At the Baftas, Sinners stars Lindo and Michael B Jordan were presenting an award when audience member John Davidson, a Tourette’s campaigner whose life inspired the Bafta-winning film I Swear, experienced a tic that caused him to shout the “n-word”. Davidson had been ticcing throughout the evening, with most of his outbursts removed from the televised footage. However, the BBC’s failure to edit out the slur in question – despite a two-hour delay between the ceremony and the TV broadcast – has attracted heavy criticism. Appearing at the NAACP Image Awards alongside Sinners director Ryan Coogler, Lindo acknowledged the outpouring of support he had received following the Baftas. “I’d just like to officially say, we appreciate all the support and …

Pokémon Winds and Waves confirmed as release window and starters revealed

Pokémon Winds and Waves confirmed as release window and starters revealed

After nearly four years since the last main series Pokémon games, the 10th Generation of games has now been confirmed with Pokémon Winds and Waves. Rumours about the games have been widely circulated over the last year, with details about the games – including the names – leaking in October 2025. Now, as part of the Pokémon Presents stream to celebrate Pokémon Day, and the series’ 30th anniversary, we’ve had our first look at the new games. Unsurprisingly, given the title Winds and Waves, the games appear to take place in a tropical island setting, similar to that of Pokémon Sun and Moon. The player is shown travelling through jungle areas, beaches, marshland, and even what appears to be inside a volcano. Pokémon Winds and Waves will be the first 10th Generation Pokémon games. The Pokémon Company Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the trailer is the reveal of the three new starter Pokémon: Browt, a Grass-type bird with large, leafy eyebrows; Pombon, a Fire-type dog similar to a Pomeranian; and Gecqua, a Water-type lizard. Scientists map the brain waves behind the intense effects of ayahuasca

Scientists map the brain waves behind the intense effects of ayahuasca

A recent study has revealed how the psychedelic brew ayahuasca alters brain waves to induce profound mystical experiences and vivid, spontaneous thoughts. By recording electrical brain activity before and during the substance’s active phase, researchers discovered that a person’s resting brain state can predict how intensely they will feel certain bodily and emotional changes. The research was published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. Ayahuasca is a plant-based beverage containing psychoactive compounds, primarily dimethyltryptamine, or DMT. It has been used for centuries in South American traditional practices to induce altered states of consciousness. Recently, medical professionals have investigated the brew as a potential treatment for severe depression, a condition that affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Because the substance produces powerful alterations in human perception, mental health practitioners want to understand exactly how it works on a biological level. They also want to know whether they can anticipate a patient’s psychological reaction before a clinical session begins. Predicting a patient’s response could help doctors tailor treatments and ensure a safe therapeutic environment. Researchers Natan Silva-Costa …

What brain waves tell us about the link between exercise and mood

What brain waves tell us about the link between exercise and mood

A study in Germany found that a 30-minute session of moderate-intensity physical exercise reduced rumination in depressed individuals compared to sitting. The reduction was visible in both electroencephalographic recordings and self-reports. The research was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. Depression is a mental health condition characterized by persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure, and impairments in emotional, cognitive, and physical functioning. It affects how people think, feel, and behave, interfering with daily life, work, and relationships. Common symptoms include sadness, fatigue, sleep and appetite disturbances, reduced concentration, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness. One of the core cognitive symptoms of depression is rumination. Rumination is a cognitive process that involves repetitive and passive focus on one’s distress and its possible causes and consequences. However, rather than leading to problem solving, rumination tends to amplify negative mood and prolong depressive episodes without resolving the problem. People who ruminate typically dwell on past failures, perceived flaws, or unanswered “why” questions about their suffering. This repetitive thinking can increase emotional distress and make it …

Radio waves could help driverless cars see around corners

Radio waves could help driverless cars see around corners

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. In late January, an Alphabet-owned Waymo self-driving car was cruising near an elementary school in Santa Monica, California, when a young child suddenly darted into the street. Waymo’s LiDAR sensors detected the student, who had just emerged from behind a parked SUV, but it was too late. Despite slamming on the brakes and slowing from 17 to six mph, the driverless car struck the child, knocking them to the pavement. Luckily, reports show that the child only suffered minor injuries, but that’s likely little comfort to parents whose children live in the growing number of cities where driverless cars operate. In this case, the Waymo detected the child once they came into view—but what if it could have “seen” them from around the corner? That is the general idea behind new research emerging out of the University of Pennsylvania, where a team of engineers have developed a sensor system that uses radio waves to help robots detect objects (or …

Prince Harry is at home on the waves in impressive new surfing video

Prince Harry could have passed for a native Californian as he featured in a new video posted by his surfing instructor. The Duke of Sussex was seen on the waves near his home in Montecito with Meghan Markle and their two children, in the clip which was posted on Instagram on 31 January by surf coach Raimana Van Bastolaer.  The 41-year-old son of King Charles was seen wearing a black wetsuit-style top and swimming trunks as he navigated the waves with ease, first in a crouched position before standing confidently. Raimana rode on a separate surf board alongside him, putting his hand out to support Harry. “Cannot stop you, my brother, for having a good time,” the coach penned on social media. Harry’s passion for surfing Harry reportedly began taking surfing lessons in 2020 upon moving to California, when his wife purchased the lesson as a gift on his 36th birthday. He has since taken to the sport like a pro and has been filmed surfing at Kelly Slater’s professional Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California. Harry …

Iran’s protests come after waves of unrest, spanning years

Three weeks of large-scale protests in Iran, met with a deadly government crackdown, have pushed the country into crisis on a scale rarely seen since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Triggered by worsening economic conditions and a collapse of the Iranian riyal, the protests swiftly evolved to encompass diverse streams of discontent, including widespread calls for an end to the Islamic Republic. ‘Waves break right on to the bus windscreen’: a car-free trip along County Antrim’s dramatic coast | Northern Ireland holidays

‘Waves break right on to the bus windscreen’: a car-free trip along County Antrim’s dramatic coast | Northern Ireland holidays

Oystercatchers fly off as I step through stalks of storm-racked kelp for an icy dip in the winter-grey sea. Actually, the water feels unexpectedly warm, perhaps in contrast to the freezing wind. But it’s cold enough to do its job: every nerve is singing and I feel euphoric. I’m exploring the Antrim coast, which has some of the UK’s finest beaches, and proves excellent for a sustainable break – even in the stormy depths of winter.
