Auckland edge Sydney 1-0 to become New Zealand’s first A-League champions

Auckland edge Sydney 1-0 to become New Zealand’s first A-League champions

May 23 : Cameron Howieson struck in the second half with a touch of fortune as Auckland FC beat Sydney 1-0 in the Grand Final on Saturday and became the first New Zealand team to clinch an A-League championship. Scoring his first goal for Auckland in his 58th match, midfielder Howieson’s 60th-minute volley from well outside the area took a deflection before fizzing past wrong-footed goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares. That was all the hosts needed to secure the trophy in their second season, sending most of a sold-out crowd of 28,374 at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium into ecstasy. “I’m so stoked. This was our goal from the start of the season. And we’re here and we’ve done it,” said Auckland forward Jesse Randall. “I’m so proud of all the boys and the staff, we’ve put so much work into this.” Auckland joined a select group of cross-border winners in world soccer, emulating AS Monaco, who have won eight titles in France’s Ligue 1 and Northern Ireland’s Derry City, twice league winners in the Republic of Ireland. They …

Do look up: stargazing in New Zealand’s first dark sky community | New Zealand holidays

Do look up: stargazing in New Zealand’s first dark sky community | New Zealand holidays

As the last strip of pink on the horizon fades to indigo on the Maniototo Plain in Otago, every word I speak arrives in a puff of condensation. Six hundred metres above sea level, in winter the temperature here can drop to -15C. Spring isn’t much warmer. But the chill is worth it. Standing in the dark in what feels like the middle of nowhere, I’ve come to a paddock not far from the historic mining town of Naseby to stargaze. Even in a country where there’s about 20km of space per person, the Maniototo Plain is sparsely populated. During the 1860s gold rush about 20,000 fortune seekers descended on Otago, but when they eventually moved on, towns like Naseby were left to a sleepy future. Now home to just 140 people, it’s not even a place you drive through. “We’re not on the way to anywhere,” says local Jill Wolff. “You’ve got to choose to go to Naseby.” A visiting US astronomer, impressed by Naseby’s sky, inspired the town to preserve it. New Zealand’s kiwi bird returns to Wellington hills after a century-long absence

New Zealand’s kiwi bird returns to Wellington hills after a century-long absence

The kiwi, New Zealand’s sacred national bird, vanished from the hills around Wellington more than a century ago. Now the capital’s residents are waging an unlikely citizen campaign to return the endangered flightless birds to the city. “They are a part of who we are and our sense of belonging here,” said Paul Ward, founder of the Capital Kiwi Project, a charitable trust. “But they’ve been gone from these hills for well over a century and we decided as Wellingtonians that wasn’t right.” A staff member of a conservation organisation carries a kiwi bird during an event at Parliament in Wellington, New Zealand, on April 28, 2026. © Charlotte Graham-McLay, AP On a hill wreathed in mist above the dark sea that runs between New Zealand’s North and South Islands, Ward and others crossed rugged farmland late on Tuesday night, carrying seven crates in silence by dim red torchlight. Inside each one nestled a kiwi, including the 250th bird relocated to Wellington since the Capital Kiwi Project began. The kiwi gives New Zealanders the name …

New Zealand’s Santner out for a month with shoulder injury

New Zealand’s Santner out for a month with shoulder injury

May 1 : Mitchell Santner has been sidelined for a month by an injury to his left shoulder, New Zealand’s cricket board (NZC) announced on Friday.  Santner sustained the injury while fielding for the Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League (IPL) defeat to Chennai Super Kings by 103 runs last week.   The all-rounder was assessed by a specialist on Friday after returning to New Zealand and was advised to undergo at least a month of rest and rehabilitation. The 34-year-old will miss a one-off test against Ireland and the opening test of a three-match tour of England starting on June 4. New Zealand Cricket said his availability for the second and third tests would be evaluated at a later date. Santner was replaced by South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj in the Mumbai Indians squad. Source link
