What to know about California’s new ‘Zone Zero’ fire-safety proposal

What to know about California’s new ‘Zone Zero’ fire-safety proposal

After years of heated debates among fire officials, scientists and local advocates, California’s Board of Forestry and Fire Protection released new proposed landscaping rules for fire-prone areas Friday that outline what residents can and can’t do within the first five feet of their homes. Many of these proposed rules — designed to reduce the risk of a home burning down amid a wildfire — have wide support (or at least acceptance); however, the most contentious by far has been whether the state would allow healthy plants in the zone. Many fire officials and safety advocates have essentially argued anything that can burn, will burn and have supported removing virtually anything capable of combustion from this zone within five feet of houses, dubbed “Zone Zero.” They point to the string of devastating urban wildfires in recent years as reason to move quickly. Yet, researchers who study the array of benefits shade and extra foliage can bring to neighborhoods — and local advocates who are worried about the money and labor needed to comply with the regulations …

Russia mysteriously closes off Arctic waters for ‘missile landing zone’ near NATO border | World | News

Russia has warned ships and aircraft to avoid large areas of the Barents Sea off northern Norway, designating them as “impact areas for Russian missiles” ahead of a planned space launch. The zones — north of Varanger and northeast of Bear Island — will remain restricted until April 30, in an unusually long safety notice for the region. Despite the alarming wording, the “missile” reference is apparently Russian terminology for rocket launches, where discarded parts of a space rocket are formally classified as falling “missile elements.” In this case, the warning relates to a Soyuz-2-1b launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, likely around April 23. As the rocket ascends, large metal structures known as payload fairings are jettisoned and fall back to Earth and two such components are expected to splash down in the designated areas. The alerts were issued through both aviation and maritime safety systems, advising seafarers to steer clear of the zones during the window. The mission is expected to carry a batch of Rassvet broadband satellites, part of Vladimir Putin’s push to …

Israel is building a buffer zone inside Lebanon : NPR

Israel is creating a large buffer zone in southern Lebanon for a prolonged military occupation, with low expectations that direct talks with Lebanon will lead to quick action on disarming Hezbollah. MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST: Israel and Lebanon held historic talks today in Washington. They’re seeking a diplomatic resolution to Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah. But on the ground, Israel is expanding its occupation of southern Lebanon, maybe for years to come, as NPR’s Daniel Estrin reports from Tel Aviv. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED SOLDIER: (Speaking Hebrew). UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: (Speaking Hebrew). DANIEL ESTRIN, BYLINE: Soldiers cheered crossing the border from northern Israel into southern Lebanon a few weeks ago. The Israeli military posted these morale-boosting videos on Instagram. Tottenham mired in relegation zone after defeat at Sunderland

SUNDERLAND, England, April 12 : Tottenham Hotspur’s relegation fears deepened as manager Roberto de Zerbi’s first game in charge ended in a 1-0 defeat by Sunderland that left the London club third-bottom of the Premier League on Sunday. It was a familiar tale of woe for Tottenham as Nordi Mukiele’s wickedly deflected shot just past the hour mark sealed their fate and gave Sunderland a deserved win that boosted their European ambitions. Tottenham showed battling spirit but not a great deal of attacking quality as their winless league run stretched to 14 games, their worst since 1935 when they were relegated. They have 30 points from 32 games, two behind West Ham United who are one place above the drop zone. Sunderland’s first Premier League win against Tottenham since 2010 left them in 10th with 46 points, two behind sixth-placed Chelsea who are in action later at home to Manchester City. If it had not already dawned on Tottenham fans that a first relegation since 1977 was looming large, West Ham’s thrashing of Wolverhampton Wanderers …

Mysterious island discovered in Antarctica’s ‘danger zone’ – as big as Giza pyramid | World | News

Mysterious island discovered in Antarctica’s ‘danger zone’ – as big as Giza pyramid | World | News

Explorers travelling through the Antarctic’s Weddell Sea have discovered a mysterious island. While traversing an area marked as a “danger zone”, the 93-strong crew of the Polarstern were forced to seek shelter after running into rough weather. Next to Joinville Island, they spotted a mysterious brown landmass, which turned out to be an untouched island. Simon Dreutter, a specialist in underwater mapping at Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), said: “On our route, the nautical chart showed an area with unexplored dangers to navigation, but it wasn’t clear what it was or where the information came from. I scoured all the coastlines we had here in the bathymetry lab and went back to the bridge. “We then changed course and headed in that direction, and it became increasingly clear that we had an island in front of us.” The Polartern team came within 150 metres of the island and, using a drone, they were able to explore it from above. They determined it to be 130 metres long, 50 metres wide, and protruding about 16 metres above …

Trump’s Iran ceasefire doesn’t mean Europe’s economy is out of the danger zone – POLITICO

Trump’s Iran ceasefire doesn’t mean Europe’s economy is out of the danger zone – POLITICO

But the damage done to the world’s supply chains, especially for energy, will simply not be undone overnight, even if — and it’s a big ‘if’ — the ceasefire holds, analysts say. “A temporary pause is just that — and both sides of the conflict have established a renewed reputation for unpredictability,” said Simon French, chief economist with London investment bank PanmureLiberum, via X. Moreover, said Peel Hunt chief economist Kallum Pickering, “Even if this truce marks the genuine end of fighting, some economic damage is already baked in.” He warned that whatever happens from here on, inflation will be higher and growth will be slower in the second half of this year, relative to what was expected in February, before the war started. While the two sides have agreed to start peace talks in Pakistan on Friday, both still seem far apart on key issues, notably the terms on which oil, gas and chemicals can pass in and out of the Persian Gulf, the most important shipping lane for world energy supply. The two …

The House | Sonia Kumar MP On Training Physiotherapists In A War Zone And Why She Quit The NHS

Sonia Kumar, Labour MP for Dudley (UK Parliament) 9 min read4 min Labour MP Sonia Kumar tells Sienna Rodgers about travelling to Ukraine with a team of British clinicians to train local therapists, helping injured soldiers recover faster Your phone is buzzing. It’s not a work message on WhatsApp, nor the latest surreal news story trending on X. It’s an air raid app telling you to take shelter in the nearest bunker – a telltale sign, these days, that you are presently in a war zone. Physiotherapist-turned-politician Sonia Kumar travelled to Ukraine in February. Going against Foreign Office advice, but briefed on safety and armed with burner phones provided by Parliament, she brought with her a group of hand-picked clinicians. They were all there to make a direct impact on the war by delivering practical healthcare training to Ukrainian clinicians. “The hospitality of Ukrainians was second to none. They made sure that we were looked after; that we knew where the security was. We all had the app on our phones,” …

A watered-down ‘buffer zone’ bill passes NYC Council

A watered-down ‘buffer zone’ bill passes NYC Council

(RNS) — The New York City Council passed a bill Thursday (March 26) calling for buffer zones around places of worship in an attempt to protect them from rowdy protesters. But the bill that passed with a solid majority, 44-5, with one abstention, was a watered-down version of what Council Speaker Julie Menin initially called for. The bill, which had been much discussed after a November protest was held outside a prominent Manhattan synagogue, directs the New York Police Department to present a plan to the mayor and the council within 45 days, explaining how the city will use “security perimeters” to help safeguard houses of worship. Menin, who is Jewish, had originally called for secure buffer zones of up to 100 feet outside of houses of worship. But Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch raised concerns that the bill would restrict the police’s ability to determine the size of the necessary buffer zones. Others raised free speech concerns and said a buffer zone law would only serve to intimidate those fighting for Palestinian human rights. The bill …

How Jake Dyson turned the Dyson Zone into OnTrac headphones

How Jake Dyson turned the Dyson Zone into OnTrac headphones

For starters, the headphones are said to optimise the listening experience with best-in-class noise cancellation, powered by a custom Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) algorithm that uses eight microphones to sample external sound 384,000 times a second. This, combined with premium materials and carefully designed internal geometry, helps cancel up to 40dB of unwanted noise. Its 40mm, 16-ohm neodymium speaker drivers, together with advanced audio signal processing, reproduce frequencies ranging from 6Hz to 21,000Hz, delivering deep sub-bass and clear highs. Meanwhile, the speaker housing is tilted 13 degrees towards the ear for a more direct audio response. Naturally, the housing for these advanced technologies ought to be made from high-quality materials. The outer caps, for instance, are machined from high-grade aluminium for a lightweight yet durable finish. Then there is the 55-hour battery life – about double the market average. If you are going to wear a device on your head for that long, it had better be comfortable. “We did a lot of work on the weight distribution – the comfort on the head and …
