Why Trump Thinks He Can Walk Away From the Strait of Hormuz

Why Trump Thinks He Can Walk Away From the Strait of Hormuz

The oil shocks of the 1970s forced traumatic austerity on Americans. Some gas stations had miles-long lines; fuel was rationed based on whether a car’s license-plate number was even or odd; the White House Christmas tree went unlit; daylight savings was imposed year-round. The fuel crisis that America’s war on Iran has unleashed is far larger—the biggest oil-supply shock in history, an estimated three times the disruption caused by the Arab oil embargo. Iran has effectively cut off the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) flowed until recently. And yet, unlike in the ’70s, America is now an energy superpower, largely insulated from the economic pain caused by its actions, which instead are now being borne by Asia and will soon reach Europe. The dynamic is like a psychology experiment played out on a global scale: America can administer shocks to other countries without feeling much pain itself. The man at the control panel is Donald Trump. The president, a lover of leverage, not only understands …

Trump is considering a ground war in Iran. Experts say he should walk away

As the Iran War stretches past its first month, time is running out for President Donald Trump to wrap up his four-to-six-week war on schedule, as he considers an unclear ground campaign that experts warn would be “very costly” in lives, money, and materiel. While the air campaign against the Islamic Republic has been largely successful in damaging Iran’s naval and missile capabilities, the regime remains in power and has withstood the U.S.-Israeli onslaught. Iran refuses to capitulate or reopen the Strait of Hormuz for most shipping traffic, while gas prices stand at $4 a gallon stateside, adding to the American public’s overwhelming opposition to the war. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked for an additional $200 billion in funding for the war, which costs roughly $11.3 billion a week, on top of a $1 trillion military budget. Trump said Wednesday that the strikes so far against Iran have been successful, positing that two to three more weeks of military operations would “bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong.” “We are on …

The economic reason Walmart workers don’t walk away from low pay

The economic reason Walmart workers don’t walk away from low pay

Excerpted from The Wage Standard: What’s Wrong in the Labor Market and How to Fix It by Arindrajit Dube. Published by Dutton. Copyright © 2026. All rights reserved. What determines the extent of employers’ wage-setting power? It boils down to how easily — borrowing Beyoncé’s phrase — you can “release your job” when pay isn’t good enough. But how simple is it for someone to quit Walmart if they are dissatisfied with their wage? To answer this question, my collaborators Suresh Naidu and Adam Reich and I surveyed about 10,000 Walmart workers in 2019 using a Facebook-based strategy, similar to the Shift Project. As we saw previously, Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer, has long been associated with low pay. In 2019, its voluntary company-wide minimum wage stood at $11 per hour, lagging behind competitors like Target and Costco. If paying jobs were truly easy to replace, one would expect Walmart jobs to be among the easier to quit and move on from, or market pressure would already have pushed Walmart wages to match those …

Want to walk entire L.A. streets? Start with Santa Monica Boulevard

Want to walk entire L.A. streets? Start with Santa Monica Boulevard

We set off from Silver Lake on a sizzling spring Sunday. Nine hours later, we reached the sand in Santa Monica. This was the fifth annual walk I’ve organized with a growing group of friends. We began in 2022 with Wilshire Boulevard, a smooth 16-mile journey. In 2023, we scaled all 25 miles of Sunset Boulevard. In 2024, we somehow walked all 28-plus miles of Western Avenue. And, last year, we stepped back to complete Pico Boulevard’s 15.5-mile length. A vote landed us on Santa Monica Boulevard for this year’s walk, held on Sunday. On that day, we were not the only ones walking Los Angeles. Our journey began at Sunset Junction, the intersection of Sunset and Santa Monica. Surprisingly, we met two friends also beginning a walk to the water there, though they were headed down Sunset. No matter what route you take, it always feels a little like magic to reach the ocean on your feet from the inland slices of Los Angeles. And Santa Monica makes for the most accessible path. If …

Jane Fonda’s Dishy Memoir Proves She Walks the Walk

Jane Fonda’s Dishy Memoir Proves She Walks the Walk

The Lone Ranger Throughout her childhood, Jane Fonda had a mantra: “Make it better. I know I can make it better.” She was born Lady Jayne Seymour Fonda—yes, her first name is literally Lady—on December 21, 1937, in New York City. An original nepo baby, she was the daughter of wealthy socialite Frances Ford Seymour and movie star Henry Fonda, whose progressive views and sensitive, everyman roles in films like The Grapes of Wrath made him an offscreen hero. Growing up in Los Angeles, tomboy Jane—tough, tireless, infinitely curious—would do anything to gain her father’s approval. “He was happy with me when I was little,” she writes, “and deep down I knew his was the winning team, the one I’d do anything to join.” But as she got older, her father’s cold, distant personality and his “Protestant rages” made him impossible to reach. Fonda mimicked him, becoming insular, self-sufficient and obsessed with perfection. Once the family moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, when Fonda was ten, the tense family situation went from bad to worse. Her mother …

The Merrell Speed Arc has the support I need to walk 8,000 steps a day—get them now for up to 50% off

It’s rare to find a shoe that is comfortable enough for walking and spending a lot of time on your feet that actually looks good. But Merrell Speed Arc Matis is that shoe. It’s an urban walking shoe with support and comfort for everyday wear. And the men’s is currently up to 50% off on Amazon, with 45% off the women’s. I’ve been wearing these shoes non-stop for the past year and they’re still in great condition. They’re my favourite pair to throw on for running errands or heading out for a walk around my local park. I’ve also taken them on a couple of city breaks, and they’re great for long days on your feet. With so many colorways available, I’m considering investing in a new pair to add to my collection. Merrell is known for making hiking and outdoor shoes, but the Speed Arc was designed as a more lightweight, everyday shoe, helping to make your daily steps more comfortable. I’ve also worn them on longer walks and found them to provide a …

Breaking up with someone can be painful and difficult. Breakups can make you depressed and even damage your heart and immune system. For that reason, being the one who says “it’s over” can be torturous, especially if you’re hurting someone you still care deeply about. Even if there’s no love lost between you, no one really enjoys being the bad guy. Although moral philosophers have not paid much attention to the end of relationships, the issue seems ripe for a consequentialist to slide in with a simple motto: to break up well, reduce suffering to a minimum! In a way, this is already the approach of many social scientists, who understand “the good divorce” as a kind of separation where suffering is mitigated for members of the relationship (and other affected parties like children and dependents). However, things are never that easy—not even for consequentialists. Even taking dependents out of the equation, breakups raise questions about moral responsibility. If I fall out of love with my partner, am I to blame for the intense emotional …
