Spurs finally win a match – but remain in Premier League relegation zone

Spurs finally win a match – but remain in Premier League relegation zone

It is a very significant day at the bottom of the Premier League where the battle to avoid relegation now looks like a two-way scrap between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur. Nottingham Forest are eight points clear of the bottom three after their eye-catching 5-0 victory at Sunderland on Friday night.  Spurs’ trip to relegated Wolves this afternoon is simply a must-win for Roberto De Zerbi and his players. There were signs of competency in performances against Sunderland and Brighton, but they could only claim one point from a possible six. If Spurs fall four or five points behind West Ham, who host Everton, relegation would go from a perilous possibility to a near certainty. Wolves have taken points off Aston Villa, Arsenal and Liverpool at Molineux this calendar year, so they can be slippery opponents, and Spurs are winless in the league in 2026. “I don’t want to put pressure but we have to know the situation, we can’t forget the table and that we need to win, and maybe what we have …

West Ham hold on for precious point at Crystal Palace as Wolves relegated

West Ham hold on for precious point at Crystal Palace as Wolves relegated

The Wales winger passed up a great opportunity by heading Tyrick Mitchell’s cross wide while unmarked from 10 yards out. Johnson, booked for hacking El Hadji Malick Diouf down soon after, curled a much better effort marginally wide as West Ham continued to live dangerously. Axel Disasi thumped a reply over on the turn but was offside anyway, and a much better chance came their way six minutes before the break. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who had been a prominent partier in Italy, mistimed a punch that fell to Castellanos, whose overhead-kick was prevented from going in by Lacroix. The England keeper soon made amends with a superb stop to keep out Konstantinos Mavropanos’s header.  Jarrod Bowen saw Hughes block a shot early in the second half that, judging by his reaction, the England man had expected to see flying into the top corner. Bowen attempted an overhead kick soon after but that was blocked. West Ham soon had to repel a barrage of corners after Johnson, causing problems on the right, sent in dangerous centres. …

Leeds and West Ham deliver ludicrous Cup tie free from Premier League constraints

Leeds and West Ham deliver ludicrous Cup tie free from Premier League constraints

We are back after Saturday’s goalfest in the FA Cup quarter-finals and this afternoon West Ham take on Leeds United at the London Stadium. It is a draw which raises the question of whether both teams can put their Premier League predicament aside in the hope of a Wembley trip for their fans. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side come into the match having drawn six of their last eight games in 90 minutes across all competitions. Despite this new-found consistency, a lacklustre performance in their last outing against Aston Villa cost them crucial ground in the relegation battle, with Nottingham Forest moving three points clear with their win at Spurs. At home, West Ham have not lost a game at in the last three months. Posing as a tricky side to defeat in front of their home crowd, they strive to keep this cup run alive and reach their first FA Cup semi-final since they finished runners-up in 2006. Twenty years on, this competition has been something to savour for the London side this year, despite …

Captain fantastic John McGinn revives Aston Villa’s stuttering season

Captain fantastic John McGinn revives Aston Villa’s stuttering season

Fourth-placed Villa now hold a six-point lead over Chelsea in sixth place after McGinn helped the club strengthen their grip on a Champions League place with his seventh goal of the campaign in all competitions. McGinn made way for Youri Tielemans shortly before Villa’s second goal in another boost to the club’s Champions League hopes as the Belgian returned to the pitch for the first time in almost two months. However, Villa manager Emery still wants more from McGinn, who he has challenged to reach double figures for goals and assists. Emery said: “With John McGinn, half of his challenge was to up his numbers. Two years ago I told him at the beginning of the season that you are not adding numbers for the team. “We want close to 10 goals and 10 assists, I said if he reaches those numbers we will achieve our objectives. “He’s now adding numbers and with those numbers we can keep our position in the table. “He is versatile, he’s played fantastic on the left side during the …

Man City look ready to concede title as West Ham exit drop zone

Man City look ready to concede title as West Ham exit drop zone

“We could be better,” Guardiola said. “We could be more aggressive in the first half – better control maybe. In the end we need creativity: the cross, the shot, the dribble and we are struggling a bit this season. Something changed, Savinho’s [missed] chance [against Real Madrid], Marc this time. “But it’s not easy: defences in a low block, the transitions teams have. Madrid are more dangerous than West Ham on transition. On set-pieces, Nuno is a master. What can I say to the team? They did everything. They had 21 shots. We have to be better in the final third – that’s all. It has happened many times this season.” The City goal that had briefly given them the lead in the 31st minute was a miscued cross from Bernardo Silva and for all the star quality later unleashed on West Ham there was not much more. Haaland missed a couple of chances, including a ball pushed through the West Ham back line by the substitute Rayan Cherki, who was the game’s silkiest performer. …

Liverpool’s transformation into set-piece kings puts West Ham to sword

Liverpool’s transformation into set-piece kings puts West Ham to sword

Where once this was a Liverpool team who were the Premier League’s worst performing from set-pieces, there has been a radical transformation since the turn of the year that has put them among the very best. The first three goals against West Ham were all the direct result of corners and, in the case of Cody Gakpo’s fourth, one that was recycled soon after. Arne Slot’s players still struggle to defend them, but in this case they could rely on West Ham being even more erratic than the home team when it came to getting organised. Liverpool are still making mistakes – just not as many as this opponent. It would be unfair to blame the early-season form on the departure of coach Aaron Briggs, formerly responsible for Liverpool set-pieces – but something has changed. A fourth straight win since the defeat by Manchester City on February 8 takes Liverpool level on points with fourth-placed Manchester United, but it was still an anxious afternoon at Anfield for much of it. Nuno Espírito Santo’s team had …

Benjamin Sesko breaks West Ham hearts with late Man Utd equaliser

Benjamin Sesko breaks West Ham hearts with late Man Utd equaliser

Michael Carrick joked the viral fan hoping for a long-awaited haircut will not be making it into his team talk as Manchester United head to West Ham looking for a fifth straight Premier League win. Frank Ilett has racked up more than two million social media followers since pledging in October 2024 to grow his hair until the Red Devils secured five victories in a row. Erik ten Hag was in charge at the start of a challenge that could end after nearly 500 days if Carrick can continue his winning record since succeeding Ruben Amorim by beating his former club West Ham on Tuesday. The former midfielder has not been keeping a close eye on the viral stunt but learned about “The United Strand” through his children. “I can say I’m aware of it, yeah,” Carrick said with a smile. “My kids have made me aware of it, if anything, but it certainly won’t go into the team talk from a professional level. “I can understand what’s going on with it and it does …

Fernandez completes dramatic Chelsea comeback against West Ham as Rosenior gets it right in the end

Fernandez completes dramatic Chelsea comeback against West Ham as Rosenior gets it right in the end

West Ham have won just once in their last 19 Premier League visits to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea strong favourites to continue their promising start to life under Liam Rosenior. Chelsea’s head coach would become just the fourth Englishman to win his first three Premier League games as a manager, and a victory would take Rosenior’s side above Manchester United in fourth. West Ham looked well and truly doomed after the home defeat by Nottingham Forest, but have staged an unlikely revival with back-to-back wins against Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland. Nuno Espirito Santo appears to have concluded that attack is the best form of defence, with January signings Pablo and Taty Castellanos flanked by Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville. This London derby has a rich history, including within the Rosenior family. Liam’s dad Leroy was red carded in a game between the teams at West Ham’s former Upton Park home in May 1988 when, having already scored twice, he grabbed the throat of Chelsea’s Steve Clarke. “I was there,” said Rosenior. “I know what it …

Granit Xhaka involved in fiery exchanges with West Ham fans

West Ham are unchanged from their last minute 2-1 victory away at Tottenham, but midfielder Lucas Paqueta is absent from the squad, with the 28-year old Brazil international the subject of interest from Brazilian side Flamengo, amid a potential departure from the London Stadium. West Ham United: Areola, Wan-Bissaka, Mavropanos, Todibo, Scarles, Bowen, Soucek, Fernandes, Summerville, Pablo Felipe, Castellanos.Subs: Hermansen, Walker-Peters, Kilman, Ward-Prowse, Wilson, Diouf, Magassa, Potts, Kante.
