Family of woman who died after falling into scalding, uncovered NYC manhole files lawsuit

Con Edison’s “careless, grossly negligent, reckless, wanton and willful” disregard for safety caused the death of Donike “Donna” Gocaj, her family said in the lawsuit filed Thursday. Gocaj, 56, had parked her car in midtown Manhattan on May 18 and was headed to her job as an overnight cleaner when she stepped out of her vehicle and into the uncovered manhole near East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue, police said. ConEd was responsible for keeping that opening covered and safe from anyone possibly falling into it, according to a lawsuit filed by Gocaj’s estate. The manhole was “open, uncovered, unguarded, unbarricaded and unprotected, without any warning, barrier, cone, light, signage or other safeguard of any kind,” said the New York County civil complaint. Japan imperial rules tweaked but still no woman emperor

Japan imperial rules tweaked but still no woman emperor

TOKYO: Japan’s parliament enacted changes to the imperial succession law on Friday (Jul 17) but maintained the bar on a woman becoming emperor despite surveys suggesting wide public support for the idea. The future of the imperial household – mythically descended from the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu – hinges currently on Prince Hisahito, the 19-year-old nephew of serving Emperor Naruhito, 66. If Hisahito – barely out of school and currently studying biology and insects and who is not married – has no son, then under the rules as they stand he will have no heir and the bloodline will end. The Bill, passed by a large majority by the Upper House on Friday, allows the adoption of male distant relatives over 15 back into the imperial family – as long as they are single. It also lets women keep their royal status after marrying a commoner, something which is already allowed for men. Japan’s Imperial Household Law, in place since 1947, does not allow women to ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne, and the right to the …

He’s a self-admitted player who hooks up with a woman at every stop. This time, a Japanese marriage broker arranges for him to wed a beautiful, young Japanese woman. The contract is as easy to break as it is to sign, and he sings about maybe falling in love but definitely falling in lust with his new young bride, and knowing that his real marriage will one day be to an American woman. The bride, Cio-Cio San, aka Madame Butterfly, is reluctant to …
