Spurs finally win a match – but remain in Premier League relegation zone

It is a very significant day at the bottom of the Premier League where the battle to avoid relegation now looks like a two-way scrap between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur. Nottingham Forest are eight points clear of the bottom three after their eye-catching 5-0 victory at Sunderland on Friday night.  Spurs’ trip to relegated Wolves this afternoon is simply a must-win for Roberto De Zerbi and his players. There were signs of competency in performances against Sunderland and Brighton, but they could only claim one point from a possible six. If Spurs fall four or five points behind West Ham, who host Everton, relegation would go from a perilous possibility to a near certainty. Wolves have taken points off Aston Villa, Arsenal and Liverpool at Molineux this calendar year, so they can be slippery opponents, and Spurs are winless in the league in 2026. “I don’t want to put pressure but we have to know the situation, we can’t forget the table and that we need to win, and maybe what we have …

West Ham hold on for precious point at Crystal Palace as Wolves relegated

West Ham hold on for precious point at Crystal Palace as Wolves relegated

The Wales winger passed up a great opportunity by heading Tyrick Mitchell’s cross wide while unmarked from 10 yards out. Johnson, booked for hacking El Hadji Malick Diouf down soon after, curled a much better effort marginally wide as West Ham continued to live dangerously. Axel Disasi thumped a reply over on the turn but was offside anyway, and a much better chance came their way six minutes before the break. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who had been a prominent partier in Italy, mistimed a punch that fell to Castellanos, whose overhead-kick was prevented from going in by Lacroix. The England keeper soon made amends with a superb stop to keep out Konstantinos Mavropanos’s header.  Jarrod Bowen saw Hughes block a shot early in the second half that, judging by his reaction, the England man had expected to see flying into the top corner. Bowen attempted an overhead kick soon after but that was blocked. West Ham soon had to repel a barrage of corners after Johnson, causing problems on the right, sent in dangerous centres. …

Liverpool’s old guard and academy talent help right wrongs at Wolves

Liverpool’s old guard and academy talent help right wrongs at Wolves

Liverpool spent more than £450m last summer to rebuild their team, but this was an evening for the elder statesmen and home-grown talent of the club. Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, with their Premier League titles and Champions League winners’ medals, booked a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Curtis Jones, from the club’s academy, also scored. All three have attracted interest from other clubs, and their position as regular starters was not guaranteed after the signings made before the campaign. Salah turned on Arne Slot and the club after losing his place, Tottenham made a bid for Robertson in January and Jones has been on the wanted list of several clubs. With none of the summer signings starting, those three shone at Molineux along with 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, also from the academy. Despite a crisis at Anfield in their title defence this season, they are now just one win away from a trip to Wembley. How Liverpool fans would love another two trips to the national stadium and to win a trophy in such …

Six errors that led to Liverpool’s defeat by Wolves

Six errors that led to Liverpool’s defeat by Wolves

Virgil van Dijk described the performance as “predictable” and said that his manager had a few choice words for the team afterwards. “Yeah he was angry. Of course,” Van Dijk said. “He had every right because we played poorly. “That was already the case in the first half. In the second half, maybe there was more urgency, but it still wasn’t good enough. “He had every right to be angry. We have to pretty quickly turn this into full focus on Friday [against Wolves in the FA Cup]. That’s our responsibility, physically and mentally.” Telegraph Sport examines the six fundamental errors that were made by Slot’s side at Molineux. Lack of intensity Liverpool barely created a chance in the first half, which was one of the more uneventful halves of the entire Premier League campaign. Slot’s team had plenty of possession before the break but they produced nothing of note in the final third. Jeremie Frimpong’s wild strike over the crossbar, and Mohamed Salah’s inability to convert an early opportunity created by Van Dijk, summarised …

Aston Villa’s season threatens to unravel as Ezri Konsa argues with fans

Aston Villa’s season threatens to unravel as Ezri Konsa argues with fans

Hello and welcome to coverage from the Premier League of Wolves vs Aston Villa. The two sides will start the match with very different objectives, one desperately trying to pick up points to avoid the inevitable, while the other attempts to keep the league’s big beasts behind them in the race for Champions League football next season. Wolves welcome Villa to Molineux – the first of three home games in the space of a week. Liverpool are visitors on Tuesday, and again in the FA Cup next Friday. And manager Rob Edwards says it is time for his players to lift themselves for the fight. Edwards said: “We’re here to fight and show how good we are. The players have always got something to fight for, these next three games in particular, and they shouldn’t be difficult to get up for at all. “We understand the scale of the task and we know we’re not going to be favourite in any of the games, but we’ve got to make sure that we bring our best.” …

Eddie Howe has a Nick Woltemade problem after anonymous Wolves performance

Eddie Howe has a Nick Woltemade problem after anonymous Wolves performance

Bottom-of-the-league Wolves welcome Newcastle to Molineux. Eddie Howe’s men won the reverse fixture at St James’ Park back in September with Nick Woltemade scoring the only goal of the game. The omens would seem to not be in the favour of the hosts; Wolves have won just two of their 21 Premier League games against Newcastle. Wolves enter the game bottom of the table, 15 points from safety, but are unbeaten in their last three league games. With Wolves’ status in the Premier League under huge threat, a number of their players are being linked with moves away in this window, including Jorgen Strand Larsen, Joao Gomes and Emmanuel Agbadou. Rob Edwards has been asked about the challenge of the January transfer window. “If certain players are to go, we dictate that, then, we will look at where we can add,” Edwards said. “We are always thinking about the jigsaw puzzle and making sure we have a good balance when the window closes. There are a lot of lads around who want to right some …

Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd produce painful watch to end year feebly

Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd produce painful watch to end year feebly

His double save to deny first Krejci and then Mosquera, scooping the ball away from the defender just as he was about to tap it in, was critical. Patrick Dorgu had the ball in the net late on but was correctly ruled offside. This was not the way Amorim would have wanted to bring in the new year. Amorim frustrated by ‘lack of fluidity and quality’ Ruben Amorim bemoaned Man Utd’s lack of creativity and quality after being booed off at Old Trafford. Boos greeted the half-time and full-time whistles and Amorim’s second half substitutions were jeered as Wolves ended a run of 11 successive defeats with a deserved point. “We struggled in all the game,” said Amorim, who was missing eight senior players due to injury and the Africa Cup of Nations. “We had lack of fluidity and then a lack of quality and then a lack of creation of chances. And then we suffered a goal with set-pieces – and we are [a] tall [team] in this moment. So these details are important …
