Charles on a mission: Can king’s state visit salvage US-UK ties? – The Debate

Call it the royal trump card: King Charles dispatched to Washington on a state visit at the lowest point in the Special Relationship in at least seven decades. We’ll ask if catering to Donald Trump’s enthusiasm for the British crown can dispel the bad blood over tariffs, the war in Iran… and repeated jibes by the U-S president to make Canada the 51st state, Canada a Commonwealth member whose head of state is the same Charles the Third invited to address Congress and feted at a state dinner. Does the successor to Queen Elizabeth have what it takes to keep a poker face and stick to the script prepared by his prime minister? All it takes is a hot mic or a raised eyebrow for the media covering the four-day visit to go into overdrive. Then of course, there’s the matter of the king’s brother, the former prince Andrew who’s been criminally indicted following the same Epstein files revelations that brought down UK ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson. Coincidence of the calendar has Keir …

Trump Threatens To Cancel the US-UK Trade Deal In Latest Attack on Starmer

Trump Threatens To Cancel the US-UK Trade Deal In Latest Attack on Starmer

Donald Trump has threatened to rip up the US-UK trade deal as he launched yet another attack on Keir Starmer. The US president said the agreement “can always be changed” as relations between the two countries remain in the deep freeze. Trump has made a series of jibes at the prime minister after Starmer initially refused to let US jets use RAF bases to bomb Iran. He was again repeated them in an interview with Sky News, as he also condemned the PM’s policies on North Sea oil and immigration. The president said: “I think I like Starmer, but I think that he’s made a tragic mistake in closing the North Sea oil. You see your energy prices are the highest in the world and I think he’s made a tragic mistake on immigration. “I love your country and I would love to see it succeed, but if you have bad immigration policies and bad energy policies you have the worst of both. You can’t succeed, it’s not possible.” He added: “A lot of people …

A Speech From a British Monarch Returns to Capitol Hill as US-UK Tensions Simmer

WASHINGTON (AP) — King Charles III will deliver an address to Congress during his visit to Washington in late April, becoming the first British monarch to give a speech to a joint meeting of U.S. lawmakers in more than three decades. President Donald Trump’s “America First” foreign policy has called into question the U.S. commitment to European allies, and Britain has declined to support the U.S. involvement in the war in Iran. Still, congressional leaders emphasized the close relationship between the U.S. and Britain. “The American experiment endures in no small part because of the British tradition from which it sprang,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer in a letter addressed to Charles. “We believe an Address to Congress will provide a unique opportunity to share your vision for the future of our special relationship and reaffirm our alliance at this pivotal time in history.” In Britain, some members of Parliament have called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to cancel …

The King has been invited to address Congress during a state visit to the US. Buckingham Palace revealed on Tuesday that a planned visit this month by Charles and Queen Camilla would go ahead despite an ongoing conflict in the Middle East which has strained transatlantic relations. On Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson announced he had asked the King to speak to a joint meeting of Congress to mark the 250th year of America’s independence. Mr Johnson said on X: “It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite His Majesty King Charles III, The King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to address a Joint Meeting of Congress. “Our two nations share one of the most consequential partnerships in history, and together we will mark the historic milestone of America’s 250th year of independence.” X This content is provided by X, which may be using cookies and other technologies. How US–UK collaboration can secure commercial fusion energy

How US–UK collaboration can secure commercial fusion energy

The Special Competitive Studies Project’s (SCSP) President, Ylli Bajraktari, and Associate Director for Fusion, Nicholas Furst, reflect on the United States’ role in the global fusion space and stress that international collaboration and co-ordination are crucial for commercial fusion energy. The global race for fusion energy began in December 2022, when researchers at the US National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved ignition for the first time. That experiment, which released more energy than was put into the target, proved that an energy-positive fusion reaction was no longer an abstraction confined to theory or simulation. Indeed, the implications extended far beyond science. The first nation to achieve commercial fusion energy will gain a concrete advantage in energy security, industrial competitiveness, and geopolitical influence. For the US, that prospect represents both a monumental opportunity and a mounting challenge. China has already moved decisively, channelling resources into fusion infrastructure, talent pipelines, and supply chains. The US, while bursting with innovation, private investment, and scientific know-how, remains hampered by misaligned budgets and ageing public facilities. If the US hopes to …
