Thomas Frank future in doubt after ‘disaster’ Tottenham defeat

Thomas Frank future in doubt after ‘disaster’ Tottenham defeat

Hello and welcome to coverage from the Premier League’s 3pm matches. Under-fire Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is well aware of the need to win over the club’s disgruntled fans and knows victories are the key. Spurs host a side on Saturday whose head coach is equally feeling the heat in Nuno Espirito Santo’s relegation-threatened West Ham. Fan group Change for Tottenham will protest before West Ham’s visit, but Frank’s future looks secure for now, with chief executive Vinai Venkatesham firmly behind the Danish coach, who this week welcomed Conor Gallagher’s arrival in a £34.7mdeal. “Of course it’s important, it’s very important (because) connecting is key,” said Frank, whose side are 14th in the Premier League. “I think I’m quite good at connecting with people, actually, so that’s one thing, but I also know in football there is one way of connecting and that is winning. “So, when we start winning enough and we also start creating even more chances than we have done, which I’m not in doubt of – there is sign in the …

Scores and latest updates including West Ham vs QPR

Good morning and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live, minute-by-minute clockwatch for the FA Cup third round, with eight matches taking place throughout the day.  Sunday’s action begins at Pride Park at 12:00, with Derby County of the Championship looking for their first win at this stage of the competition in three years as they host a resurgent Leeds United.  Farke’s side, who did the double over Derby in the second tier last season, enjoyed a seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier League in recent weeks, inspired by the in-form Dominic Calvert Lewin, before being denied a point at St James’ Park on Wednesday by Harvey Barnes’ 112th-minute winner.  Both teams have one FA Cup title to their name, but it’s been 54 years since Leeds lifted the trophy, while Derby have not tasted glory in the competition since 1946.  Premier League leaders and 14-time FA Cup winners Arsenal make the trip to Fratton Park at 14:00 to face Championship strugglers Portsmouth, who lifted the trophy in 2008 under Harry Redknapp.  The FA Cup is the only …

West Ham left staring into the abyss after Gibbs-White gives Forest lifeline

West Ham left staring into the abyss after Gibbs-White gives Forest lifeline

Happy new year is an expression of irony rather than good cheer if you are a West Ham United supporter, and tonight’s fixture against Nottingham Forest could plunge them into ever darker depths of despondency. The London club are four points adrift of Forest, the team above them just outside the relegation zone, after what Nuno Espirito Santo described as an “embarrassing” performance in defeat at his former club Wolves. There is another reunion for Nuno this evening against Forest, who sacked him in September just a few months after he guided them to European qualification. Much like the departures of Enzo Maresca and Ruben Amorim in the last week, that decision was driven by internal politics as much as results. Speaking of which, John Percy reports that Edu, Forest’s global head of football, is coming under pressure amid the club’s turbulent season. West Ham are quite fortunate that Forest have not pulled further clear of trouble. After an encouraging start under Sean Dyche, which included a 3-0 victory at Anfield, Forest lost four league …

West Ham in danger of being cut adrift after Fulham’s late winner

West Ham in danger of being cut adrift after Fulham’s late winner

There was little festive good cheer in the air and West Ham supporters held up red cards, chanting “sack the board” in the latest protest against owner David Sullivan and vice-chair Karren Brady. On the pitch, West Ham have won only two matches at home this season, lost their last six London derbies and have taken a mere three points from their last seven games, true relegation form. Jiménez, who scored Fulham’s winner against Forest before Christmas which lifted them well clear of any imminent danger, had their first chance but curled his effort wide. Moments later, Harry Wilson let fly from 20 yards, forcing Alphonse Areola to dive at full stretch to tip the ball over. West Ham briefly threatened when Mateus Fernandes threaded the ball to Jarrod Bowen, whose angled shot was saved by Bernd Leno. Then Kyle Walker-Peters sent Crysencio Summerville to the byline, and his cross was headed narrowly wide by Ollie Scarles. Summerville had a volley deflected wide from a Freddie Potts corner before, at the other end, Areola had …

If this is Pep Guardiola’s last season at Man City, he looks hell-bent on ending with a bang

If this is Pep Guardiola’s last season at Man City, he looks hell-bent on ending with a bang

An uncompromising Guardiola has warned his players they will not challenge for the Premier League title unless they improve. Despite an eighth successive home league win, Guardiola was still unhappy and, in an impassioned address, told his players that their positional play would have to get better if they are serious about winning a seventh title in 10 seasons. “The way we play with the ball we have to improve, otherwise it will not be enough to arrive in March, April to be contenders to win the title,” the City manager said. “I want to be honest with myself. I said to the players, ‘So Merry Christmas for everyone’. But it will not be enough if we don’t improve. “Defensively we are improving. We are visualising it with the ball. But the way you attack depends on how the opponents defend and you have to be in the right spots and positions to be more fluid, and we were not.  “Don’t misunderstand me, I am delighted, happy and these guys are top, they follow us …
