starring Anne Hathaway as Palm, the survivor who formed a bond with the man who nearly ended her life. With Bash Doran (Outlaw King) as showrunner and Miller as a consulting producer, Fear Not will premiere in 2027. “By grounding this chilling true story in the lived experience of our protagonist, Anne is bringing a level of nuance and gravity to the screen that only a performer of her caliber can,” says Jane Wiseman, head of originals for Paramount+. “At Paramount+, we are always looking for stories that captivate and entertain our …
