Scientists Spot Huge Cave on Venus

RSLab / University of Trento Astronomers say they’ve spotted a vast cave lurking beneath the surface of Venus — providing the strongest evidence yet that the planet is tunneled with lava tubes. The discovery of the cave, described in a new study published in Nature Communications, adds to our understanding of how Venus was shaped by its hellish preponderance of volcanos. “Our knowledge of Venus is still limited, and until now we have never had the opportunity to directly observe processes occurring beneath the surface of Earth’s twin planet,” said coauthor Lorenzo Bruzzone at the University of Trento in a statement about the work. “The identification of a volcanic cavity is therefore of particular importance, as it allows us to validate theories that for many years have only hypothesized their existence.” Scientists have long suspected that Venus harbored lava tubes, which are also known as pyroducts. Its surface is scattered with perhaps tens of thousands of volcanoes, and is scarred with volcanic plains and lava channels. Several studies have indicated signs of recent volcanic activity …

Scientists find evidence of a massive lava tube hiding on Venus

Scientists find evidence of a massive lava tube hiding on Venus

Volcanic caves are not just an Earth thing. Scientists have spotted signs of lava tubes on the Moon and Mars. Now, researchers at the University of Trento say they have strong evidence that one exists on Venus as well, deep below its hostile surface. The discovery comes from a detailed study of radar images collected decades ago by NASA’s Magellan spacecraft. The work, funded by the Italian Space Agency, was published in the journal Nature Communications. It points to what appears to be a massive, empty lava tube beneath a collapsed pit near a Venusian volcano called Nyx Mons. Lorenzo Bruzzone led the research. He is a full professor of telecommunications and heads the Remote Sensing Laboratory at the University of Trento’s Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science. He says the finding fills a major gap in what scientists know about Earth’s closest planetary neighbor. Venus skylight in the Nyx Mons region reveals a subsurface cave, hypothesized to be a lava tube. The feature was identified through analysis of radar images acquired by the …

Radar data reveals cavernous underground lava tube on Venus

Radar data reveals cavernous underground lava tube on Venus

WASHINGTON, Feb 9 : A fresh examination of radar data for Venus obtained by NASA’s Magellan spacecraft in the 1990s indicates the presence of a large underground cavity created by a lava flow, the first subsurface feature ever detected on Earth’s planetary neighbor. Researchers said the radar data was consistent with a geological feature called a lava tube that is found in certain volcanic locations on Earth. Lava tubes also exist on the moon and are thought to be present on Mars. Venus has carefully guarded its secrets, with its surface shrouded by thick noxious clouds. But radar can peer through these clouds. Scientists had theorized the presence of lava tubes on Venus, considering its history of volcanism. “Moving from theory to direct observation marks a major step forward, opening the door to new lines of research and providing crucial information for future missions aimed at exploring the planet,” said Lorenzo Bruzzone, a radar and planetary scientist at the University of Trento in Italy, senior author of the study published on Monday in the journal …

Scientists Intrigued by Possible Hollow Structures Under Surface of Venus

Scientists Intrigued by Possible Hollow Structures Under Surface of Venus

Venus has long been known as Earth’s evil twin. While they both are roughly the same size and formed in the same inner region of the solar system, Venus is far less hospitable to life as we know it. Its surface temperatures can reach over 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Its clouds are made of sulfuric acid, and its surface atmospheric pressure is almost 100 times that of Earth, the equivalent of being 3,000 underwater. And beneath all those extreme conditions, the planet could harbor cavernous structures called lava tubes, as an international team of researchers suggests in a new paper accepted for publication in the journal Icarus. On Earth, lava tubes are the byproduct of volcanic activity that is left behind as liquid lava retreats, and are believed to exist on the Moon and Mars as well. While they may not serve as a great place to build a shelter for space travelers on Venus — the conditions are far too extreme for any human presence — the case that the planet may harbor them is …

8 ways that Venus is the Solar System’s most extreme planet

8 ways that Venus is the Solar System’s most extreme planet

As February progresses here in 2026, the brightest planet in the night sky, Venus, will begin to rise in the western skies just after sunset. Later in February, it will be joined by Mercury and Saturn, forming a triple treat for skywatchers to enjoy. Venus, as always, is a spectacular highlight. Brighter than any other star or planet in the night sky, it’s close enough that you can see it exhibit the full suite of phases from crescent to full and back again through a simple pair of binoculars or literally any telescope you can buy. Outshining all other objects in the night sky except for the Moon, every other star and planet pales in comparison to Venus as viewed from Earth, regardless of its current phase. The above photograph shows Venus next to Jupiter — the second brightest planet, shining brighter than even the brightest star in the sky — as it appeared during conjunction on March 1, 2023. At that moment, Venus appeared about five-and-a-half times brighter than Jupiter, or nearly two full …

Venus Williams reveals how she truly felt returning to tennis after debilitating health issues

Tennis icon Venus Williams returned to the courts last summer to play at the U.S. Open after facing painful health problems. She revealed how she really felt playing on that level again during her visit on The Jennifer Hudson Show. Venus put on a brave face in front of the cameras and her opponents, however, behind closed doors, she was struggling. She shared that the experience was “honestly frightening.” Jennifer in disbelief asked: “Was it? So you still get nervous?” © ShutterstockVenus got candid about her health struggles The athlete proclaimed without hesitation: “Yes, it was so stressful. I know that I can play, but it’s one thing to get out there and execute it, and then to execute it quickly without not a lot of time to get it right.” She continued: “And also, going into it, my body let me down so many times so – recovering from trauma, like when I got out there, I didn’t really believe in my body…So it makes you believe less in yourself. So I had a lot of …
