Duffy said 7,252 of those applicants met basic qualifications, though they would still need to go through a rigorous assessment process. “We’ve had a flood of young people coming in who want to be air traffic controllers,” Duffy said at the conference, calling the Trump …

Inclusion promise rests on a workforce DfE can’t count

Inclusion promise rests on a workforce DfE can’t count

The schools white paper’s “experts at hand” scheme is the largest overhaul of school inclusion in a decade. By the end of 2028-29, every primary school is to receive around 40 days of expert support a year, and every secondary around 160, through a £1.8 billion service built around educational psychologists (EPs) and speech and language therapists, alongside wider specialist support. The ambition is right, but a core part of the workforce who will deliver the ambition – educational psychologists – is one the Department for Education (DfE) cannot currently see, count or grow fast enough to deliver on that date. Educational psychologists are already stretched thin, unevenly distributed and partly invisible to the department now trying to expand their numbers. Three problems, set out in our new EPI report for the British Psychological Society, go unaddressed in the white paper. These issues will determine whether experts at hand works. The timeline does not fit Training an educational psychologist takes a three-year doctorate. The cohort beginning in September 2026 will not qualify until 2029, the …

Tesla’s Texas factory workforce reportedly shrunk 22% in 2025

Tesla’s Texas factory workforce reportedly shrunk 22% in 2025

The total workforce at Tesla’s factory outside Austin, Texas shrunk dramatically last year as the company suffered its second straight year of declining sales, according to a compliance report spotted by Austin American-Statesman. Tesla went from employing 21,191 people at the factory in 2024 to 16,506 workers in 2025, a drop of 22%. That’s despite the company’s global workforce growing from 125,665 employees in 2024 to 134,785 employees in 2025, according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. It’s not clear which teams were most affected by Tesla scaling back its workforce at the plant. But the company has become one of the largest employers in the Austin area since it opened the factory in 2022. CEO Elon Musk also relocated Tesla’s headquarters to the factory in 2021 before it opened. The company has invested more than $6.3 billion in the facility to date, according to the new report. Trump Proposes to Begin Privatizing TSA Screening Operations

Trump Proposes to Begin Privatizing TSA Screening Operations

WASHINGTON, April 3 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Friday proposed to begin privatizing airport security operations handled by the Transportation Security Administration, in an effort to save money. The White House budget proposes cutting funding for the federal agency created after the September 11, 2001 ‌attacks by $52 million and would require ‌small airports to enroll in a program in which TSA pays for private screeners. TSA has about 50,000 federal employees who handle screening at nearly all U.S. airports. Budget documents released on Friday said airports currently using the privatization program have demonstrated savings compared to federal screening operations. In recent weeks, major U.S. airports suffered massive disruptions after TSA security officers went unpaid since mid-February after funding for the workers was halted in a budget dispute. The standoff in Congress led to daily absences of 10% or more of TSA workers and brought chaos and long security lines to U.S. airports. The agency said on Monday the absence rate fell to 8.6% after the security officers were finally paid. Privatization could help remove TSA …

US Airport Security Absences Decline Slightly as Shutdown Continues

US Airport Security Absences Decline Slightly as Shutdown Continues

WASHINGTON, March 18 (Reuters) – Absences by Transportation Security Administration security officers at airports fell slightly on Tuesday to 9.9% as a partial government shutdown hit its 33rd day and long lines were reported at a number of major airports, the government said on Wednesday. The ‌funding standoff has forced 50,000 Transportation ‌Security Administration airport security officers to work without pay for the last month, and since Sunday around 10% of them are failing to show for work daily.  On Tuesday, around 30% of TSA officers did not show up at New York JFK, Pittsburgh and Houston Bush and 40% at Houston Hobby, the Homeland Security Department said. The partial government shutdown has disrupted travel at times and prompted CEOs of the nation’s largest airlines to call for a quick end as spring break travel is in full swing. Typically, under 2% of TSA workers call in sick or do not report to work, DHS said, and hit a high of 10.2% on Tuesday. Some airports have closed a number of security checkpoints and others …
