Alien civilizations have not visited Earth and never will, physicist claims

“There is a silence in the night sky that has bothered me for as long as I can remember.” That line, attributed to Richard Feynman, lands because it gets at a simple, stubborn feeling. The sky looks full. Stars crowd the darkness. It seems reasonable to think someone else should be out there, and close enough to find. Yet the deeper physicists look into the laws that govern the universe, the more that silence starts to seem less like a cosmic riddle and more like a built-in feature of reality. Human intuition is not much help. It developed for ordinary distances, daily motion, and short-term survival. It did not develop for light years, relativistic speeds, or timescales longer than the history of civilization. As Feynman puts it, “When you take that human intuition and apply it to the scale of the universe, it doesn’t just fail. It snaps.” That mismatch sits at the center of the story. Five barriers shape the quiet: distance, the speed of light, propulsion, biology, and time. Taken together, they form …

What Were the Most Visited Museums in 2025?

What Were the Most Visited Museums in 2025?

Some 200 million visitors streamed through the 100 top-attended museums around the world in 2025, according to the latest attendance ranking by the Art Newspaper. That figure is still down a bit from the 230 million who punched their tickets in 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic shut museums down for months, indicating that overall museums haven’t quite regained their footing even five years later. Many new museums in the Middle East and Asia, which are relatively new to museum-building, attracted tons of visitors, according to TAN, but so did museums in places like New York and London, already well known for their rich institutional landscape.  Related Articles Paris’s Louvre Museum continues to hold the top spot, with some 9 million visitors. Rounding out the top 10 are the Vatican Museums, the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, the British Museum in London, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, Mexico City’s National Anthropology Museum, Shanghai Museum East, Tate Modern in London, and the National Gallery in London. …

‘I visited castle in Spain then realised cost of ticket was so cheap’ | UK | News

Castillo de Colomares,Benalmádena (Image: Getty) While some travellers are happy to spend a week soaking up the sun, others prefer to dive into a destination’s history and culture. But one woman was left laughing at herself after mistaking a popular Spanish attraction for an “ancient castle” – only to discover it’s actually far more modern than it looks. Content creator Alisatata, known as @iam_alisatata on social media, shared how she paid just €3 (around £2.69) to visit Castillo de Colomares after relocating to Spain. She was immediately impressed by the intricate design of the structure, which sits in the coastal town of Benalmádena — but her amazement quickly turned to disbelief when she learned the truth behind it. Despite its grand, historic appearance, the building was actually constructed between 1987 and 1994, meaning it’s nowhere near as old as she had assumed. We visited a Birmingham area famous for awful parking – you’ll never guess what we found

We visited a Birmingham area famous for awful parking – you’ll never guess what we found

Finding the worst area for parking in Birmingham is very difficult – the truth is there are appalling examples almost wherever you turn. Would-be councillor, Shuranjeet Singh, has posted a video of one corner of the inner city with a claim to the title. Winson Green is becoming nearly as synonymous with terrible parking as it is prisons. Read more: Exclusive shock poll shows historic change for Birmingham His video shows cars hanging half off the pavement, cars parked in the middle of the road and others wrong side of the road – as well as a smattering of tickets. Shuranjeet pointed out there would be little chance of an ambulance making its way through the streets. We headed out to the area, made famous by HMP Birmingham, and found the same thing. Terribe driving is nothing new to us – we are campaigning to get more people banned for life. When we arrived, also saw pavements entirely blocked – meaning mothers with pushchairs had to go on the street to get by. -Credit:Shuranjeet Singh …

Interstellar travel is impossible and aliens haven’t visited Earth, physicists say

Interstellar travel is impossible and aliens haven’t visited Earth, physicists say

“There is a silence in the night sky that has bothered me for as long as I can remember.” Richard Feynman’s reflection lingers because it feels personal. The stars look crowded. Common sense whispers that someone else should be out there. Yet the longer physicists examine the universe, the more that silence appears less mysterious and more structural. Intuition evolved for hunting, shelter, and survival. It did not evolve to grasp light years or relativistic energy. “When you take that human intuition and apply it to the scale of the universe, it doesn’t just fail,” Feynman said. “It snaps.” Five constraints shape that quiet: distance, light speed, propulsion physics, biology, and time. Together they form what Feynman described as “absolute walls that prevent civilizations from ever meeting.” These are not temporary engineering gaps. They are consequences of how reality works. Why interstellar travel is impossible and aliens haven’t visited Earth

“There is a silence in the night sky that has bothered me for as long as I can remember.” That observation, attributed to American physicist Richard Feynman, captures a tension many people feel when they look up. The sky appears crowded with stars. Intuition suggests someone else should be out there. However, intuition evolved for survival on Earth, not for interpreting cosmic scales. “When you take that human intuition and apply it to the scale of the universe, it doesn’t just fail,” he said. “It snaps.” The deeper you look at physics, the more that silence starts to make sense. Five separate constraints, distance, light speed, energy, biology, and time, combine into what Feynman described as “absolute walls that prevent civilizations from ever meeting.” These are not merely engineering challenges. They arise from the structure of reality itself. Photo of Richard Feynman, taken in 1984 in the woods of the Robert Treat Paine Estate in Waltham, MA. Netflix CEO Sarandos visited White House before WBD offer pulled

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos arrives for meetings at the White House in Washington, Feb. 26, 2026. Andrew Harnik | Getty Images Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos visited the White House Thursday afternoon for a meeting on his company’s effort to buy part of Warner Bros. Discovery — shortly before Netflix announced it would terminate the deal. Sarandos had not been expected to meet with President Donald Trump, who days ago demanded that Netflix boot former Obama administration official Susan Rice from its board of directors “or pay the consequences.” Trump’s threat had cited a call by right-wing influencer Laura Loomer to “kill the Netflix-Warner Bros. merger now.” Loomer had pointed to Rice’s comments predicting that institutions that appease Trump will be held “accountable” when Democrats regain power. “This meeting is not with POTUS,” a White House official told CNBC. “Netflix is meeting with staff members at the White House,” the official said. After Sarandos arrived at the White House, WBD issued a statement saying that Paramount Skydance‘s new bid to buy all of the company appeared …

‘The most quietly romantic town we have ever visited’ – the enduring charm of Chiavenna, Italy | Italy holidays

‘The most quietly romantic town we have ever visited’ – the enduring charm of Chiavenna, Italy | Italy holidays

The ancient settlement of Chiavenna, in Lombardy, near Italy’s border with Switzerland, was once well known among travellers. “Lovely Chiavenna … mountain peaks, huge boulders, with rippling miniature torrents and lovely young flowers … and grassy heights with rich Spanish chestnuts,” wrote George Eliot in 1860. Eliot wasn’t the only writer to rhapsodise about this charming town. Edith Wharton described it as “fantastically picturesque … an exuberance of rococo”. For Mary Shelley it was “paradise … glowing in rich and sunny vegetation”, while Goethe described it as “like a dream”. For those pioneering travellers, gentle, sunlit Chiavenna marked their arrival in Italy, having crossed the Splügen Pass, one of the earliest transalpine routes connecting northern Europe to the south. Today, few tourists bother with Chiavenna, heading instead to the better-known Como that lies 60 miles (100km) to the south. They are missing a treat. Intrigued by the praise once heaped upon this mysterious town, with a picture-perfect location at the foot of the snow-flecked Alps, I decided to spend a week here with my husband. Surrounded by thick …

The abandoned Welsh village visited by King Charles where no-one has ever lived

The abandoned Welsh village visited by King Charles where no-one has ever lived

At first glance the streets of Coed Darcy look much like any other modern housing estate. Cars line the kerbs. Curtains twitch in upstairs windows. A few are left ajar to let fresh air drift through. It feels settled, ordinary even. Few would guess that this quietly lived-in community stands on ground once dominated by oil tanks, chimneys and heavy industry. Over 20 years ago this land formed part of the BP-owned Llandarcy Oil Refinery, the UK’s first crude oil plant. Operational from 1922 until its closure in 1997, the site lay dormant for years afterwards – a vast, polluted reminder of an industrial age left behind. In the early 2000s plans were unveiled to transform it into something radically different: a new village built on the principles of sustainability and traditional design, inspired by the then-Prince Charles’ development at Poundbury in Dorset. After years of intensive land remediation – stripping away contamination, chemicals and hazards left behind by decades of refining – construction began. Coed Darcy was envisioned as a thriving community in its …

I visited most f***ed pub in my home city – what’s happening is heartbreaking | UK | Travel

I stopped off at the Spread Eagle (Image: undefined) As you step into the Spread Eagle in Wandsworth, it’s not immediately apparent that it’s f***ed. Indeed, it appears to be a perfectly pleasant pub. The bar staff are cheerful, the Guinness is superb and the establishment is generally spotless. It’s early on a Thursday evening in January, but the punters are present in respectable numbers. A sandwich board outside promises Six Nations matches will arrive in a fortnight to lift the winter’s spirits. The Spread Eagle is the sort of pub that provides a little something for everyone. During my visit, there was a solitary gentleman reading a book whilst enjoying one of the menu’s ‘traditional pub classics’; two mothers cradling their youngsters; and a group of marketers discussing Q2 strategy. Whilst peaceful enough on a Thursday evening, I sense that the Spread Eagle transforms into quite a bustling venue on a Saturday night when the rugby enthusiasts descend. Though probably not so boisterous as to disturb the guests staying overnight in the 21 ‘eclectically’ furnished …
