For nearly five months, Donald Trump and his Cabinet have been misleading the American people about the war in Iran. When the president makes statements about the war, they are full of wishful thinking, hyperbole, and outright lies. He has devoted a full address to the topic only once—a rambling prime-time speech nearly four months ago that contained little substance. At this point, after more than 20 weeks of hostilities and at least 18 Americans dead and hundreds wounded, the people of the United States do not—cannot—entirely know what is happening, what progress U.S. forces are making, or what the president’s goals are. This opacity seems to be by design: The president and his lieutenants appear unwilling to admit that they started, and are now losing, a war with one of America’s most dedicated enemies, and obfuscating probably seems less damaging than admitting this painful truth. The “post-truth era” refers to a current trend in the zeitgeist, particularly in the media and political landscapes, in which it has been speculated that emotional appeals and personal beliefs have become more influential on public opinion than facts. I say zeitgeist here because I’m not convinced that such speculation spreads across all of society in a manner that infiltrates “good-thinking” people. People with a basic understanding of epistemology are aware that facts should outweigh emotions and beliefs as sources of evidence, and, as good thinking still exists, I’m confident that this refers to the many, if not most. However, that doesn’t mean that post-truth hasn’t infiltrated a larger-than-it-should cohort or that we might see “good thinkers” fall prey to such post-truth approaches more often than they should. However, I do think the potential for this speculation to have weight is more widespread than simply relegating it to a pop culture issue. So, I think ‘zeitgeist’ is a good fit—the spirit of this unfortunate possibility is certainly manifest in the background of things. With that, …

By the 20th century, doctors were suggesting repressed emotions might be at fault, leading to suggestions that women – who suffer from migraines far more than men – were simply too fragile and neurotic. As recently as a couple of decades ago, “vascular theory” – the idea that blood vessels in the brain expanding and contracting were to blame – was still the standard explanation in many medical schools. Data centers will exacerbate droughts throughout the country and “drain the great lakes,” as one popular Reddit thread puts it. The former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has taken up the issue, sarcastically posting at one point: “How dare the peasants complain about data centers stealing their water and driving the cost of electricity!!” The other school, populated by Silicon Valley types, holds that “The Data Center Water Crisis Isn’t Real,” as an article in the right-wing publication Pirate Wires argued in December. The issue with water “is totally fake,” “insane,” and has “no connection to reality,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said a few months ago.
